David Paich was lead vocalist on "Africa", NOT Bobby Kimball. When the only instrument you have is your voice and your voice is completely gone, give it up and call it a day. He barely "sings" eat all. He just turns the mic over to a drunk audience who sounds as bad as he does. That's embarrassing, and I loved the Bobby Kimball era of Toto, but he's completely tone deaf now, and nobody in his act can even remotely compare to the gifted musicians, Lukather, the Porcaro brothers, patch, Castro, David Hungate. IF you can't sing and your band can't play, just live off your royalties.

As a singer myself, that section in Africa is very challenging for a lot of vocalists. The lyrics make it especially challenging. And to sit up there on all those A4 notes is no joke.

I worked with Bobby in Louisiana back in the early 70's. I remember 'The Texas Pelican Club' with its circular bandstand. It was mounted on a motorized track of some kind and it took a half turn every hour. There was a wall across the middle, and the other band would be playing as the whole thing rotated. We played a lot of Chicago/Blood Sweat and Tears. I think it paid $75, but I needed the money. Bobby was a fine vocalist and had great range, and he was fun to work with. I appreciated that. When I heard later that he had 'made it,' I was happy for him.

The 2007 Paris live show was kinda the last hurrah for Bobby Kimball with TOTO. They are getting older. It’s nothing to be ashamed of because this guy was one of rocks best vocalist. Like Geddy Lee of Rush being able to hit those high notes don’t come as easy when you’re in your late 60s early 70s and have been touring for 40 + years.

Remember that vocal chords are muscles that degrade over time. Still, his latest studio work is pretty good stuff. Remember that this is an immensely talented musician who is now over 70, and has the energy of a man half his age. You can't expect him to sound like he did 40 years ago. As long as there are musicians willing to play with him, and audiences willing to hear him, let him keep performing. Good for him. Even someone like Phil Collins, as crippled as he is, and as worn as his vocal chords are, still keeps doing 2-hour shows from a chair. Why not?

age is one thing, but cocaine and smoking ruins your voice. lots of singers have found out the hard way. one i'm partial to is jay kay from jamiroquai -- sang like a bird as a younger man, quite hoarse and raspy these days with diminished range and power. but they both sound alright all things considered. survivors.

Bobby Kimball is also the only Member of Toto too who aged the best. The Others didn't age well. Steve Lukather needs to stop dying his hair black and just let his hair go grey. He is too old to have black hair. David Paich needs to lose weight. He looks way too heavy now.

When he started to do Africa, his singing was more shouting/screaming than using diaphragmatic support or proper technique. If he has sung this way all his life, I don't wonder anymore why he lost his voice pretty early in his career. Not only drugs and alcohol do that, his technique is insufficient, very high larynx and vocal folds in huge stress as he passes so much exhale breath through them via a shouting force. No wonder why he sips water every time he got a chance, gets his voice cracked easily, makes the audience sing the harder parts and he has to rely on autotune to give representable output. He sure got singing tone, though, but his technique isn't good at all. Or it isn't adjusted or trained considering his age or trained well at all. Just pure technique training, vocal rest, healthy habits, getting rid of bad habits caused by bad technique etc. I'm not sure is he hearing so well anymore, but if not, then singing without hearing yourself is very problematic. But he could save his voice and make his career go up a little, if he'd take the time, go to a singing coach like Ken Tamplin and do what he says. He'd probably sound much better after that. And this comment comes from a singer, who has watched many of this guys performances and I think the stuff I mentioned before are causing his exit from Toto and getting his career boosted.
@mojorisen74
@mojorisen74 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct! You couldn't have said it better. When he started singing Africa I couldn't believe he actually sang that loud! There's no reason to sing that way unless he was showing off.
@Anonyomus
@Anonyomus 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it didn't sound like belting, either. It was shouting in higher register than normal. That's one reason why he sips water like crazy, when he's performing live. His vocal folds get stressed and dry due to excessive bursts of exhale from the lungs. There's no support, just lungs doing the work. That's one thing that limits range for sure.

He probably is, but he should use mixed or head voice. The breathy chest voice he does here, letting lots of air and volume blast out of lungs wears out vocal folds very fast. You can see him sipping water like crazy during a song that he should just hold the bottle while singing.

He does drink alot of water. He just can't reach high notes in full voice anymore.

Much Respect. but Kimball live was ALWAYS hit or miss. When he was on it was heaven. but when he hit a bad night which became more frequent. it was REALLY awful. I much prefer the Joseph william's era. and honestly their 2015 album with him is the best album they've made in years.

Williams only lasted like a year or two and out. And then they brought him back around 2015.

Am I the only one that thinks he looks like a guy that drives an El Camino with a cab full of empty camel packs and a bed full of Budweiser cases? Judging by his personality here he seems like the exact opposite
