Hi Friend! I hope you're doing marvellously well! I got to visit the great, Christopher Thorn over at his home studio! Christopher was in the band Blind Melon and has produced and engineered some great records as well! He is very talented and I had a blast talking music with him. In the video, we talk about his journey, get a look at his studio and all of the gear, and of course chat about music! I hope you enjoy the video and please leave lots of comments! Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren

I laughed out loud when Christopher said that about half the mics didn't work for his first session, I could "guess that punchline" (team Coco!) right away - of course it was a phantom power thing, and to learn about that AFTER buying one of the sexiest consoles ever... man that was hilarious. Kind of like buying a Formula 1 race car and asking "uh... what's a clutch?" Christopher seems like a great guy, his studio looks fantastic, the gear collection and the instrument collection are perfectly assembled... and he makes great music with it. Thanks Christopher and Warren!

Alright, I know I comment on just about everyone of these but this one is close to my heart in a way like no others. So much of what I am as a musician and thus producer is influenced by the band Christopher was in, and his playing. I can not put into words how much Blind Melon means to me to this day. There was a point where I was in the grip of 80mg. of methadone ripping itself from my body, days without sleep, and the pain of my body rejecting everything I had become over the last four years, and I listened to "Walk" over and over and over. "And I cant believe I have to bang my head against this wall again." That was a long time ago, and I am wiser now, and can look back and know that part of the reason I wasn't picking up the phone to end the pain I was in was because the last minute and twenty seconds of "Deserted" God, that outro gave me strength. And watching them boys at woodstock perform time with Shannon screaming, let me go, let me go..... that moment is what I strive to every time I write. It was a work of art, timeless, pure. Christopher, if you read this, thank you so much. If you ever care to see some of the saplings from the seeds yall left in your wake, put Jeb Stuart Productions, (the S at the end is essential apparently) , in the search bar of youtube. Hope I do ya proud

Thanks for another great one, Warren! Loved it! 1064s (same as 1066s without the concentric knobs), always preferable to the 1073. The sitar guitar that is heard on recordings from the '60s and '70s, was probably, more times than not, done by Vinnie Bell. (Vincent Bell on the Danelectro guitars.) For those who don't know, Vinnie was (probably) the number 1 call New York session guitarist in his day and was often flown out to Los Angeles (and other locations) to make his contribution to a recording. I love the fact that Chris is not so technical, and that he learned by doing. "Use your ears," as we say.

Hi Warren a bit of trivia, a nerd buddy says that in the 80's and 90's most British Records have that rather splashy Lexicon reverb because the power supply in Europe is different than in the States this caused the Lexicon to have a different more splashy (My Term) Quality to them than in the US, Recordings And that some bands came to the US to record to have that American sound. Personally I love the vibeyness on the British recordings a lot. true/false?

Hey Warren, Please visit this link for some quick info on baking your tapes. www.tangible-technology.com/tape/baking1.html Secondly, DAT tapes are digital and once they loose their sync, or the heads get dirty, they get confused, and you'll go out of sync and get noise. (think data corruption on a laptop hard drive, it's the same thing.) The first thing to do is to clean the heads before you start. Consider having a VCR repair person show you how to do it because of the micro rotating heads and the age of the unit. Then, bake the heck out of the tape to make it playable. If not, it will immediately coat the heads again. Then, for sanity's sake, record a sine wave from 20hz to 15khz, then read it, it should be close to 4db until you get under 100hz then it will drop off fast. Then look at the heads again with a good magnifying glass to see if oxide is/are on the heads. Lastly, here's a dehydrator for small and large tapes- Excalibur 2900 Dehydrator 9 Tray Model Good luck! Scotty

Hi +petascalecomputing Thanks for the tips!! Yes horrible to hear that DAT's deteriorate so badly! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren!
@petascalecomputing8 жыл бұрын
+Produce Like A Pro The good part is a digital signal will never degrade, and the processor is just looking for all of the bits to make a byte, then either send it out the digital path or a/d convert it etc. If you can get a DAT with digital output your golden because you will have no signal degradation other than a possible phase shift that you can fix in post. You could just have a misaligned, dirty, or bad heads, and all of the tapes could be readable, but for sure, consider getting the data off to a disk. Take Care!
