The button is about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch. A yarn needle, it needs to go through the needle with yarn on it.

hi , i followed everything to the T and it didn't fit my cup's too small. what happen? first time making this. i make them all the time. i already have santa cozy and reindeer . so i don't get it.

I don't know About the Reindeer or Santa Cozies, But It's hard for me to help with out seeing your work or the mug you are using. If it's not fitting, you can measure as you go, adjust your hook size to a smaller hook or tighten your tension.
