CHRISTMAS IN BASEL SWITZERLAND: Discovering some of Europe's BEST Christmas Markets

It's CHRISTMAS MARKET SEASON IN SWITZERLAND! Basel Christmas market in Switzerland kicks off on November 23rd and runs through December 23rd, 2023. Basel is so festive during the holiday season, and is known to have some of Europe's BEST Christmas markets. We'll stop by the markets in Munsterplatz and Barfüsserplatz and check out the Christmas Cheer all over and really discover Basler Weihnacht - let's go!

I truly can’t decide if I want to plan my next trip to Switzerland over the holidays to get in on the Christmas markets or go when the weather is beautiful. I was there in September last year, and the weather was absolutely heavenly. It was perfect, the flowers and grass were so brilliant. I think I need to go for several months at a time, so I can get in on both!! 😍

We're going to visit Basel in two weeks, and I'm so happy I found your video showing this year's charm of the city. Can't wait to experience it on our own! Could you please describe a bit the place with the decommissioned gondolas? Where is it? Do you need to pre-book it? We have a restaurant reservation but I'm now thinking of canceling that one and getting into one of those gondolas. :)

My wife and I will be in Zürich for 2 nights in 3 weeks (12/7-8). We were planning on returning our rental car (we’re spending a few days in Germany beforehand) to the Zurich Airport on 12/7 and using public transportation for the remainder. Can you guys suggest/recommend any Christmas Markets in Zürich? Looking for the best because my wife was an Art major, so Friday during the day will be at Art Museums 😂

Basel feels a bit more authentic but Colmar can’t be beat when it comes to decorations - it’s a larger market as well as they have 6 different markets (Basel there are 2 big ones and a good one) but food news is Colmar is just a 45 min train from Basel so you can easily do both

if you are doing a daytrip to Basel from Zurich, do you need to purchase your train tickets in advance?

As a local I can tell you that you don‘t need to buy tickets in advance, nobody does that here 😊 (except for speacial trains like Glacier Express).

As someone who lived in the Basel area for 20 years I‘d say it‘s definitely worth a visit. Especially considering the fact that it’s only a one hour train ride from Zurich to Basel and there are trains approx. every 15-20 minutes…. The list of „must see“ things depends on the season you choose..
