You primarily use your fingers to blend, but I've been told repeatedly to not use my fingers because they'll leave oils that will affect the colour and archival qualities. What's your opinion on this?

I've heard it as well and some pastel artists use gloves or other methods to keep their hands off the pastel work, and pastel off their hands. Many don't like the feel of it. I was never told this and have always blended with my fingers as do many pastel artists. I really don't think that the amount of oil transferring from my pastel caked fingertips has much affect on the archival quality of my work. All my older paintings on proper archival materials have not changed in 25 years and I wouldn't expect much change from them over a longer timespan. For me the hands on approach is a big part of my pastel experience so I'll not change it.
