Was this movie originally supposed to be a horror movie? think about it- two people decide to go against the town's traditions, everyone else become hostile towards them as a result, and that satanic looking snowman...are we SURE that this wasn't ment to be a horror movie?

In a small town in rural America a couple decide not to celebrate Christmas for a year, noticing how expensive it is. Slowly but suddenly the town begins turning on them as they learn about it and particuarly demand they put a Frosty statue on their roof that everybody puts up every year. They deny still and soon notice something isn't right about their Frosty statue in the basement. It moves around when no ones looking, changes facial expression, and they swear they even see it stare at them out of the corner of their eyes. They put two and two together and realize they need to get out of there but its too late. The entire town is outside literally and metaphorically banging their door down. The rest of the story is up to you.

Oh wow look at that, if you actually look at the comments, all the top ones are actually intelligent. You may disagree with them, but they are all just people sharing their honest opinion mostly in a constructive manor. While there are plenty of cancerous YT comments, the ones that float to the top usually have something important to say that people care about. C'mon Doug, for a critic, you sure do have a major problem with people criticizing you. It's not always about change, many people complain based on quality. The skits are hit or miss and many people think so. The Hocus Pocus review was majorly misleading and IMO horrendously unfunny and poorly written. If you disagree, that's fine, but don't go trying to dismiss my opinion of your show with a "you hate it cause it's different'. Give your fans some more credit than that and actually be proud that they are as critical of you as you have been to films over the years. I respect you a lot as a creator, but your attitude hasn't been the best ever since Demo Reel flopped.

You know man, other than the poor impressions and occasionally awkward cartoons, the old episodes weren't anywhere near as bad as you're making them out to be... I get that you want to improve as an artist, which is hard when idiots constantly ask for stuff you're tired of doing, but the stuff you used to do was funny, well timed and for the most part, properly paced. Hell man "Of Course!" And "I was frozen today" are STILL funny. So, be proud of your old work man. There's a reason we all never stopped loving the Nostalgia Critic.

I hated how the neighborhood treated the Kranks! What the couple does with Christmas is no one else's business. I thought what was insane was Vic Fromeyer getting the other neighbors picketing the Kranks yard over a Frosty decoration. He is just a stupid decoration not a real snowman for crying out loud!
@NWolfsson
@NWolfsson 5 жыл бұрын
It is to be noted, in the original book there is no "redemption" from the Kranks. The story is about how some communities are too much pushy of the "community life" and that peer pressure because they just wanted to spend a good time in a different way is NOT a good thing. The movie also makes a misstep in that there is little to no gradation in the pressure put on them, it starts from "hey, Scrooges!" and the same evening there is a flash mob to harass the wife about that goddamn Frosty. You're supposed to dislike the neighbourhood in the original work, THEY are the antagonist, not Mr Krank
@domocracydestroyer8219
@domocracydestroyer8219 5 жыл бұрын
Mr Critical yes but at the end of the day, it is about how you choose to spend Christmas, if you don’t want to spend it with your family or friends at a party you can to something new like going on a cruise or going to a foreign country or something else. Hell, I skipped Christmas last year and went with my Mum, Dad and younger brother to Thailand.
@fallout3fan623
@fallout3fan623 5 жыл бұрын
@@NWolfsson See that would work. I think that the movie could be remade as a pretty decent horror movie following that same basic idea of a city so wrapped up in itself that it throws people that divulge even the slightest from normal tradition to the wolves. Could be kinda awesome if it was shot like a lynchian nightmare. Or framed as a dystopian nightmare.

Seriously those people should've left the Kranks alone, they didn't do anything wrong. They just wanted to save some money and go on a relaxing vacation, and yet the towns people think this is wrong. Seriously if you look at the movie you can see that the entire neighborhood relies to much on Kranks especially in around Christmas. And the only reason they didn't let the Kranks leave was because they knew they couldn't celebrate Christmas without them. Because to this neighborhood it wouldn't be the same without the Krank's Christmas party. This would have been a better movie if they let the Kranks win, but their daughter had to show up and forced the parents to give up their pride, and their vacation to make her happy. And even after that the neighborhood didn't think they did anything wrong, they even wanted an apology from the Kranks. Trust me this movie is nothing more than an allegory for Peer Pressure. And a sucky one at that, because in the end the Kranks lose give in to their pressure, and are forced to return back to the neighborhood's ways. What a horrible message your trying to convey. And trust me if Santa was really there (which he was). He shouldn't look at this neighborhood and think "These are good people, who just want to celebrate the holidays." But think of them as bad people who tried to force their beliefs on another family that didn't do anything wrong. Which is completely non-Christmas, instead of being merry and giving the Kranks goodwill the towns people were just rude, selfish, jerks who were only thinking about themselves instead of the Kranks. Those people should get coal for presents, and the Kranks should get two tickets to whatever place they wanted to go.
@jagarcia0705

Well said! "How it should have ended" needs to parody this *AWFUL* Christmas movie. Here's how I would have ended it. Kranks Daughter: Mom, dad, why don't you 2 go on a vacation, like a cruise. I mean its not like the whole town will berate on something insignificant & not worth arguing over. If that happen to me I would say "fuck off" & move to another town where people are not so stuck up. You 2 been thinking about people for over 20 years, be greedy for once. What's the worst that could happen? Being guilt shammed into celebrating Christmas. Better go now bye! *everybody is speechless* Mr. Krank: I don't have to say anything...situation is doing that for me. Nearly everybody is unlikable. Mrs Krank too lazy to get something herself. Who goes around asking a butcher for chocolate? That's like asking a car mechanic for shampoo. Mr. Krank could have just skipped Christmas & still gave to charity. Maybe the neighbors would have been only half angry (if that's even possible). The little kid...no scratch that...the little shit is a dumb ass for unlocking a police car door & letting a criminal go. The cops are idiots in 2 ways. 1st they get pissed off when The Kranks don't buy a calendar. Who cares about a calendar? Its not like calendars sustain their lives. 2nd they go to a party, instead of taking a criminal to the police station. Some dumb bitch who works where Mr. Krank works, she gets mad at him when he doesn't buy her perfume. What none of the other coworkers couldn't help you buy perfume? The old guy...where do I even start? He repeatably insults Mr. Krank for no reason & for what? The Kranks skipping Christmas? His wife having cancer? *FUCK THAT ASSHOLE*!! If that were me I'd punch the old geezer in the face & say "I had no reason to punch you, just as you had no reason to insult me. For the record I'm sorry about your wife & I really hope her health improves. However taking out your frustrations on me is inexcusable & in the end insulting me gained you nothing". I could watch Christmas with the Kranks a hundred times, analyze every frame from beginning to the end & still can't figure out why the old fart insulted Mr Krank. I know the real theme of Christmas with The Kranks. Its not 2 people losing the spirit of Christmas. Its a bunch of *DICKHEADED ASSHOLES* who were unable to adapt to change. Guilt shamming people into celebrating Christmas, makes Christmas lose its meaning.

"This would have been a better movie if they let the Kranks win, but their daughter had to show up and forced the parents to give up their pride, and their vacation to make her happy." I am not sure if he mentioned that this was based on a book and if you are referring to that but that is pretty much the end of the book. The daughter calls and says she's in Miami and will be home in 3 hours (or something like that) with her new fiance (she's not wasting any time there really...) and the Kranks try to get a party going but eventually have to ask their neighbours for help after Luther almost gets hurt badly trying to get Frosty up on the roof. But they don't want Claire to know she messed up their special plans for Christmas and the neighbours help hide it. Also no criminal there.

(Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong) Only two differences I've noticed really is that there is no burglar and Marty..who is not santa and is not a guy selling umbrellas. He's just someone Nora met when she was getting last minute groceries. THat's it. Everyone is still a fucking asshole. (for example this what Nora said to Luther after he almost died putting that dumb Frosty up on the roof like she ordered him to) ""I wish I had a camera" she said.walking away "You up there hanging by your feet with half the city watching" And she laughed all the way to the bedroom."
@josephwilles29
@josephwilles29 6 жыл бұрын
Alex Paulino I couldn't agree more. The neighborhood peer pressure was borderline bullying. What if the Kranks decided to be atheist or non-Christian? Too much pressure and burden is shifted onto people during this time of year. I like things like most people so I am not shaming materialism. But, think of fucking people who already long hours at shitty jobs to be coerced by pushy asshole fuckers. This movie made me want to deck the lights out of everyone in the neighborhood. The Kranks were too kind. I want to tell everyone including their fucking dumbass snowflake daughter to fuck off. Go back to Peace Corps and stop shoving Christmas down everyone else's throats.

Why are you bashing your old reviews? Just cause you had a low production value, doesn't mean they sucked. IMO some of your best videos came from that era. You never used memes where they didn't belong.. Your old videos were funny cause they had good writing and humor. I have no problem with your newer skit based reviews; they're still good in their own way, but its unnecessary to imply your old reviews weren't good. And whats with, "never read the comments"? How are you going to address concerns people have? Its not fair to assume all comments are all just negative haters. You can disagree but at least hear what people have to say.

This could've been a great satire of Christmas movies if they didn't keep trying to play the heart-strings (the damn cancer sidestory), use cliched slapstick jokes, removed that goddamn Frosty, was more self-aware or.... you know, this movie needed to be at least PG-13, maybe R-rated instead of being forced into a family-friendly format. Like this... The Kranks decide to spend their Christmas vacation on a cruise or something, but instead of Tim Allen announcing it to everyone, he figures no one will really give a crap and just makes the plans along with Jamie Lee Curtis. One of the neighbors finds out, spreads it to the rest of the neighborhood. I could just see a scene where TA and JLC are driving to work and the neighbors are glaring at them like a "You're in the wrong 'hood" kinda vibe... Hell, maybe they do the Pan from Archer has cancer thing, but it turns out to be fake to play with their emotions. THat's how far they're willing to go to force them to celebrate Christmas

His last speech I always love no matter how many times I've seen it, because as well as being true, it's actually kind of unique for a Christmas message (yeah, I'm not watching this at Christmas time, what of it?). I'm a writer, and so a lot of the time the stories I have written at different arts of my life can represent different parts of my life and what I was like back then when I wrote it. I mean...some of my old stuff is absolute cringy shit, but...sometimes I can look back at it with fondness...cringy fondness, but still fondness...because it shows how much I've changed, and how far I've come. And who knows, maybe the stuff I wrote this morning that I now think is the best thing in the world, five years from now I'll look back on with even more cringy fondness and go "Yeah it's pretty bad...but remember how happy it used to make you? And if it weren't for you starting as a terrible writer, you wouldn't have grown, developed and improved until you were an amazing writer."

I've started being pretty accepting of the flaws in my art, and I kind of embrace it, despite all the cringe that's probably dripping from it. I fear my acceptance, though, because of the possibility that it will stagnate my will and ability to improve. I wish I had less knowledge about these things, so I could learn it bit by bit, but instead I have to adapt the abundance of what I know to an ability that is inexperienced, and the dissonance is really discouraging. I look forward to looking back at these thoughts in hindsight, because right now I don't know what to do with them.

Ok, am I the only one who thought the scenes where Critic made fun of his old days was a bit too much of a shallow parody? I mean, I do genuinely like the ending speech and I think it's one of doug's best moments but I'm sorry, the originals reviews were not really like what Doug painted them as. The clip jokes weren't overused, they were healthily balanced, Critic DID have props on his show (like the ring from the captain planet review or the costumes used in that DVD review of that space movie), he DID have other actors (Rob, Bargov, Jim Jaroz who immortalized the line "SPARKLE SPARKLE SPARKLE"), hell even the memes weren't that overused (People tend to forget that Bat credit card joke was used in about ten videos). Not to mention, most of his classic reviews (like IT, Neverending Story 3, etc) WERE over ten minutes and they were awesome! Here, he acts as if they were nothing but clip riffs and overused jokes but they really weren't. I just think he was making them out to be such worse than they really are. And it kills me to say this but that does kind of weaken the episode (which I genuinely liked). Because Doug isn't comparing his new format to an old format, he's comparing his new format to an exxagerrated version of his old format and it's pretty biased. But even that was a big flaw I still really loved that ending, with Santa Christ and Old Critic looking at New Critic and smiling, Old and New Critic having learned something valuable. Hell, I even like the bickering that He had with Malcolm and Tamara at the end, to me that was more of a comedic bickering than actual cruel bickering. The only thing that would've made that ending even better was if the ending credits played The nostalgia Critic anthem.

Ok, so.... the Kranks do and say horrible shit in this movie, I agree with that. But they are hardly the only horrible people in this movie. Everyone is terrible. The Kranks should still have given to charity and their neighbors should have RESPECTED that they didn't want to do Christmas that year. That's forcing your own traditions and beliefs down someone's throats, it's just not ok.
@OliverTCrowe
@OliverTCrowe 2 жыл бұрын
I agree and also disagree. Charities are just that, charities, and they shouldn't be expected as much as just appreciated. It's also suggested that they give to charity every year including to the local police force for their calanders and to the Boy Scouts when it comes to buying a Christmas tree...which is much more than many people do anyways. Is it really that "horrible" when you want to take one year off from doing that so you can focus on yourself for once after the assumingly many years in your kid's life that you donated and gave? Granted, the way they presented it was pretty horrible, but the main characters overall were just pretty unlikeable and horrible throughout. But there's nothing wrong with taking a year off from donating, especially if you've already done it so much that people "expect" it from you.
@letsdostuff7767
@letsdostuff7767 Жыл бұрын
To be fair in the movie they do actually still give to the charities. He doesn't show the scene but when they're in bed the wife is still disagreeing with the trip. The dialogue goes something like this..... Mr. Krank, "You're really going to let $600 get in the way of a cruise vacation?" Mrs. Krank, "No honey. You're going to let $600 get in the way." Then Tim Allen agrees to donate and that's the moment you see Jamie Lee Curtis smiling in the review agreeing to it.

Thing is, I did recently see that part of the movie (it was on TV as my mother was flipping through the channels), and they actually did donate. Mrs. Krank essentially gave her husband a WTF look, and he consented to still donate to charities, but still do the boycott for everything else.

I'd say yes on that. While it's nice to see some movies go out of the cliche of the cozy happy fun family friendly Christmas trope, this was just not a good example. Had the main characters been less insufferable, the jokes been funnier and not as stupid as NC pointed out, and the weird message that conforming to what you're pressured to by your peers being a good thing not existing, the premise of this movie would have been better. I was totally fine with the jerk OCD neighbors because that was kind of funny seeing the main characters having to deal with that just for wanting to take a year off since their daughter had finally moved. A couple usually known for these extravagant celebrations wanting to take a year off only to be met resistance by their neighbors who rely on it? That's a great premise. But the execution was super poor, and the true message should have been for the neighbors to understand that it's okay to take a break every once in a while when your child is all grown up. But since the main characters were so unlikeable at the start, it already began things in a muddy way.

My problem with the Hocus Pocus video wasn't that it was all a skit, because that's what the Jurassic World review was, and I liked that. The difference is that I could still watch the Jurassic World review without having seen the movie and laugh at it, because you were explaining what was going on. But I've never seen Hocus Pocus, and there was no actual talking about the movie in that video. Just acting out all the problems, and for someone with no context, it gets really really boring really really fast. Still, I agree with the sentiment that things need to change and evolve over time, but I also think there's a nice middle ground to find. No one can argue that you're videos have gotten demonstrably better over time, but the core I show up to watch is to hear your insight and criticism of a movie, while being entertained with comedy. If a sketch helps illustrate a point or get across a joke better, then I'm fine with it. I can't remember what review it was, but you did one where there was a REALLY long sketch as the intro, like 5 minutes plus before the review started. That's really pushing what I'll tolerate in terms of sketch comedy.

That still doesn't excuse the neighbors' initial ugly reactions, like at the restaurant where they have a pretty snide attitude. They refuse to cooperate with their neighbors because of the way everyone reacts to the decision like they just said they were atheists. Because they're understandably angry and don't think the neighbors deserve to be cooperated with.

I appreciate the changes because there's clearly a lot of work put into the new stuff and I don't necessarily know what I'm getting myself into when I watch a video. Doing the same thing every week sucks. People in the audience burn out and the endless repetition can basically drain your soul over the years. It's really a bummer to see success bash all creativity out of someone who makes online video content. CinemaSins used to have several parallel shows but once they really took off the channel was exclusively Everything Wrong With videos for a while. They seemed to be afraid to do anything but what made them famous, and the content suffered for it. It fell into all the same problems that early nostalgic critic had: a simple yet very restrictive structure, mass produced content, and repetitive jokes that appeal to the Family Guy "hah, I recognize that" demographic. Evolving is great. There will always be people who don't like the changes, and the criticisms those people pose can be entirely valid, but creators should try to focus on what they find fulfilling. This applies to all jobs, really. People aspire to do something for a living that feels more worthwhile. I can't help but notice that Nostalgia Critic was making White Wall videos before I went to college and was still making them after I graduated. So many years of making one kind of video over and over again. It's like an assembly line. Now he's doing these nice, meaty projects where he gets to apply what he's learned over all these years. Some things are going to work and some things won't. If you're not making mistakes then you're not taking risks. If you're not taking risks then you become stagnant. That's where Adam Sandler is right now, just doing what works and never challenging himself or really working at his art.

+Keith Ballard I totally agree, mate. I feel bad he had to quite on Demo Reel because it was failing so much. It seemed like he really wanted to do it. I hope doing the Nostalgia Critic like this is a compromise he's comfortable with. The sketches don't always work but honestly I think that's just the nature of sketch comedy really. It's very hit and miss I think. But taking a risk on something new is better than stagnating.

Doug has a point here. A series must grow and evolve or else it stops being interesting. I've been watching NC since ~2009, and while I like the old reviews for what they are, the internet has changed. Old media is slowly starting to take internet personalities seriously. Doug has a budget now, so why _not_ make his show more professional? Any artist wants to be proud of their work and sees flaws laypeople don't. Very few artists want to be pigeonholed. Doug's already been pigeonholed as Nostalgia Critic (poor Demo Reel), so he has to spice it up to keep _himself_ interested. Otherwise it's just another job like the one he so famously quit when he went full-time with being a critic. PS: It's interesting to see different critics' takes on the same material. Film Brain hated the movie too, but instead of being annoyed at its stupid moments, he was outright offended by its message of conformity (which Doug only barely touches on).
@SunnysFilms
@SunnysFilms 5 жыл бұрын
The one thing I don't understand about people discussing back and forth about how Doug has changed his reviews so much (Doug and Rob, actually. A lot of people seem forget Rob. lol) is that only about half of his reviews involve the newer format. Only about half of his reviews incorporate skits. Less than 1/4 of his reviews are clipless. And about half of them follow his old format sans some of his older jokes like "Timing!" and "Big Lipped Alligator Moment" which are, by now, a bit cliche. It's not that he abandoned his old style. It's that he also incorporated a new one. And for those complaining that Critic's skits go on too long, most are under a minute and, watch his review of Eight Crazy Nights then tell me he didn't do long, drawn out skits in the past too. Nostalgia Critic managed to do reviews much the same way he always did - as well as in new ways to keep it as fresh as possible. But, then, if you never change, people accuse you of being lazy and, if you do, people complain that you used to be better. It's a lose/lose situation too much of the time.

My main problem with the skits is how predictable they are. For example, at 15:35 the Critic says he wouldn't act weird if someone played music he didn't like. We are then treated to a 30 second skit showing the Critic acting weird around music he doesn't like. The reason the old style of reviewing worked so well is because the jokes were quick, unpredictable, and got straight to the point.

I like the old cutaway jokes better than the newer sketch jokes. The old jokes were quick and too the point...the sketches drag on forever sometimes, and I will start getting bored and fast forward them until the review starts again. Doug acts like he's embarrassed or ashamed by how his reviews used to be...but he needs to keep in mind that his old review style is the reason he got so popular in the first place. Hell, go watch the new Independence Day trailer, and there's a bunch of people in the comments asking, "What about Boomer?!"

I like NC, and even still like some of the videos now. But I disagree with what some of the stuff NC says. Like, the thing about evolving to stay relevant. Some reviewers still make videos exactly like they did over 5 years ago (I.e Jeremy Jahns) and they're still just as, or even more relevant than they were when they started. And then what he said about how the clip less reviews get a lot of hits. It just sort of suggests he doesn't read what people say about the videos and just cares about the hits. And the last point I have to say is that he doesn't say anything good about his old reviews. All he says about them is they were lazy, repetitive, and 'if there's time an actual analysis of the movie'. That last point. He says it as if some of his older reviews didn't actually have an analysis of the movie, even though the whole videos WERE analysis. Just feels like he doesn't read the comments and made this video to defend the new videos.
@tommycarr8111
@tommycarr8111 8 жыл бұрын
And never reading the comments is a stupid thing to do. That's how you evolve, go by what people say about your videos. And "We shouldn't be ashamed about our past". I don't get the comment section some times. Does no one see what he is trying to do!? He is saying that people will move on and you usually have to move on and evolve if he just stayed to his old way of reviewing he may sink into obscurity or people would find it old like the movie. The movie uses so many old Christmas movie tropes that it just gets old and isn't funny the movie needs to learn that if it wants to either be relevant or funny you gotta bring something new to the table. Now don't get me wrong I love the Old Nostalgia Critic but I also love the New Nostalgia Critic, but if he just stuck to the same routines over and over again we would eventually find it just the same thing over and over again. Yet I think because of this change it allows us to watch the old Critic and still get a laugh out of it because well it's different from the Newer Critic. Now for my opinion on the clipless reviews they just arn't my cup of tea though I did like the Batman Vs. Superman review. To be honest he while on a couple of parts he does seem to be a little bit mean to his past self he does at the end say not just him but everybody shouldn't be ashamed of the past but they need to learn to evolve and become diffrent. Though I don't get why people think he is giving a middle finger to the audience who likes the Old Critic more? That clearly isn't his intention and it shows.

Every time I think I've outgrown him, he comes out with something gold. Doug, you are the best. Your speech was very Nietzschean in that the present should be the focus of our lives, which is something we should all get behind. You also opened my eyes about my feelings towards your newer stuff. I was upset that it wasn't traditional without even really knowing why. I guess since your old work was so nostalgic and funny to me and some of the first real Internet comedy that I considered myself an original fan, a part of something great and enjoyable. I was with you through everything, and watching you grow and develop alongside your work I never really noticed how it's gotten better. I ironically felt nostalgia for the old nostalgia critic, which I realize is now a bit silly. I can always watch the old videos and laugh, but I'll always be there to see the new one both out of enjoyment and sheer appreciation for what you do. I doubt you personally read most of these, and this isn't even on your website, but it feels good to write regardless. I have a feeling that most of the people commenting about NC's old format didn't watch up to his ending monologue. Sure, he criticizes his old videos (and let's be honest; as entertaining as they were, they had a lot of flaws). But he also seems to take a step back and realize that the old reviews aren't as bad as he remembered them being. The entire message of this review was that the past was both good and bad, but in the end change isn't something to hate or fear. He isn't maliciously mocking the people who like the old reviews, or making it seem like his more recent videos are the be-all, end-all. Everyone just needs actually listen to what he's saying, instead of posting their gut reaction.

Yes the sketches can be a bit unnerving for me but as long as he finds a way to mix old and new into his reviews in the future, i can still feel that same nostalgia while enjoying the present reviews he gives us.And his commercial reviews were awesome too :)

Doug, I feel like your best reviews are your Christmas reviews, they have the best morals, messages, and speeches at the end of each review. Your Christmas Tree review, Christmas Story 2, this review, and your I'll Be Home for Christmas, each have original, complex, and deep messages that can help change and inspire people to become better people. These videos are the best way to end each year. These videos have messages that help me for my New Year's Revolutions.

I find the "never read the comments" rule really backwards. The point of the comments are to critique the video so the creator can learn and improve the videos. There are plenty of mean and troll commenters but you also can't just ignore them and think what you're doing is better because you think so.

A lot of entertainers became entertainers because they have a lot of internal pain that they don't wish on anyone else, so they feel they owe it to the world to make it at least a little more tolerable with humor. A lot of KZbinrs have quit being KZbinrs or turned off the comments because sometimes a particular comment will hit a particular nerve with them, even if the commenter didn't really intend to make the KZbinr feel like shit.
@shwahgamer
@shwahgamer 7 жыл бұрын
Why bother reading the comments at all when a good 80% of them don't even talk about the video? Especially on more popular videos; it's all "first," "repeating funny joke from the video to get likes," "talking about how attractive someone in the video was" and other inane bull like that. Unless the video is actually about a serious topic worth discussing, most of the comments will be like the ones I listed rather than actually talking about the video. And heck some people just go to popular videos to comment about themselves, and why you should be watching them instead. It's spam, and you're supposed to flag them for it, but they continue to do it. In the end, you shouldn't avoid the comments because of the hateful people; you should avoid them because the stupid people. Because they're the worst for not making any positive or negative contributions to your work.

You know, this Movie is even a really bad Adaptation. In the Book, Jamie Lee Curtises character only goes on the christmas vacation trip, when they at least donate the money to the Charity. And the reason, why the entire street becomes a bunchs of A-holes is, because of a competion, which Street looks more "Christmas". And when one house decides to cancel christmas, I think, I don´t have to explain, why this is bad. And the funny thing is, I never read the Novel, it was based on. All this just is from the brief desription on the back of the Book.

That would have been a much better movie and would have made more sense. But I guess they didn't want the people in the neighborhood look like a bunch of competitive a-holes, who just want to win a competition. And instead turned them into people who believe in the spirit of Christmas (even though they were all completely obsessed). That it is a time of tradition, and since that Kranks played such a huge part in the entire neighborhood's Christmas. They wouldn't be able to truly celebrate it, even though by that logical in is wrong. Those people should have accepted the Kranks wishes and left them alone, and would have continued their Christmas tradition without them. And if it hadn't been for the daughter showing up, the Franks would have gotten their vacation Christmas. And the worst part is after this Christmas they probably won't be able to do it again. Because next year the neighborhood will be watching them like a hawk, when Christmas comes around the corner.
