Has the Army life gotten easier or harder?

Veterans often tell stories about how it was much harder when they were in the Army. They might even say the Army has gotten weak or soft compared to back in their day. Let me tell you about some things I think were easier and some things that were harder when I was in the Army.

Definitely agree with the uniforms. Hated having to shine boots while new soldiers coming in got the acu and spent their evenings playing Xbox and trying to sleep with each other’s girlfriends.

I don't think that the U.S. Army has gotten harder or easier. I do believe that the Army has gotten better than when I first joined back in the 1990's. Enjoyed the video. Everything you mentioned is spot on.

Pretty good vid. Brought back many memories of how it was. I think it was harder, we didn’t have athletic shoes to train, we had two pairs of black boots and we alternate them each day, of course we ran in them. I remember being out in the field doing infantry training and it rained all day, completely soaked and full of Kentucky mud, that was miserable.

I've been in since the summer of 1989 and will retire in the next 14 months or so. This is refreshing and I think I mostly agree. I definitely agree with your perspective; some things--and it depends on the individual of course--got easier and others harder. You also got after some Army cultural things and this was good to listen to as well. Super video!

I joined in 1977 and the 1SG and CO had their offices in the barracks and they were constantly in our business. the 1SG would just go from room to room with his pass key just snooping around. we had 3 to a room with open bay, certainly no privacy. We had the 5 event PT testback then. we had the run, pushups, situps, crabcrawl and run dodge and jump. Plus we did PT in combat boots, t shirt and fatigue pants.

Circa 1994. Had a single 1Sgt. He would hang out the barracks and drink with us as we cleaned the barracks. After a few weeks of this. Commander told TOP to get a life as. Stay away from the barracks 😂

I used to love Polishing boots, crisp uniform, berret was shaped. I'd get drunk and polish lol. Came in next day boots like a mirror loved looking better than NCO's. They always enjoyed stepping on em actually fun times. Sounds crazy as I think about it. Then the horrific disaster that shock the entire Army ACU's. Uniforms that fall apart, can't wear after one smoke session because grass stains. I was infantry ripped them constantly to the point I used 550 to hold the croch together on foot patrol. I got out before Multi Cam sigh. DCU's were awesome ! Looked cool lol 02-09

I went through basic in 1983. The Drills were not allowed to hit us, or even curse at us, then. The punishment was usually 10 pushups, or maybe a lot of additional PT. I think the hitting/hazing trainees ended after the Vietnam War.

Apparently in some units if a soldier deployed and came back to that unit. They wanted you to take off your combat patch, because they didnt want the new soldiers to be upset because they dont have a combat patch. And the qual on the range you have 3mags 1 20round mag and 2 10round mags you shot 20 at prone supported 10 prone unsupported and 10 from the kneeling

My college dorm was actually less equipped than my barracks. In the barracks, it was 2, sometimes 3 to a room, but we had our own bathroom and there was a convenience store PX within walking distance. Even the mess hall food was better. In college there was a community bathroom and you had to drive to the 7-11. But what made the college dorms better was we didn't feel like we were under constant supervision. We had to keep the dorms basically clean but not spotless. Nobody checked up on us unless there was an obvious issue. We had a damage check when we moved out but there weren't weekly inspections. We were treated like adults who could solve our own problems. If you got drunk or high (even before it was legal) you didn't have to worry about an NCO finding out. An RA might find you but his priority was making sure you got to your room safely, no judgment. At my first unit the "health & welfare" inspections were every day, not every week, and it was by the squad leader and platoon Sergeant. At my 2nd unit they were weekly but that's because to get to the barracks from the company area you had to walk up a steep hill and then climb 4 flights of stairs with no elevator and the NCOs couldn't be bothered - and when I moved to the NCO barracks we didn't even have that. Ignoring the steep walk the Private barracks were actually nicer than the NCO barracks because the NCOs had a community bathroom and no day room. But treatment is everything and the NCOs and college students were treated better than the Privates. It doesn't matter what amenities they give you if they still treat you like crap.

I think one of my biggest discouragements in the Army (91-93) was becoming nothing more than a go-fer or a scullion. I mean, to get tasked with such menial jobs every so often is fine. But when it becomes your full time “MOS”, it really makes one want to take the earliest exit ASAP. I didn’t even want to take the automatic promotion to E-4 because I didn’t see what I did to earn it.

I did 2 years juvenile detention (possesion of schedule 1 and 3 drugs "with Intent modifiers blah blah") and military service "preperation" was part of early release stipulations in the program i was in.. With no rotc or high school credits as far as i understood it. That upset me alot when i found out AFTER putting my name in but now that i am actually considering service at 25 i am so glad i volunteered as i am far more mature than i was at the time of serving my sentence. Funny enough its my friends who served who are trying to tell me not too and my family has been far more supportive than i thought. Any time i mention wanting to do it my friends say dont drink the koolaid. And my marine buddy who served 8 is super against me trying to go airborne, for some reason he really hates them and wont say why. Lol

My active duty was in the Marines and Army from 1975 to 1989 and then a National Guard deployment to the Middle East for a year in 2004 and reserve component training. I'm retired now and I probably won't be able to tolerate current conditions, definitely would have trouble with the Old School days if I were plugged in with my current body. The political climate in the military has changed. I got away with failure to manage my career. A careerist regards "doing what the job requires" as getting in the way of career progression. Today, failure to "manage your military career" means that your stint in the Army won't last more than ten years--if you are permitted to re-enlist. Even as a super soldier, today's military requires career management--ignore your career management and it will be a short one. I agree--things are different now. I cannot really tell if things are "easier" or more difficult. I've changed, too.

I'm glad the whole boot shining thing is no more. Why shine them up like you work in a executive's office only to be muddied, scuffed and all kinds of hades working in the field? Also, shiny boots sounds like a perfect attractor for enemy soldiers, much like the British Red Coats during the Revolutionary war.
