Cameron Russell admits she won "a genetic lottery": she's tall, pretty and an underwear model. But don't judge her by her looks. In this fearless talk, she takes a wry look at the industry that had her looking highly seductive at barely 16-years-old.

hallelu lee But looks play a HUGE factor. You can probably talk to a pretty girl and get her number but it is VERY difficult, that is why you are better off working on looks, plus since when do you see an ugly man walk with a pretty woman? Unless they were already friends before.

Of course attractive people have some issues in life cos of their looks (i think especially females), but the advantages weigh out the disadvantages by far in my opinion. Everybody in the range from "really ugly" to "incredibly beautiful" has reasons to complain somehow, but i think almost everybody knows where he/she wants to place himself if he/she could choose his/her looks. No where even near average ;)

I think the title conveys the message well. When someone says that something "isn't everything", the implication is "although it's big, it's not everything". And she went on to say that society places too much importance on something that is actually very superficial. Moreover, good looks don't shield you from insecurities.

People like to think that if they were more beautiful, skinnier etc they would not be insecure, they would be happy and basically all their problems would go away. They get mad and jealous when beautiful people talk about being insecure. They probably feel like beautiful people don’t have the right to be insecure. But being insecure in reality has nothing to do with how you look. You can always find someone more beautiful than yourself. And like she says the more you focus on the way you look, regardless of how you actually look, the more insecure you are. Cause the more you focus on it the more flaws you find. The best way to learn how to be confident in your looks is to find a way to accept that you don’t look perfect and that you might not even be especially beautiful at all and try your best to not put your worth in your appearance. I’m not saying this is easy. But it is easier and better than changing your looks only to find that you still feel insecure.

Would life be easier for you because compared to a good looking person you're smarter than them? No ofc not. Because your ugly and looks matter too. Get my point. saniyauzumaki I didn't say she "didn't deserve it". I said being tall, white, with fair skin and a pretty face are not something a person "deserves" through having done anything to earn them. You either get lucky in the gene pool or you don't. It's not like you can go to college and learn how to be tall, slim and pretty like you can go there to earn a degree and get a career that way. Therefore it is not something that is "deserved" or not deserved it is mostly just luck of the draw. I came to this talk many times and reconsidered about the message that she wanted to transfer. It's true that being beautiful is the advantage that we could get to be treated better in life. However, it's just a factor and it's important that we should not be obsessed about how we look. Social standards of beauty affects the society at large, even with the people like models are still insecure about their appearance. I truly appreciate that she came up stage and discussed that images of models are the results of the entire beauty industry and the real person can be totally different than we've imagined.

Why are people still ignoring the point of this talk? She's literally admitting her privilege and pointing out both the biases and superficiality of the fashion industry (which can severely affect the body and beauty image of young girls everywhere) and the way people judge others based solely on physical appearance (RACE, gender, weight, hair color etc). The first part to fixing a problem is letting it be known. But if you ignore her message because you're actually just jealous she was lucky enough to be born physically attractive, you're LITERALLY contributing to the problem. This is an important message.

TheAlphadog I understand your points, it really all boils down to personal opinion and how the individual perceives these issues. The most significant part for me, though, is concerning young girls. I do disagree with you on that, only because girls in these newer generations (due to the accessibility of social media and the presence of advertisements everywhere) are almost always surrounded by what society considers the ideal body type/beauty. Usually the ideal is portrayed as a beautiful woman with lovely skin and a fit body, perfect hair teeth and nails, etc. If the girl doesn't have a strong enough body image of herself (you know, the low self esteem middle school years are super common) nor is she taught to realize that the people presented to her in ads/social media aren't necessarily 'attainable' (not sure how to word this part my apologies) she might become desperate to achieve these ideals and do something dangerous like starve herself or even become depressed. It's the same for boys too, I'm sure many have gone through periods of low self esteem and depression due to not being 'ideal' (ofc I don't know for sure, I wouldn't know what it's like to grow up as a boy in this age). Mostly I just support the fashion industry introducing images of health rather than unattainable beauty, ethnic diversity for poc representation (a young latina girl may not feel beautiful if the only beautiful women she knows about are all white, for example) that sort of thing. Education in general needs a lot of work, but we can't forget that children retain a lot of information from social media/advertising. It's like another educational outlet, so we gotta make sure they're not contributing anything potentially harmful. xx

Usually the ideal is portrayed as a beautiful woman with lovely skin and a fit body, perfect hair teeth and nails, etc." You're wrong. Society doesn't "tell" people what is beautiful, that's just ridiculous. Have you ever had a friend who thought someone was super attractive, but you didn't find them that way yourself? Attraction has everything to do with biology and you perception of healthy. All those things you listed are signals of a healthy person that our subconscious picks up on so we can attempt to reproduce with them. Has nothing to do with the media. I agree with you on body image though, but seeing as how the average weight has started to go up and obesity has increased, heart diseases also. There should be a limit to what we actually tell young girls and boys. There are more benefits for a person to being fit, eating healthy and exercising than there is to eat bad foods and being told to love yourself anyway. That is completely backwards. Everything else though I completely agree, but unfortunately, you live in a free market society. So magazines can publish what they want depending on the demand.
@KanitahKay
@KanitahKay 9 жыл бұрын
TheAlphadog It's not blatant, I just personally believe having a majority unattainable image is subtle enough to cause harm to any young person who may not know better. A shift towards healthy bodies is definitely the move. If ads only include vv beautiful and the vv skinny, kids won't know that not everybody can obtain that body healthily. But you're right, it depends on demand. Money over all :(

@@elastronaute1198 We get that... I'm pretty sure 99% of people know what her main points were ahead of time. The irony is you don't get to say, "Trust me, because I am [insert topic]" because the people who don't benefit from that know what it's like to be on the other side of the fence and can see the privilege received. A great example is in dating. A young beautiful female or male has a significant advantage of finding a partner, especially male, if they are scaled 8+. That's because 80% of the women tend to be attracted to 20% of the men. So the other 80% of the men are having to fight tooth and nail for female attention, while the 20% look down and say, "ayy don't worry, it's not all that great". The issue is people say and want to do something positive, but on the other hand their actions say otherwise.

She said that, and with the point being that looks rule a lot of things that it shouldn't be able to. Looks are not what there is to a person, yet society is built to value looks above all else. That's the real point. You can look good and receive benefits but be miserable at the same time for entirely different reasons, or you can look a certain "bad" way and life will treat you poorly despite your personality having nothing to do with how society judges you. The key thing is, that it's always harder to speak up when you are in the segment that in the majority's eyes is benefitting from what you are talking about. A millionaire says money isn't everything? Nobody cares. A model saying looks aren't everything? People rarely care. I think she struck a good balance between highlighting the ups and downs not just for her, but for everyone, which is difficult when coming from a position where people are less likely to value your words.

I find it amazing how so many people can watch the same thing and get two completely different messages out of it. She clearly stated that what we see on the magazine covers/pages, isn't her. It's a "Construction" of her. How much clearer can she be. That one sentence speaks volumes. Maybe if she pointed out how short term a model's career is or how her looks will fade with time and gravity, some of you wouldn't be so negative. Society pays far to much attention on the packaging instead of the contents. You can be beautiful on the outside but when gravity and age have taken their toll, all you are left with is who you truly are. And that can only be found on the inside. That is what we need to pay attention too. And I don't know about any of you, but I would much rather be beautiful on the inside because that's the person you live with 24 hours a day. And no amount of money would be worth a temporary superficial beauty and a hateful and miserable soul that you have to live with your entire life. And there are many people in this world that fit that description. They have my sympathy. Simply my humble opinion.

Wonderful words of inspiration right there...I once wanted to be a model when I was 16 and now? Whats changed? I have learnt to be my own model, my own image, a self that the world would look at and say God bless you, I use my beauty meticulously using it to attract men and women so that they could see my words of wisdom, with every perfect picture I upload, I attach a life inspiring quote to it, so when people see me, all they would want to do is believe in themselves and be inspired. Am glad I did not become 'the' model because I could have lost myself to this self 'constructed' look. Plus I also think models should be appreciated more, since theh give away themselves to show off the art of others that are passionate of their work be it hair, clothes, makeup, campaign or shoes. I'm sure she's got some great stories! tom, I think Su is talking about most normal circumstances. The richest and most admired people in the world will always be loved regardless of their looks because they are self-made people, they either had a privileged upbringing, terrific luck or sheer tenacity that paid off in the end. However, for every millionaire and every visionary there are thousands who are not so fortunate that have to constantly struggle against a system that discriminates based upon looks every single day.

that only happens in high school. after that, beauty from the inside counts big time. yes pretty face could give u advantage, but that doesnt always last for a long time. being pretty dont always take u anywhere in life. i've met some pretty girls without character, they are only famous on the social media, and that wont always make u happy or success whatsoever. be pretty inside and outside (being pretty on the outside dont always mean pretty face. u could have average beauty but as long as u clean urself up, u're good to go), have character. thats what matters after u grow up. and what job are u talking about? entertainment, sales and model industry? yes, that kind of job requires u being pretty. but a lot of job prefer brain and skill than pretty face too.

Therefore you think that something is important as long as you don't have it, but when you get it, you realize that it's not. I have gotten pretty much everything that I have wanted (materially) and none of it matters. It's empty stuff. It doesn't make you happy and therefore it's not really important.

There are a lot of comments on here about how she is a hypocrite for being beautiful/rich/fill-in-the-blank and saying that all of that stuff isn't important. You are all missing the point. She is saying that it IS important, but that it SHOULDN'T BE. She is being so brave and vulnerable by standing up on stage and admitting that the world she benefits from is the same world others get hurt by. You can't criticize a model for being blind to her privileges and then criticize her for seeing and standing up against those same privileges. She can't change the way she looks and how the world favors her, so I commend her for doing SOMETHING to combat this issue.

looks are like a first door to a person. if you’re beautiful then that door is opened and people will go to the second door which is personality, who you really are, etc. if you’re not attractive then the first door remains closed and people won’t even bother trying to get to know you. Beautiful people say looks don’t matter simply because it’s something they don’t struggle with (so eventually personality will become their main focus) You can be unhappy for various reasons, but it’s unfair to say something doesn’t matter because /you/ don’t struggle with it. Ideally we all should focus on what’s inside but the vast majority of people will never bother that much if they’re not impressed after a first, superficial glance towards someone.

The problem is when you cannot go to the second door because you're Latino or dark-skinned... Those are things we must work on to change in modern societies. Less worse that how do you look physically is not the only component of the first door, but also, how are you dressed, how do you talk, how do you behave and even your body expressions.
