Finally gave the old Marlin a chance to do its work and shot this young doe here at home just in time for Christmas.

The .35 Remington, .32 Winchester special, and the good old .30-30 can bring home the venison today as in yesteryear as long as the hunter, in this case you, does his or her part....But that goes for ANY caliber I don't care how whiz bang modern it is....And you did it right! Congratulations!

Took a 7 pointer (probably 2.5+ years old) last day of gun season, muzzleloader, mid December. 85 yards. Had 3 seconds to decide, aim and take the game. Got it through the lungs and cut off the spine. Didn’t move. I’m thinking of getting a .30-30 for the woods. But also thinking .45-70. I have a .25-06 as my primary deer rifle, the muzzleloader is just backup in case I get into late season. I do archery too, but prefer gun if I can. I need a brush gun. Usually use 00B for brush but then distance is limited. Thoughts, your opinion on .45-70 vs .30-30 for brush.
@josephgalante93510 ай бұрын
I would go with 30-30 still a great amount of power and cheaper ammo as well. .45-70 is gonna ruin more meat for sure

Man I could use a deer right now.. Im finally back to shooting my bow and gun so I guess ill just have to plug a few coyotes since it's all that's open now here in Wisconsin. .

Cool video! I love my 30/30. It was the first gun that my Dad bought for me when I was about 12-13 years old. But once I shot a deer with a .308, and tasted of the goodness of watching them drop in their tracks or go less than 10 yards, the 30/30 became the gun safe queen. One of the last deer that I shot with the 30/30 was an awesome broadside shoulder shot. We tracked it about 5/8 of a mile and it was still alive. .308 turns lungs into cottage cheese.
@CatmanOutdoors6 жыл бұрын
I shoot 150 grain soft tip bullets out of both my 30-30 and .308. Both 30 caliber bullets, the 308 shoots about 430 fps faster, but those flat nose 30-30 bullets punch them hard. I've dropped a few in their tracks but usually go for heart or double lungs and they never run far.

Jeffrey McKee I want a 30-30 but I only have a 20 gage but I might be able to use my grandpas SKS this year
@jackpinebadger2685 жыл бұрын
Yep. The .30-30 can drop 'em in their tracks too. And not damage as much meat as the high-velocity rifles. Super easy to carry, fast on target, and even most economical ammo... I'm a great fan of the .30-30. Incidentally, many a record buck has been harvested by it. Witness the Breen, the King, etc.

Mostly steak and jerky for this one... might try and smoke the shoulder and see how that turns out.
@CD197556 жыл бұрын
Carman.... the easiest way I've found to smoke a shoulder is getting an aluminum pan, putting a layer of onions in the bottom, put in the shoulder and season it with Cajun seasoning. Put onions on top of that then put a small bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce on top and cover in foil. Smoke at 275 for about 4.5 hours. Get some APPLE WOOD chunks and soak them until the water is the color of apple juice. After about 3 hours, take aluminum foil off and add the apple wood to fire for smoke for the last 1.5 hours. It's AMAZING!

I am just curious. Why do everyone that shoots a Deer in broad daylight always shows them picking up the deer at dark? Not being facetious I am serious. Every Deer I've ever Harvested was shot in daylight, found in daylight and photo taken in daylight. Am I missing something? I always wait about 30 minutes after I hear the crash down and then I track it as fast as possible because I am afaid of the Bears and Yotes (Maybe an occasional Bigfoot) taking it, or the meat going bad.

Here in Northwest Missouri we have coyotes bigger than that deer! I use an old H&R Model 158 single shot with a old 4X Weaver scope on it sighted in for 100 yards and this rifle is a tack driver. Using 170 grain Hornady SST ballistic tips that I handload and the deer just drop in their tracks. My son's always made fun of me for using that rifle ( old fat man with a little gun ) but the old fat man was always the first one dragging out a deer with a clean head or heart shot. Anybody who say's a 30-30 isn't big enough is an idiot. I know a lot of deer that would tell you different!
