Being from Fairfax, VA and having daughters about your age I know what you’re talking about and I’m so sorry for your experience. I also went to HS in NVA and your experience is not unusual, so much so that when I went to my 50th HS reunion nothing had changed. Although the people were much older (me too) their attitudes were still as exclusive as ever. You’re a beautiful, talented lady and I wish you the best “Joan.”

From my middle & high school experiences, most guidance counselors do the absolute bare minimum to actually provide "guidance" or support to the students. I was bullied throughout middle school especially and multiple GCs did nothing to stop it, let alone provide a supportive ear for kids to fall back on. I turned out fine, but I genuinely worry for today's and tomorrow's kids knowing what they may have to go through essentially on their own.

I can relate. We moved to a conservative New Hampshire in the late 70’s....and I definitely was waaay too creative for the environment. I never fit in, so I made my own space and became the first “punk/New Wave” kid in the town (we had moved from a much more progressive town close to DC so I knew about the scene happening in NYC etc). Good times

I went to high school in Fairfax Virginia too. I had the same experience. Guys weren’t allow to have long curly hair and wear combat boots. But really, I think this is the way with all high schools.

I’m confident that 90% of the bullying was because she was gorgeous. Cuz goth/punk kids were doing their thing in the 80’s/90’s and while a small town in middle America would definitely be super closed minded to alt scenes; I don’t think girls would beat up other girls (especially if they were afraid of them, which is normally the case w/ being goth in hs) or counselors would be picking on a student if there wasn’t some level of insecurity there.

This session is called, why can't goth girl get a break? One reason I can think of is, on good girls you are being used by producers and directors to seduce very undesirable bad character. I think that the behavior of your character, seducing a bad criminal, will not help your career very much. I realize that some really like it, but that audience is not very large. I feel you are being used in the wrong way. You are too beautiful and talented to be used in that way.
