My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

Having never watched a KZbin video ever, I found Chateau Diaries during lockdown. Since then the entertainment has not stopped! It is mid June 2021 and I am watching this episode. It is probably my favourite to date. My son is currently serving overseas with the military and won’t be home until December 2021. I got lost in the moment when the music started and for a second or two got excited by the prospect of Christmas being upon us and having my family around me, it has made me incredibly emotional. That meal looked so amazing! I can’t believe all that was cooked on the Aga. I see why Aga fans are so devoted to it. Cottage cleaned up nicely and you can really see your cozy vision being realized already. When you make yourself a table, I think you should make it a pull-out leaf or make a matching trestle end so that it normally takes up less room but you can move the furniture out of the lounge and host dinners!

What a joy to see your family together. Regardless of what you are doing, where you are in the restoration, you're making the most of the resources at your disposal. It was beautiful and watching you together made my heart sing. We lost my parents within days of each other merely months ago due to COVID complications. Our family was like yours and Stephanie's...friends and family alike will always found a seat at the table. In fact, we were due to have a couple of very close family friends over for Christmas when they tested positive themselves (We are saving celebrations for when they recover & we can get together later).
