Wishing all my viewers a *very Happy Christmas* . This film shows that Christmas not always was a festive season with food and presents in abundance. The message of this video is: "Count your Blessings" and make a New Years Resolution to be less selfish and help others in stead, as well as halt the increasing agression in this world. *Here is my Christmas playlist* : kzbin.info/aero/PLP_6hUsQRi8vaFzHH-8A43zIf3IhFpofr FYI: I manually added the orchestral music to "The First Noel": it wasn't easy to synchonize the music with the choir!

One of my grandmas said her family could only afford to heat the first floor. They used horse blankets to stay warm and had multiple kids in each bed. Their water glasses would freeze in the house overnight! No showers, only baths in the tub once a week. They had little money and most had to drop out of school to help support the family. Then all the boys got sent to war. Not better times by any means. I'm not even going to go into the segregation/racism at this time. People truly romanticize the past.

Possibly the couple's only gift, they had no electricity yet (built home with it in '27), kids got a few things. But most importantly, a heart filled with love and laughter was in all, with my great-grandmother's favorite saying. The secret to long life is at least one good belly laugh a day. She lived to 95. (Edit: One from the sixties said christmas, this was datedJune, 1924 with the familyname so maybe anniversary. Still, great example of how cherished something like that was, a few smaller books like a Zane Grey have Christmas and a year in the front, to show the importance of the one or two gifts)

It's odd hearing our cousins from the US singing "Now bring us some plum pudding" when they don't ever eat plum pudding nowadays so might not even know what it is! Was it ever a thing in the US? Plum pudding has no plums in it! In the most common variant of this carol in the UK, we sing "Now bring us some figgy pudding". It's the same thing as plum pudding and does not usually contain figs either: the main ingredients are raisins, sultanas, cherries, nuts, orange and lemon peel, wheat flour, brandy, rum, sherry, whisky, spices. On Christmas cards, it is often shown adorned with a sprig of holly. This Christmas pudding (the most common term for it) is traditionally flambéed with brandy or some other inflammable alcohol in full view of the diners before being carved up and served. It is always eaten around Christmas Day (most often on the day itself) with a creamy topping of brandy sauce, rum sauce, brandy butter, custard, plain cream or (heaven-forbid) ice-cream. Traditionally, the pudding would contained a silver coin (a sixpenny piece when I was young) which would bring good luck to the one who found it. "And we won 't go till we've got some ...!"
@jaysverrisson153618 күн бұрын
As an older American, I also knew the lyrics as "figgy pudding," albeit when I was a little kid I thought they were saying PIGGY pudding, which sounded weird! I don't think plum pudding it was ever really an American thing--it was mostly something we only heard about in readings of A Christmas Carol. However in the U.S., other traditional ethnic deserts are sometimes trotted out at Christmas time amongst descendants of various immigrant groups who came to America in waves during the late 19th and early 20th century. I suspect, though, that such practices are fading as our immigrant ancestors recede ever further from living memory.
