It would satisfy Tom's interest in horror films with a cult following and Shaun's interest in Oscar Calibur films because both Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.

The burning car sequence never ceases to impress me. The stunt man had to wear the full burn suit _and_ use his own oxygen tank because the flames consumed all the air inside the vehicle.

in fact,no. the prop guys sprayed a flammable substance on this car. Later (after the filming),a certain Martin Sanchez bought one of the stunt cars,and reused all the body panels of the burnt christine,they were in perfect condition

@@laurentdudouit2485 in fact, you’re both right. OP about the inside and you about the outside. In the DVD commentary he talks about how difficult it was to drive the car in those circumstances. Remember the windows were blacked out and it was shot at night on top of all that.

My favorite part of this movie, was not the car, but the complex and evolving relationship between the main character and his best friend that turns demented by the car, their interactions are really good personal drama in an otherwise horror action movie.

I read the book when I 8 or so and that's what stuck with me - the friendship. I got to the final words "RIP, Arnie. I love you, man." and started SOBBING.

This video sums up why I like these guys' reactions so much. They go into each film giving it a fair chance and accept it on its own terms. They surely knew going into this they weren't going to get a masterpiece of a killer car movie; yet they didn't make fun of everything, they credited the film where it deserved it, talked about their reservations, and tried to rate it as fairly as possible.

His early novels like this and Carrie really do well showing you how High School was. Steven King wrote about HS so well because he was a HS teacher when he wrote Carrie. He was actually my Dad's English teacher.

More than 20 Plymouths were used to film the movie. Belvederes, Savoys and Fury models were used during the filming process. All were painted red and given matching interiors.

In 1983 they were probably just considered "old cars" but today they are genuine classics and the only thing I dislike about this movie (my favourite Stephen King movie) is the amount of gorgeous cars that got wrecked.

Yes. That's true in a number of movies, but this one was somewhat excessive. My first car was a 1958 Dodge Coronet. Vaguely like the corresponding Plymouth models, but not identical. All great cars.

@@DougRayPhillips I know nothing of American cars, other than the fact they were beautiful up until around the 80's, but I do know two models of classic Plymouth. The Baracuda, named after a big American fish and the Hemicuda, which I believe was a Baracuda but it had 8 of something, 8 cylinders or something - hence the 'hemi' prefixed to cuda. I have no idea where this trivia stems from but I'm glad I get to use it today 😆

@@krashd Yes, old cars were beautiful. Pretty much any American high-performance car, prior to the 1973 oil embargo, was 8 cylinders. "Hemi" was short for "hemispherical combustion chamber." A special engine design for extra performance. In the 2004 movie "Highwaymen" (not to be confused with other movies of the same name), character Rennie Cray (Jim Caviezel) drives a 1968 Barracuda Super Stock Hemi, and uses it to chase down the psycho killer who murdered Cray's wife and other women and who likes to run people over with his 1972 Cadillac Eldorado. I read this book when I was in middle school. You're absolutely right about the story. It's much too challenging to convey this story in a 90min movie. This was the second novel I read by Stephen King when I was a kid. My first was Salem's Lot when I was 10. I was too young to appreciate that novel in it's entirety back then but it scared me so thoroughly that I slept with the lights on all summer and never opened my shades at night.

I love this movie. They recored the scene where Christine repairs itself was filmed backwards. Watch Into The Mouth of Madness. John did a great job with this one too. Mouth isn’t Stephen King but it feels like one.

One of my favorite Stephen King book adaptations. I believe Carpenter effectively created a tense atmosphere of Terror when Christine was on her Rampages. The visual of that flaming car backing out of the garage and chasing buddy down is iconic.

I like these kinds of videos so that I can watch a "first timer" and I can get my memories of the movie to awaken again without having to literally buy it. Netflix used to have all these older great movies to watch, but they've tossed them away to promote their own stuff. Some of it is pretty ok - but that's not why originally subscribed. Hulu is getting better, but it's still just their own content they are pushing. Where the hell can you just turn on and watch Duel, or The Keep, or The Fog anymore? I feel like I live vicariously through these 'reaction' videos that you even have to be a Patreon contributor to fully appreciate (which I will never be). Well, that was a rant. I've always loved this movie. My friends and I loved the scene where Arnie tells Mr.Darnell that "he'd think about the offer" and Mr Darnell says " don't think about it too long or I'll throw you out on your f-en ass" we still say that line all the time. For John Carpenter recommendations, I'd say They Live and Starman. They Live has grown a cult following over the years (well deserved!) and Starman is probably one of his most under-appreciated movies. Great performance by Jeff Bridges.

From what I remember it follows the book relatively close, it feels like the same story. It is a quite thick book though, so the movie still glosses over stuff, including what makes Christine live. About the red car among all the white ones: Christine is a 1958 plymouth fury, and that year they only came in white, but the owner put in some kind of special order for a red one.

@@santiagohardy2728 Basically, it's haunted by the original owner, LeBay. You could say that he loved the car so much he "sacrificed" his wife and daughter to it to give it life. So while it's haunted by a ghost sometimes, it's also has a mind of its own because the deaths and love for the car

Background on Christine's unusual color: Her first owner, Roland LeBay was said to have been a very rich, powerful, and cruel man. As Darnell put it in a remark in the movie "You could've poured boiling water down his throat and he would've ****ed icecubes". All other Furys of that year were that beige color. Christine was a custom ordered vehicle by Roland.

My buddy and I basically grew up with this movie. I'd spend the weekend sleeping over at his house when we were kids and we'd watch the Vhs of Christine. I've seen this more times than I can count. It's a really goofy premise, but I love watching Arnie's descent into madness. Very good acting.

One of the more underrated and unappreciated of the film adaptations of King's work. John Carpenter is a the top of his game here, and no one else could have played Arnie Cunningham better then Keith Gordon.

If you want more Stephen King, especially obscure, you can’t lose with the TV movie “Salem’s Lot”. It was directed in the 1970s by the guy who did “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and is surprisingly effective.

YES. Still can't watch it without getting creeped out, and James Mason is always worth watching. But you want the 1979 3hr20min mini-series, not the movie version, and not the remake or the sequel. Based on King's second best-seller which is still one of his better novels.

It's one of them rare films that I think is actually better than the book because having the car be "alive" itself, and not simply possessed by an entity is scarier to me. Definitely one of my favourite Carpenter films of all time not far behind from Halloween.

It's not as clear in the movie but it's heavily implied in the novel that Arnie gets possessed by Roland Lebay's spirit, the previous owner of Christine. That's why he starts using phrases that his brother did, his attire changes and Arnie's personality completely vanishes.

They used between 18-22 cars to play Christine. Most of them were used for parts because it was such a rare car. The car was a 1958 Plymouth. Specifically, Christine is supposed to be a 1958 Plymouth Fury, but those only came in Buckskin Beige with gold trim. The movie used all manor of 1958 and 1957 Plymouths to play the part, Savoy's, Plaza's, though most were Belvedere's, since the side trim was the main difference between them. The opening scene is set to imply she was a special order car, where the customer paid extra for custom options. Of the cars used in the movie, only 2 are known to survive. John Carpenter himself kept one of the hero cars, and a fan actually managed to save one of the stunt cars and restore it (oddly enough, the only stunt car to have a manual transmission.)

I only just saw this movie for the first time in 2020 and two things about it immediately stood out to me. The first thing was how GOOD it looked. It might be simple but the cinematography & lighting was really well done, and served as a good reminder to me about why it's still important to shoot movies on film. The second thing I noticed was some of the dialogue. I haven't seen everything, but this is one of the earliest movies I've seen that has teenagers talking like they really do; like small adults.

One of my all time favorites. I live in Wichita,Kansas. Their a guy here who owns one of the cars from the movie. It’s the one on the assembly line in the beginning. He said the door lock knobs that Lee was trying to pull up to unlock the door when she was choking were added to the cars. The doors actually lock by pushing the floor handle down. The car is a 58 Plymouth Fury. I have a 59 Plymouth Savoy, the business version of the Fury. The filmmakers scoured the country and got all the Fury vehicles they could find. Then they got Belvederes and Savoys (which are similar vehicles built on the Fury platform) and painted them to look like the Fury. There are only a very few 58 Furies left. The story is based on a 55 Dodge police car that was in the northeast part of the U.S. Multiple policemen who used the car committed suicide. The doors would fly open when driving down the road. The car was deemed cursed. It was later owned by a lady who was a witch. It was cut up and taken to different junkyards. I seem to remember that someone purchased all the pieces and restored it.

As requested - my recommendations would be: For next John Carpenter film: The Fog (1980). For next Stephen King: Salem's Lot (1979 - Tobe Hooper, director of the Texas Chain Saw Massacre).

This is one of my favorite John Carpenter films, top 3 actually. There actually was a deleted subplot that had Dennis and Leigh begin to fall for each other and Arnie finding out about it. I think it was cut to keep the film focused on Arnie and Christine, and rightfully so.

I have always loved the music and score for this movie, it is so 80s horror, Pet Semetary and Silver Bullet also has some cool 80 horror music (both Stephen King movies) The fat bully is always the first killed

The Fog was great. Escape from New York is terrific as well. Just remember they were made in the early 80s so they’re ‘slow burns’ but Carpenter is excellent at creating mood, and his mood is beloved by us GenXers.

Great review, I had to laugh watching you freak out as Christine got more and more murderous. You remind me of when it was fun to watch movies! Lots of insights, and I think your notion of the attack on Christine as a reversal of "Greased Lightning" is spot on. For a different type of 'road thriller' I'd love to see you do "Duel", Steven Spielberg's first movie from the early '70s, where a salesman is driving along in the desert and gets into trouble with a terrifying, rusty fuel truck. It's so 'American' that I think you'd find a lot to comment about. Also if you search KZbin for "Duel truck" that thing has a lot of fans, all these years later!

Yes, I've heard the reason there's SO much strong language in the movie, is that they were afraid of only getting a PG-13 for the violence, so they added the language to get an R.

This has always been one of my top 3 favorite Stephen King adaptions and a movie I've seen more times than any of his other films. I even own the 1:18 die cast car with the working headlights. :D
