The wonderful thing about the A7CR (as opposed to the A7CII) is that the medium RAW is 26mp, and with the APSC mode also being 26mp (until very recently the largest ASPC available) you have a Full Frame 26MP camera AND an ASPC 26MP camera ... in the same camera. Plus the 26MP means youre not committed to the 61mp but it's there when you want or need it.

It would be great to see to what extend higher resolution can be leveraged to further cut the size of the system. For example, what is the image quality of lower resolution system with longer range zoom (e.g. A7C2 +24-105 at 105, uncropped) vs this, high resolution camera with a shorter zoom (e.g. A7CR + 24-70 at 70 mm cropped to match 105 mm the field of view). Additionally or alternatively, it would be interesting to see a comparison of high res. shots from a shorter prime like 50mm cropped to match the field of view of longer prime like 85mm with uncropped, lower res shots from 85mm.
@TheArtist44110 ай бұрын
You'd also lose a bit of bokeh with the shorter focal length lenses + cropping, similar to the APC vs FF calculation, multiplying the F-stop number with the crop factor. It's all trade offs!

@@davidrodgers5534 yes, yet the new gm lenses are actually quite compact if compared to the competition, regardless if third party or native. There is a good post /webpage you can find called : lenses to maximize the potential of the sony a7rv Check all the lenses in the "excellent" class and see which lenses are the most compact. Thing is: 50 f1.4 gm is almost the same image quality as yet significantly lighter and smaller. Primes significantly smaller than zooms, of course. Everything other than those gm primes or those huge af lenses offer significantly less image quality, especially wider open. The 40 2.5G for example is really good at F4 but if you want to use it at 2,5 count in really bad flaring and ghosting, a lot of chromatic aberrations, and weak corners. If that is good with you, use it. But there is no such thing as best / compact and cheap.

Great review Chris. A couple of other points. I have the a7RV, and a sneaky trick that works well, is the small and medium raw images. Both have great detail, and I use them both so much more than the full size raw images. But the trick is, when you are in medium, you can go to crop mode to get closer to your subject, but the resolution doesn’t drop again. Same in small. So you get two focal lengths (sort of) when shooting in these modes. I assume this camera would do the same being it has the same sensor. It’s a feature you wouldn’t think you’d need, until you have it, and now I find I use it often! Thanks again for your review. ✌️

Something that always bugged me about "digital teleconverter" in jpeg was the upscale to match the full resolution. Always wondered who would use that, why not just crop it and leave it? The raw croped picture would probably even be smaller in size than the upscale jpeg

@@GreenLightFlight You’ve missed the point. When you are shooting in medium (26 megapixel) and go into crop mode, because the sensor has so much more resolution, it doesn’t have to upscale it. It already has the resolution to spare. So the crop mode image is also 26megapixel. Also, not sure of your point around jpg. It works in raw. Thanks

It’s amazing how much this body style has evolved since the early days of the NEX series. A camera like this or the regular A7C is exactly what I hoped the NEX series would one day turn into when I used to use an NEX-7. I ended up getting an A7ii/iii (can’t remember now…) years ago that is still serving as a great primary camera but I always yearn for that rangefinder-style body. Maybe when Sony improves further on this series and adds the higher-quality viewfinder and second SD slot (I’m sure they can fit one somewhere…) I’ll finally pull the trigger and upgrade. The a5100 + A6XXX sensor compared to the A6700 has lower dynamic range, what you mostly observe during recovering highlights. Besides that the A6700 has around half a stop better ISO performance. To be honest, it's not much of a difference, but makes it a little bit easier to edit raw files. The AI chip however creates a lot more pleasing colors for jpg, however, still not on a level of Olympus. Then again, some might prefer the warmer, earthier and somewhat more muted tones of the A6700.

Please don’t test noise on sun day pictures..it must be done on night shots. Personally i think the price should be a little less. It is close to a7RV for professionals which has bigger evf, better screen and flip screen, full mechanical shutter, 1/8000, bigger grip, 8k24, dual card and faster dual compactflash card or dual sd card, better flash sync speed, a bit better stabilization, full hdmi connector. Sony must determine who is the target audience. Pro, hobbyst, fortune enthousiast, public? A pro would choose a7rV. People like me that have the a7c is because of the more affordable price and full frame combined in a small body. So it seems for fortune enthusiasts but the market is not so large. I would keep the a7cII at the price of the a7c, move the a7c to the price of a6700, then move the price of a7cR to the price of a7cII…and then it would sell a lot. I would lower the price of a7r5 with has not a fast sensor with low fps compared to a1 or a9 and even a7c has faster fps in both mech shutter and electronic. So i would down the price a bit to adjust better the target public.
