Christmas just does not feel the same this year! The family thinks this is a result of Archie (Carroll O'Connor) feeling down.
From Season 2, Episode 13 'Christmas Day at the Bunkers'': Archie is depressed at Christmas because his boss canceled his holiday bonus (purportedly for screwing up a work order) and he doesn't know how to break the news to his family.

@ David Urban It took me awhile to figure that one out too. I heard the phrase in the song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”. I finally realized it referenced the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future in “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. I’ve always especially liked the televised version starring George C. Scott as Ebenezer Scrooge.

What always struck me as funny, though, was that, especially in Archie's case, you never saw him eat very much, usually because he got in arguments with Mike, and he was the one who was always clamoring for supper on the table to be served on time.
