I just realized I need a Christopher Tin Christmas album in my life.

A genuine question, why does most ancient Roman themed music always have the Armenian instrument duduk in it? From Rome 2, Gladiator, even The Passion of The Christ all got the duduk in their soundtrack.
@christophertin2 жыл бұрын
Can’t speak for others but I just LOVE duduk and try to squeeze it in anywhere even remotely appropriate. :) (Also I have a fantastic player… Sandro Friedrich.)

@@christophertin hahaha yeah I also absolutely love them tho, that's why I'm not complaining. It adds that deep, ancient dramatic feeling and energy to a soundtrack.

@@JuliusSurya maybe its a matter of connotation. As much as the instrument has a literal origin and culture from which it's from, its tone has a mood or connotation that has been built through previous work, and associations. Maybe a lot of Roman themed music use it precisely because a lot of Roman themed music use it, and now the instrument carries that ancient, Roman and classical association that makes future artists want to use it for similar works. Speaking as a visual artist/designer, I sometimes use 20s - 70s era graphic design to give a futuristic feel, like Art Deco or Swiss design, Not because those graphics are actually futuristic, they are half a century old, but because they have a strong history in futuristic work, and are now just associated with sci fi.

no other instrument conveys the mood of that era like the duduk; not the harp, not the drum, nothing

I haven't heard of Old World but i definitely have heard of Civilization since civ 3 is my all time favourite game. This sounds extremely fitting for a Civilization game so i imagine it is the same for Old World

There is a reason why Christopher Tin was involved in Civlization. This soundtrack shows the passion about old unheard melodies, combined with old and modern instruments.

Sounds hypnotic. Never heard of Old World but after looking it up, I'm not surprised that it was developed by the same lead designer of Civiilzation IV. And this reminds me of the OST to HBO's Rome. Hypnotic, captivating, and evokes that sense of turbulent yet subtle, glorious but bloody transition between dynasties and empires. Like a sort of calm before the storm (the augur warning of disaster) or the aftermath of an ancient civil war or some calamity.

It’s a shame they stopped only after 2 seasons smh the show deserved much more seasons, especially as they were on Augustus story

@Christopher Tin listening to Old World is giving me shivers. Thank for this amazing travel in time. From the core of my heart, could you get a chance to do the whole Civ VII soundtrack? It is your "game" to capture the time and essence.

Gracias!

Thats a duduk: an armenian instrument that hws nothing to do eith rome. They would play the aulos, lyre, trumpets and the hydraulis, an ancient form of organ
@bengrunewald64872 жыл бұрын
Someone already asked/answered that in a previous comment, but the short version is that the duduk is used for the feeling that it evokes, not it's historical origin. It's just musical shorthand, like a tuba representing a (usually) overweight comic relief character. (Again, not because tubas were invented by a nomadic tribe of overweight comic relief characters, but because the sound is something audiences easily associate with that specific kind of character). Hope that makes sense.
