We need to do more of this instead of purchasing poorly made particle board furniture. unfortunately ‘dovetail is not “it all”. These were separated, unaligned, & had gone beyond in my view of them (”...fairly ok made peace....”). Shelves in lower ‘doored section’ were hung cheaply. Draw bottoms lesser material used, poor external hinges on doors, etc. Esp for the time frame manufactured).

Also, she is painting the piece while it is sitting on a carpeted floor, and there is no paint on the carpet, pretty amazing! I would have needed to put the plastic sheeting down first that can be rolled up and tossed when the project is done or used a reuseable tarp, or cardboard underneath, I'm sure a bit of paint would have dripped on the floor if I was painting this piece.

@@CookieZ3353 I don’t recall that she asked for any “constructive criticism”, and just for the record, the actual meaning of the phrase constructive criticism is examining the idea or statement or behaviour in a well-reasoned manner, by offering specific and actionable feedback, which will help them achieve their outcome. Key words there are THEIR OUTCOME. Not YOUR outcome, their outcome. As opposed to simply being judgemental & critical, which means that you are taking a view on something based on your personal value systems, I.e., you don’t care for the style!

I actually do antique furniture restoration. That's how I support my family. I see some of the people commenting here because she painted this. There is nothing to restore here. This isn't a valuable item. Its not rare. Its crappy wood. The "wood grain" within the finish is actually WITHIN the finish. Its not even actual wood grain. I agree with what you did there. Some pieces NEED paint or they're just always going to be ugly. This is a fantastic and trendy way to recycle these otherwise unwanted pieces.

Hinges. Take the hinge off. Fill the holes with a wood filler before it dries, stick a straight pin in the center, and leave it. When you are done painting, pull out the straight pin and you now have marked holes to reset your hinges. Works on house doors really well or anything that i want perfectly realigned when i reassemble it.

Anything that saves a piece from the dump, I'm all for!!.. and that's from someone who spent 27 years in the actual antique restoration business, don't listen to fools who think every piece of old furniture is an antique worth a bunch of money, it's just not the case, those who complain never spend money on the antiques anyway, their homes are usually full of Ikea and Bobs discount furniture stuff..lol

@jenniferlynn3537
@jenniferlynn3537 8 ай бұрын
@@thehungrygoldfish Well, there are antiques, and then there are ANTIQUES. Just because something is old - even over 100 years old - doesn’t mean it qualifies for historic preservation. Pine furniture in particular (with oak and close 2nd) - and ESPECIALLY anything in the mid-century colonial revival style - has no real historic value (or, I’d argue, inherent beauty…). Homes were positively SWIMMING in colonial furniture for decades - there’s no lack of it - and even when solid wood and well-built, it was often mass-produced. When we’re assessing something made of a rarer wood such as chestnut or walnut (both of which are quite costly to purchase even as planks today) - that’s a different story. Painting over those woods - and certain types of mahogany pieces - is what raises issues. People actually ruin valuable pieces because they can’t tell the difference. I have a hunch, though, that the so-called “wood purists” often can’t tell the difference between quality and run-of-the mill (pun intended) - they just think anything old is special and precious. Notwithstanding that, “Screw the purists” and “Paint all the antique furniture” is a pretty reckless statement. I sometimes watch videos where the opposite is taking place: paint is being stripped off a valuable antique, and people are lambasting whichever idiot painted it in the first place. I’ve pointed out that the only reason the piece survives is BECAUSE it was painted - in other words, the family who owned the piece decades ago opted to keep and paint it because they couldn’t afford to buy something new. Had they been richer, off to the charity sale it would have gone - where it would likely have been bought and painted to get it to match better. The point of all this is to make the most out of furniture - to increase its value and utility. Suggesting that people slap paint on anything they fancy comes across as ignorant. Better to educate yourself on what you’re working with - as was shown here - so you don’t make a costly mistake.

I have four hutches and I left them with the original finish and put plate glass on the base top so it could be used as a cutting board and to protect the wood. They have darkened over the past 25 years but I'm happy with it. The hutches give my kitchen a good amount of drawers and work space. I have a very similar one, except mine is a corner bookshelf hutch where I keep my collection of cookbooks. It's also early American maple, same look. I think mine was meant to be a desk, as it only has one shallow drawer. I never thought about painting it! Now I'm imagining a whole new look for that thing. I'm happy to learn about the Beyond Paint product. It's about time to repaint my antique iron bed. It belonged to my grandparents, and they got it second hand sometime around 1900. I painted it white with antique gold accents when I was a teenager, and now I'm 62. I'm thinking of changing it to a bolder color, or black with faux verdigris for the fancy swirly decorative parts. I love how this turned out! Hard to believe it's the same hutch!

I turns out really nice. You see what you can do with a bit of imagination. When we got married in 1981 and bought our house, its big kitchen needed something big in it, and we wanted a welsh dresser. Unfortunately, there were none around so we found this junk shop locally which put the shelf part onto the base parts in matching wood. We chose a base part and the guy used recycled wood from the stairway of an old school and put shelves on top. It was greatly admired by all visitors. My friend admired it so much that when we remodelled our kitchen, going from dark wood to bright white and pale wood, we gave it to her, along with the table we were gifted when we moved into the house. She still has it to this day. That must have been around about 2008. It was a good item and certainly is still giving value for money.
