I was never taught about money and I think it is very important to learn at a young age. I feel it’s connected to your self-esteem. If you feel good about yourself you don’t have to spend a lot of money to impress others. If you don’t feel good about yourself you’re always spending money. Anyway that was how I felt. I married a CPA and he taught me about money management. I am grateful . I will give you a piece of advice from someone who’s over 60 that if you don’t have money when you’re older it makes your life a lot harder. You need to save for those days that you’re not going to be doing well in your Health.🇺🇸😊

i think ive got a few bad habits: - fear of missing out (game purchases and fandom merch) - sales (mostly clothes) - "i'm hungry/thirsty and tired so im just going to buy something from a restaurant instead of homecooking"
@ginac41532 жыл бұрын
Fantastic video as always Christina. you've inspired me so much, as a fellow spender who had a weak spot for clothing and shoes. who has turned things around 180! To address my online shopping habit, I've increased hobbies like hiking and gym classes instead of browsing online for clothing or on the Gram. In 2022 I listen to personal finance podcasts for inspiration, rather than watching the KZbin haul videos that I watched in 2021. My personal finances have had a complete makeover!

So inspiring!

I think my bad habit is "being an ostrich" - keeping my head in the sand and being unaware of what I'm spending. My husband and I make decent incomes, and he handles our finances, so I kind of just assumed things were fine and went about living life (so a little YOLOing too I suppose). I didn't feel like I was making extravagant purchases, but lots of medium and little ones do add up... actually that's even a lie. We did have several big purchases associated with fixing up a home we purchased last year. So anyway, once I realized we were on a downward spiral of credit card debt, I took the time to comb through every purchase over the past few months and was embarrassed at the amount of money we spent on such pointless things. So for me, just the simple act of knowing where the money goes has helped us take some big corrective steps.
@TheEmzies2 жыл бұрын
It's really important for both partners to be involved in the finances. One of the things I've learned is how many women leave money management to their partner and then are left in the lurch when things go bad.
@marissacal292 жыл бұрын
@@TheEmzies totally agree. I almost edited my post to say something along those lines. While I've always known where we stood in terms of income and recurring/monthly bills, it was the more discretionary income and actually balancing the books every month where I became complacent. Definitely important to have a clear picture of it all. Thanks for raising this point!

Girl, I'm on the same boat. Even though I have been saving for some time now, I didn't realize my shopping was out of control. I could have been saving even more! What helped it snap into reality for me is adding up all my shopping expenses of the year so far. So January to July of 2022. When I tell you, I was shooketh to my core when I saw the total 🥴 I added all my poshmark, in-store, and online shopping receipts. Atleast, all the ones I could get my hands on and find. My next step is to stop impulse spending, and have a $500 yearly shopping budget. I'll write down all my purchases to make sure I don't overexceed that number. Along with making sure my purchases are thought out well.

Honestly, for me it wasnt until i got a professional diagnosis of my adhd that i was able to really start changing. Shopping addiction is real, but for me it wasn't addictive spending. I had all of the elements amd knowledge in place and would buy impulsively/hyper-fixate. It isn't an excuse, no creditor g.a.f nor will you get any breaks. If you've done all the work (cutting out social media, financial literacy, mental health work to not emotionally spend or fomo, goal setting, etc) and you're still having issues with spending and don't know why, seak professional, psychologist, help because there might be something deeper that no amount of self-help or gurus can help with (you'll be spending money on trying to not spend money)
@sim7712 жыл бұрын
Essentially, if i manage my symptoms, ai manage my shopping. But ubtil you get to that point where everything else is managed and only your symptoms are left, then it won't be the full solution

One thing that gets me into trouble EVERY TIME is watching stylish influencers. Once I see them in a gorgeous outfit I hit pause and go to search for the items. I do have an amazing wardrobe and I have plenty to wear - no need for any more especially considering that I have no savings. I can't tell you how many times I go through the spend-guilt cycle. Perhaps I need to ban myself from watching the videos.
@Christinamychas2 жыл бұрын
I still struggle with this often too. I often unfollow for a bit as needed, but another thing I do encourage you to try is removing the guilt from the equation! Is there a way you can set yourself up so you can spend some of that money (mindfully!) on the things you’re interested in guilt free? Automating my savings etc has helped that aspect a lot for example!
@tataandre89072 жыл бұрын
same here :((( actually meditation somewhat helps me to be a little bit more conscious and when i scroll smth and find myself brousing that exact shirt on the website i get out of the trance and close the page))
@jenquarry71692 жыл бұрын
I recommend also watching Alyssa Beltempo - especially if you actually love your current wardrobe. She talks all about wearing the clothes that you have and using what you to create your own version of the outfits that you see. It might help you think about that inspiration a little differently. Instead of thinking “I need to go buy those exact items” it’s “let’s dig into my closet to recreate that outfit using items already in my closet”.
@neitilusikka42262 жыл бұрын
I have noticed that watching influencers who buy constantly really triggers me. I never look up what they wear (I can't afford to buy 1000$ dresses). What I do is to "onlineshop" (in a cheaper platforms similar items), I put items in my basket and leave them in there. If I really want/like something I re-visit the page after a week (if I even remember it anymore) and then I might buy it. I never use creditcard to buy clothes etc. I have to have that money in my account. I have automtised my savings, when I get my paychek the same day all my savings/investments and monthly budget will be transferred to my usable accounts. With this system I have been able to save quite significant amount of money (from a low-ish income).
@amyface232 жыл бұрын
I lived the YOLO life for way too long, just thinking I would eventually make enough to pay it all down within like 6 months… I’m still early on my debt-pay down journey, but feeling a change in my habits and how I think about money has definitely helped me feel more confident in being able to achieve a debt-free life!

Thank you for this, I am trying to get credit card debt under control and be a better example to my teenager who just got a job. I realized a few months ago I had way too many Amazon subscribe and save things going on, many of which were not timed well at all-ended up with like five big bottles of shampoo that arrived within three of each other and some products weren’t even getting used at all. So I made a lot of adjustments and canceled some. My other issues is “but it’s only $20, it’s only $50 such a great deal, it’s only $10/month, it’s only…” You get the idea. Just being more self aware is half the battle for me and I am definitely going to start using more cash for things.

finally watching this now, Some things that have been bad habits for me is eating out ( especially on the weekend with the kids) going to coffee shops just because I want coffee. Buying groceries but then forgetting things and spending way more than I thought. buy new food and not using the food from home. buying things because I want it and not really accessing my budget. Im in the middle of doing a complete budget change because things arent working lol

Great video! A lot of people don’t seem to come the same realizations as you have. Personally I love a good sale, and shopping in general. I’m on a no spend for certain categories, but for everything else a dedicated spending fund helps. It limits how much I spend, and I have less guilt because the money is already spoken for ✨

I would love to see a video on how you navigate finances with Jeff, as there are many line items that can overlap in your budget esp when you live together (eg. rent, groceries, housewares/decor). Do you split 50/50, by a percentage relative to income? Would your system change if you got married (eg. fully combining your money/accounts)? As a newlywed currently navigating this topic, I would love to hear your thoughts on it!!
@neitilusikka42262 жыл бұрын
With my partner we pay procentage amounts of the bills, hence he earns way more than I. This has worked for us, because we both agreed that it wouln't be fair to pay 50/50 when another one earns a lot more in a month. We find it important that both of us are able to save for our future and have stable finances.
@inderjitkainth53532 жыл бұрын
I’m lucky that I live at my parents (Indian daughters usually stay at their parents house till they are married or find a job out of the city I still pay my own bills and help out with food cooking and cleaning etc) so because I live at my parents I just put what I would be paying on rent into my tfsa (because Tfsa money is still accessible) I’ve been doing this for the past 7 month and have saved up 8500 I’m gonna try maxing out my tfsa because I think that’ll help me retire with a million. I also have a really good pension program at work and will likely hit my magic 80 by 60.

I’m 63 year old married woman. We don’t have a lot of money. We did a few months ago. My mother in law left my husband her house. He passed away at the end of last year. The house we didn’t want it’s in a different state. So he sold it by auction. I know we still have money. Just not how much. We have to have money to pay to get a well dug. Once that’s done we my decide to move. We’ve lived in our house two years with a water tank we have get filled up. And it isn’t cheap. So if we could get someone to come drill a well for us it would make our lives so much easier. But I have always been a buyer. I think it stem from me being poor as a child. And now we have money and I spend too much of it shopping. But I’m going to go through my closet. I don’t think I’ll have a capsule wardrobe. But something close to it.
@jesslopez8182 жыл бұрын
God bless you, alot of people struggle with that and you made a point where you said it stems from having less as a child. I totally understand you and it's not easy, sometimes anxiety get in the way too and sometimes just the thrill of having something new. But I want to tell you that prayer works and asking God for help also works. I pray this helps you and I'm so sorry about your husband, it's not easy losing someone. Many blessings to you and I pray you overcome in Jesus mighty name.

I never had such habits. I have a completely deeply different relationship with money and stuff. I don't say that I have a better one. Just very different. The root is surely my immigrational background from the former USSR. I never ever in my life equated money/stuff with success. Having it was never a sign that someone made it. In my professional life I was going for "interesting" and not for "it will give me gainful employment". And somehow I always had enough money. I find interesting in your channel the attempt of conscious, truthful and deliberate living. I think that is something that always leads to success.

this is a trap of social media to keep us broke)) fashion influencers know which buttons to press on us - shopping addicts. i can't refuse to ban social media for the sake of my wallet but before searching hashtags with my fave brands e.g. I agree to myself to watch for inspiration and I literally talk to myself that god, there are so many talents in the world producing amazing clothing, but you can't have them all, it;s useless, let's just admire quietly))

Important points. I had my father, George who told me not to buy anything I didn’t have money for or couldn’t afford. I always had a decent vehicle, but not over the top. I like to travel, and love clothing and shopping, but I am sensible. I retired debt free. Own my own house and put an extension on with inheritance money. No debt. I am in pretty decent shape in my retirement. But we are always on the line, are we not? . I budget and am careful. I pay into my income tax fund so I don’t get a surprise in April. I resist all the pleas for monthly charitable programs. I donate well over the average to charity and maximize my income tax deductions. I am wary of catfishers, as I could be a prime target. Any man that would ask me for money ……..history. Would you like to invest in…….history. I have pared down my wardrobe, as I am no longer working and have some mad money for lunches with friends. I list my upcoming expenses…..fall car and house insurance, wood for the stove, spring is property and income tax…and am prepared to pay them on time. I have never had big debt. I went back to school on a divorce settlement in the 90s and worked while I did my NP part time. I am glad I had parents who were good with their money. They didn’t have a lot but nor did they owe a lot. Glad you have sorted out your debt issues and can still enjoy a little splurge once in a while! I Hope by posting this, I am not inundated with trolls and creepers! Haha!
