Ii'm 78yrs old, I grew up in a era when all things were done like this. you did not replace a part. you repaired it. Generators. Starters. fuel pumps etc. then the throw away era came in and society became a throw away and replace it one. Nice to see its come full circle and there is still the chance to do some good old repair and fix it. to get it going again. Thank you for a nicely done tutorial. and for sharing.

Someday maybe we'll (need) to go back to the repair of things vs replace and expend resources. Glad most alternators are returned/core charge then remanufactured, which tells you something right there!! (I e., with great tutorials like you provide and a few bucks and some time, these things can be redone ourselves in some situations). Thanks for your tutorial.

I'm an ASE Master certified auto mechanic with 40 years experience and what you have shown in this video used to be a big part of what a shop technician did as his work but sadly most shops have gone to just replacing the alternator as an assembly. I still repair as many assemblies as I can so that I can get the labor pay rather than spend it on parts.

It's a shame, these day everyone treats everything as disposable. We stopped using plastic bags, but while in the automotive industry not much is repaired anymore, 500 million water pumps as an example disposed of a year rather then repaired, then 500 million more manufactured, and we talk about pollution.

generally, replacing components takes less time than rebuilding components. this is no different in the aviation field. parts can be rebuilt offsite in a controlled environment such as a factory that specializes in rebuilding specific parts.

That DIY culture, shared by sailors around the world, is inspiring! In some ways it can be a little frustrating since professional mechanics only rarely fix subunits like this. They favour replacing the whole unit with a warrantied part, to protect themselves from the painful experience of a callback. Ultimately this leads to some difficulty finding small parts, for those of us willing to go through the extra effort. Thanks for another contribution here.

Same here girl ! I had to replace my alternator along with the VTEC solenoid, drive belt , hydraulic (total pain in the ass) tensioner pulley for my drive belt… but it’s done and running . I kept my old alternator because I think probably just needs to be cleaned and possibly change the bushings and I have no doubt i can repair it . why would I trade it in to get a $30 core charge back when it’ll be worth $200+ fixed? I love mechanics though and I wish I knew more than I did but I pretty much told myself everything I know and I’ve successfully done everything on one vehicle or another including timing belt And repaired my fuel pump in one vehicle. about the only thing I haven’t done is replace the entire engine, transmission , nothing involving head gaskets or anything with the suspension. I watched so many videos, like this one, where they all talk about the problems that are not shown on camera. I spent 3 hours getting it off, but not even out of my truck. It would be nice if the next guy that has to replace one, who has done it once before, film all the really difficult stuff if not given a heads up. The power steering bolts are not too bad to get to if you know exactly where they are. I put the socket on first, then the ratchet. There are only 2 of the screws needed around 11 and 3 o'clock position. On one of the other videos, it showed the 2nd bolt. To be honest, its around the 3 or 4 o'clock and you can hardly see any part of it...but you can find it easy with the socket. He talks about it, but one other video actually shows it being done. Next, it is much easier to pull it out from the side like he did, but only if you take out the bolt that the alternator hangs on. Its an E socket 10mm. It is so long that it gets in the way when you try and wiggle it out. Once its out, you can get it out with very mild wiggling. Lastly (I should have gone in order), but even though the 2 top bolts are hidden, one of the 2 bottom bolts are a pain in the ass if you you don't get the tips.....First one is not so bad, you may be able to break it open with a wrench or ratchet. The other one is what he described. You have to get a 14mm combination for the back....i used a pry bar under the engine for leverage as they are on super tight. The screw is long and it cant come straight out because of the bracket in the way. It is the bracket to has some hydraulic lines attached to it on the alternator. You can move the lines mostly out of the way. I haven't even started putting it back together yet.....waiting on the alternator to come in. Other recommendation I would make is not to order the alternator until you can get eyes on it. There you can get the oem part number because my truck shows 3 different ones with my vin number....the stores always asking about dvd and tow package. I don't have a rear dvd package and I didn't see the tow package on my dealer sticker....but I had a 150a alternator. I ordered it after I could see the part number... I understand why you don't see some of these pointers, so no fault of his own cuz he's grinding trying to figure it put and when does, its too late and he is not going to backwards to show what he just did. I hope all of the learning pains result in a fairly straight forward assembly. We'll see...but of anyone who has seen this video ever has to do one of these again, please show how you take out each bolt and the tools used. It will save the next guy a lot of trouble and headache. At my man spoke bout some of his issues so I was made aware of the problem, but must say this was a bear without being able to visualize the headaches it brings.....Agree with many, I have removed many alternators for a shade tree guy and this was the absolute worst.

Interesting and informative. Been a mechanic for almost 30 years now and never rebuilt an alternator. Used ones go for $35 to $75 and remans generally $130 - $200 so it doesn't pay to fix them with parts and labor. I am sure there are specialty exotics that It would pay to do this for myself. However, I have never had one I couldn't get for a reasonable price. If it paid to rebuild them I would do it for a living, and you would be my reference material publisher 😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I always like mechanics astute enough to actually find the problem and fix it instead of just replacing the entire part. I notice they do this in Mexico, but not in the USA - often, you may be better off with the original part instead of another one that could have other issues.

They swap out the Alternator or a rebuilt one here, but in Mexico they go inside the Alternator and rebuild it usually replacing the brushes that wear out first. AND in Mex. they'll work on Sunday if you need help, so you can return and be back to work on Monday!!! Same situation with Automatic Transmissions - in the USA they swap it out for one they rebuilt and no one knows if it's been well cared for or not. In Mex., they replace the high gear plates that get the most wear and put in new plates (or disks). I feel more comfortable in Mex. because I return with the same transmission that's in good shape except for the worn out disks. You pay maybe $3-4,000 in the USA and maybe $650 in Mexico for the exact same end result of having a working car again.

Good idea. I ordered a replacement alternator but afterwards saw this video and decided to repair my old one with new brushes and new voltage regulator. Cost me $24.00 and the shipping was free. Took a couple minutes to replace the regulator and brushes and now I have a spare alternator for when the new one goes bad. Christopher did a great job on this vid, no?

It's always a good idea to rebuild OEM alternators. Usually an easy job. New aftermarket ones (or worse re-manufactured) are usually never on par with the quality standards compared to OEM. Especially if you own a Japanese/German car.

Sharp pointed center punch and a light hand with a small hammer can make the best reassembly guide marks you need for a small component like an alternator. Front DE Hsg=1 punch mark, stator=1 punch mark in line with the hsg mark. 2 marks on the other end of the stator aligned to 2 marks on the next housing, and so on for each additional removable part works for almost any disassembly. 8:49-Slot u-wedges appear to have deformed from excessive heat. Wound stator units are dipped in varnish (usually) and baked at minimum of 350 Deg F for 3 to 5 hours. Even that heat does not deform slot wedges.

I used to work in a shop many years ago where we rebuilt alternators for Ford. Most of the time it was bad diods or a burned up stator. Another department went over the rotors but sometimes those would be bad too. We would tear down a couple hundred a time, clean them up and check all the parts before reassembly. All of ours got new brushed and bearings. GMs had a diode trio that would often fail.

I purchased a battery 11-24-2019, and I had my alternator replaced, with a rebuilt one on my 2006 Ford five hundred on 10-13-2017 and a new battery. My car is showing the same symptoms again today, I think it's the alternator again. I've already replaced the alternator twice previously, over the last 10 years. I bought the car new. I wonder if I should just break down and buy an oem from a Ford dealer. It will probably cost twice what a rebuilt alternator ($209.92), but in the long run may be best. Thank you, John

Excellent excellent video Chris. I wanted to check that I had done my alternator rebuild correctly. The only bits I didn't properly check were the resistances with my meter. Unfortunately it's now back in the car. My only feedback is that the video was a wee bit blury when you were showing where the solder was meant to be. That was all. Again, Excellent video.

Me to! I had a failed alternator recently and $80 at the junk yard and about 15 minutes to swap it over had me back on the road with no issues. I am all for fixing things too, but for some reason (for me) electrickery has just never been worth messing with because I don't know enough about it to know where to set my multi-meter or what tests to perform etc. A Lot of these vids presume some sort of electrickery knowledge back ground, that I just don't have. Even tho I am good to go with my replacement used $80 junkyard alternator - part of me would LIKE to fix the old one, if only to have a "replacement spare" ready and waiting, just in case the used junkyard replacement up and dies for any reason anytime soon. Maybe I will tear it down... i wouldn't know how to test for splattered diodes etc once I do tho. To be honest, any fool can tear something down given enough time and a big enough hammer but it takes a good man to put it back together right. This vid doesn't actually show that (putting it back together successfully). How do we know you fixed it? Maybe your just good at breaking stuff down and lets face it my 3 year old can wreck stuff - that doesn't take any particular talent. $50 bucks for a replacement part and all that work, versus $80 at the junkyard and 15 minutes with 2 spanner s to swap it out and be back on the road?. Just how i see it, OMMV (Others Mileage May Vary).

Hey Chris, nice video. I'm an amateur mechanic but a professional electronic technician. As such it was a nice tip you mentioned silver solder. But out of curiosity, was it not possible for you to make a mechanical connection and then solder those wires down yourself onto what was left of the original diode assembly?

Normally its worn brushes, and thats an easy fix. Otherwise find a second hand alternator online (we love recycling right?). Should be getting about 14v out of an alternator; it not there is something wrong with it. Final tip from me: buy common old cars; they are easy and cheap to get breakers parts online. Couldn't agree more about buying the right kind of car: I can find any parts I want for our car in a scrapyard and, because this model is so common, new aftermarket parts are 'cheap as chips' too. Cheers, Chris 👍

Alastair Munro Normally? You obviously are not as intelligent as Random Chris. Leave him to the commenting please lol. Diodes in the rectifier and brushes are the most common failures of alternators. Easy? Only sometimes they are easy. You obviously have not replaced many brushes in alternators. And to suggest one should buy an older car so that the alternator is easy to work on just makes you sound like one confused soul.

Yes, and ladies. I am a lady trying to repair her alternator. It's good to know that it still needed a $25 part. The question is, with rebuilt parts costing $90 and $70, Is it worth the effort on your own vehicle ? May make more sense for hobbiest with an extra car or someone that has a free alternator they want to rebuild just for kicks.

Hi Glenn, thank you for your comment. My [late] dad was a very handy guy and taught me, by example, to get stuck into anything. He involved me from a young age and taught me a lot whilst I 'helped' [hindered!] him fixing outboard engines, motorbikes etc. I joined the Royal Air Force at 17 years old and spent 7.5 years as an aircraft technician, maintaining fast jets and helicopters. (2 of these years were spent in full time technical training.) Then once I left the RAF I started working offshore with ROV's and have therefore learnt about electrical systems, electronics and fibre optics. I was also a boat dealer for a few years and have built around 15 websites so far... Oh, and my wife and I completely refurbished a 1960's apartment - all DIY. I have my first apprentice - my 8 week old baby daughter! I'm going to do my best to pass on the 'you can do anything if you put your mind to it' attitude to her and also pass on some technical skills too because girls can be just as good at this stuff as guys. There you are then - I bet you weren't expecting a life story!... Cheers, Chris 👍

Hi Glenn, everything happens for a reason. Enjoy your Christmas with your family and then I highly recommend that you do something in time for the 1st January... I've been doing this for the last 5 years or so and it is incredibly effective. Spend some time thinking about what you want to achieve in 2018. Make a small bullet point list (credit card size or smaller) with about 5 things on it. You can put whatever you want on there, but make the goals ambitious to the point that some of them may seem unachievable. Get your list and either laminate it or put some tape on it so that it will last then put it in your wallet and carry it around with you everywhere you go. You will be amazed at what happens! You won't necessarily reach every single goal because often what you actually want changes as time goes by, but you will often exceed the goals that you set yourself. As an example one of my goals for 2017 was to start a KZbin channel about sailing and get 2000 subscribers. My wife and I opened that channel in February 2017 and we have almost 5000 subscribers... Setting and writing down your goals in this way really works. IF you decide to do this then I can't wait to hear from you next December to hear how you have got on! You need to explain what "good" means to people who don't know, like if I look on my meter for what you tested there is no "good" reading. Explain what good means as in 14.6 volts or less than 5 ohms of resistance, etc.

Hey Chris😃 really grateful for your advice and tutorial, I have got the alternator apart in all the bits you were showing and I noticed the clutch wasn't slipping one way as you demonstrated, it didn't slip either way... The brushes are fairly long still so now I may have to take the disassembled thingy to the auto lecky for the final verdict on what is wrong with it... And cost for a new part etc....
