Looks great!! I was at the Krakow (Poland) Christmas market in 2015 and even though I liked it very much, it didn't feel as lively and entertaining as the one in Wroclaw.

Eileen Aldis Halo Let me add one important, if not most important, regarding the Vigil. Oplatek - wafer. As a symbol of bread shared by Jesus Christ with Apostels during the last supper. We share oplatek standing face to face to each other, wishing all the best and forgiving guilt, to sit down the table in harmony. Dishes must be meatless. At midnight we go to church for special mass. After that we can meat and drink alcohol. Sorry for my English as I left school 50 years ago. Merry Christmas God Bless You

It's 88% Catholic in Poland and that is reflected in the great Christmas tradition which is the best in the world. A great place for family, incredible celebration. Christmas dinner settings are gorgeous and the spirit, lit with candles, is quite wonderful. In a large family, my grandmother would prepare for 2-3 days cooking and cleaning and all were welcome to visit. Polish food can be amazing made with special traditional recipes and care.

@@EileenAldis Aside from the more popular touristy things I just went on a date day with my boyfriend to the Art-Is-In Bakery which has a great selection of baked goods and breakfast dishes as well as lunches and pizzas if you go later! We also went to the Diefenbunker in Carp which is still technically part of Ottawa but is actually the biggest decommissioned government bunker in Canada that was used during the Cold War in case there was a nuclear disaster. I only learned about it recently but we spent over 3 hours there because it was super interesting and I highly recommend booking a tour to learn more than just what the signage says! I also highly recommend Coconut Lagoon; in my opinion it has some of the best Indian food in the world.

We were just a bit early for the lighting of the Christmas tree! We left Wroclaw on the 4th and it wasn't due to have the lights turned on until tonight. My recommend for a return visit would be hot chocolate at a place called E Wedel on the main square. They do a fabulous range of drinks. The taster hot chocolate consisting of three glasses containing bitter, milk and white hot choc was especially divine.

I have been every year since but only in summer. Well i finally went there this past Xmas and it was great. I had one of those cone shaped pastry things, might be hungarian i think and a mulled wine out of one of those elf boots lol. Then a nice drink in the speak easy mobster bar on the square before flying home. A bit too little .. The most beautiful Wrocław is in the summer. This city has a history of over 1000 years. In the middle of the vast Old Town we have the largest market in Poland, a pearl of architecture - the Gothic town hall and in the town hall the oldest restaurant in Europe. Next to the market square we have a beautiful old university, a bit further there are many islands and the magical island - "Ostrów Tumski" - "the Vatican's Wroclaw" It is a city of 120 bridges, about 40 historic churches and over several hundred bronze figures of dwarfs - various professions. We have amazing parks, the largest ZOO and Aquarium in Poland and around Wroclaw 300 palaces and castles within a radius of approx. 100 km. - Polish Christmas is the smell of pine needles, amazing tasty dishes and several hundred carols - in our opinion, the most beautiful in the world. An empty place at the table is also - the old custom - a place for the soul of the dead. We keep hay under the tablecloth and we wish with wafer. There used to be "carolers" who wandered and sang for a small fee. It was said that on December 24 animals speak with a human voice and it is worth listening to them what they think about us

Wroclaw was a German city and called Breslau until 1945, when all 650,000 German inhabitants were expelled, like the other 3.4 million Germans from surrounding Silesia. This makes Wroclaw, formerly Breslau, the largest city on earth, of which the entirety of its population was expelled. They all had to flee beyond the newly established border river, the Lusatian Neisse. All nice old buildings in Wroclaw from before 1945 were either built by Germans or rebuilt by Poles after the war. The city was basically a German-speaking city from around 1300 till 1945. The descendants of the Slavic founders of the village from before 1300 were of course also expelled in 1945 since they had become German-speaking over time. One wonders what they did with the extensive German graveyards with all the German graves. The old houses of the city keep wondering why they don't understand the new inhabitants anymore. And therefore, it is disrespectful to talk about this city exclusively in a Polish context because most of the architecture you admire there, are the buildings from before 1945.
