Hey, interesting fact : at 600mm on APS-C sensor is the only moment we can actualy read the brand on the cylinder lock "yale". So one can still find a use for this lens (quite cheap in 2021) on aps-c. thanks for this review it was usefull to me.

This is just one of your great reviews! Thanks a lot, Christopher. I got this lens a few weeks ago. On full frame camera, the results are just lovely. It is completely right that its sweet range for sharpness is between f/8 and f/11. But it depends on what you are shooting (since f/5 - f/6.3 aperture range is quite usable). Meanwhile it must be kept in mind that it is really a very-good-value lens for its price. (Note: Of course, it is not in league with lenses such as Canon EF 500mm or 600mm f/4L IS II USM where those lenses cost around 12.000 USD!)

Appreciate the work that goes into these reviews, just upgraded to a 70D and was thinking of pairing it with a the Tamron 150-600. I do some sports photography plus I like getting nature shots also so I always wanted to get something with big-big reach. Other reviews and of course the price got me really excited to get this lens but after seeing your review I'm having second thoughts. I guess the bottom line is that for the price it's still a great lens and to get a better one you're looking at ten times the price.

I bought this lens in November 2014 and I must tell you I love it! It's very stylish in my opinion, and for its size it is super light. The lens hood works very well and also offers great protection from rain, snow and even falls. I fell with it once, and the lens was saved because it landed on the front, with the hood protecting it. The image quality is quite sharp up to about 500mm. But like every lens there is several things I don't like about it. Just like the review says, the autofocus is slow at 600mm. It's not good in low light at all being a 5 to 6.3 lens. And finally, it does have a problem with lens creep if you hold it down while its zoomed in a little bit. But other than those things I highly recommend this lens!

Dear Chris, as always this has been a very helpful video in making up my mind about this particular lens..I am not going to buy it for my 7D mark ii..though initially I thought about this option for a while.. Currently I am shooting with the 18-135 mm STM and the 24 mm STM as well.. As per your earlier suggestion I looked at the 55-250 STM lens..and frankly I liked it so much that I was about to get the lens for myself but thought that may be I would wait a few days before that.. Now that I think of it, there is a particular lens that caught my attention..and that is the 70-300mm L lens from Canon.. There are not a lot of reviews for this lens out there but those that I saw gave a kind of mixed feeling about it.. So I would like to ask your opinion on making a decision. The 70-300 L lens is certainly not cheap and neither it has an impressive zoom range as the sigma 150-600 C lens or this tamron that you reviewed..but what is has is excellent build and image quality..or so I think.. That zoom range is impressive for portraits and landscapes as well as a bit of telephoto..and that too particularly on my camera..that is a well rounded walk around lens I suppose.. I would really like to get a L lens in my collection but also I won't mind being able to take a few closeups of birds.. So I would like to ask you for a review of the Canon 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 IS L lens if possible and also your opinion in making up my mind in buying a decent glass for my camera.. Thanks in advance for your help..

Hi Chris, nice video. I really wanted to buy this lens for bird photography. I use a Canon 7D (hoping to get 7D mk II at some point), so seeing in your review that it isn't that sharp on aps-c, i bought a Canon 300mm f/4L IS USM 1.4 extender. I'm really happy with the purchase, thank you for helping me decide.

I have 2nd version of this lens - the f/4.0-6.3 post-RF version - (got it for just $280 USD!!) and I'm using it on a Pentax K-70. I really do like this lens despite it weighing 2.5 times as much as the camera. The zoom is amazing and stopped down it's simply wonderful. It is a wonderful little (well... Not so little. Actually pretty big) lens. Now I just have to find a bag to carry the darned thing in! What bag do you use to haul your similarly sized lenses around, Chris?

Great review as always! That bunny is just adorable, by the by. Apparently the Canon EF 400mm F5.6L USM has superior sharpness to this Tamron lens, even if you crop the pictures to the equivalent of 600mm. Plus, the image quality is good enough to allow a teleconverter to be useful in conjunction with it. Of course, that's a prime lens, so you lose the zoom option. And, if you're filming then cropping a 400mm image to 600mm is not practical (because you'll be cropping from an image that is 1080x1920 pixels or less). Also, no IS on the Canon lens. So, for video the Tamron is better. But, I think I would prefer the canon prime lens, all things considered. The price is pretty similar.

@seminolecapt 10 жыл бұрын
However, cost is an issue. There are some interesting reviews online of the new Canon 100-400 with teleconverter vs. this Tamron. Not surprisingly, the Canon wins in IQ, autofocus time, etc., but the kit costs 2.5x as much. Will be interesting to to see how the new Sigma 150-600 C stacks up to this lens since they are priced identically.
@EdmontonRails
@EdmontonRails 6 жыл бұрын
I would take a 400mm F5.6 over this if it was an option for Nikon. I love my 150-600 but I have to use it more as a 150-450, beyond that it is soft and often back focuses.

Thanks for taking the time to review this lens Christopher, your reviews are always clear & concise. APS-C bodies seem to have a hard time with these super zoom lenses, have you come across any lenses 300mm & upwards that give decent sharpness on an APS-C body? Or must we crop-sensor users admit defeat and buy a 'full-frame' body if we want very good sharpness? It's a shame there aren't many long-tele lenses made to natively pair with the APS-C sensor EF-S mount body :-/
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 9 жыл бұрын
+Joe M It is tricky. The Tamron 70-300 VC USD performs quite well at 300mm on APS-C, and so does the Canon 400mm f/5.6 'L'

So I was considering buying this lens because I shoot a lot of raptors. But your review told me something about my camera that I didn't know. I have a Canon 20d and was always a little frustrated by my 75-300 Canon zoom appearing soft at 300mm. Now I know why. I didn't know about APS-C sensors when I purchased the camera years ago. But now I know that the Tamron 150-600mm would not work so well for me. Thanks for your review. Now I just need to get a better camera body first to take my photos to the next level.

In a way I think it is incorrect to compare the sharpness on a full frame @600mm, you should compare or rather note. That you are as zoomed in @375mm and that is were the sharpness comparisons is relivent. Any additional focal lenght comparisons is not super relivent. Thoughts? :)

Hello Chris Frost. I'd just like to say your reviews are great, and extremely helpful. I just have a quick question regarding lenses for a Canon Rebel t5i. I'm looking for a lens around the 18-55 range, (but larger or smaller zoom is fine), that ideally has a large aperture, but more importantly great sharpness and contrast and is good in low light. Pictures are my priority, not video. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks!

Nikon's don't have many options. Canon however has 400mm f5.6 which is light,faster and sharper even when you zoom into 600mm equivalent. Burst speed is only 4. Buffer sucks more so its not for wildlife.

Beautiful vid. I am confused or curious. Is it fully compatible w/ a NIKON D3200 ASPC? They say that the crop is 1.5X. This would make the full 600mm zoom, actually 900mm. Wouldn't that be the cause of the lack of clarity or detail? You are comparing a 900mm Crop Sensor lens to a 600mm Full Frame Sensor.
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 9 жыл бұрын
+Tim McQuade Take a look at the APS-C results in this video for a rough idea of how sharp it would be - but the D3200 is a 24mp camera, so it won't be quite as sharp. Yes, it would be a 900mm field of view

I'm going to throw this out there: I use a Sony a77 body, seen that you review lens that go towards a Canon or Nikon (i know Nikon uses Sony sensors) are there any details missing if i am to use your guides and reviews in selecting a future lens? I shouldn't see any problems, optics don't change, but, I'm new at this and maybe missing something... plus it's kind of hard to find information specific to Sony compatibility when everybody in the jungle hunts (more accurately: shoots) with Canons... :D

+Serg Asma As far as I know, a lens that is sharp on a 20mp Canon sensor will be virtually as sharp on a 20mp Nikon or Sony sensor. But, of course, it might look a bit softer if you're using a 24mp sensor, or higher.

I've had this lens since about 2014. It worked great until the autofocus motor stopped working for no apparent reason after being in stored in a Pelican case for a couple of years. Manual focus still works fine. So, it's okay now for relatively non-moving subjects, but not worth the cost of repair. Better options on the market now.

I can't remember exactly what I said in this video and I don't have time to look, but I was probably referring to Canon's very expensive 'L' lenses

How do you feel about image quality of this lens vs the Sigma 50-500 that you reviewed? Sharpness, contrast, etc.

Nice dude, I've been thinking of the Tamron or Sigma on my 70D and I think this has cleared up the Tamron side of things. Good vid.

I guess I'm confused - why does it perform so much worse optically speaking on an APS-C camera body?
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 5 жыл бұрын
Because the APS-C sensor is far more demanding of the lens - its pixel density is far smaller

I have a Sony A6600 and saw this lens being sold second hand but for a Sony A mount and had a few questions 01. Is it possible to mount this Tamron Sony A mount with an adapter to connect to my A6600 with the Sony E mount? 02. Will doing this affect the quality in any way? 03. It's selling second hand here in Europe for 700 euros. Is that worth the price in 2024? 04. I'm looking for a range upto 600 and was initially searching for a Sigma lens but it was nearly double this price and more, second hand. Is there a huge quality difference between the two? 05. If there isn't, why don't more people buy this lens and just get an adapter which is all together, still much cheaper than the Sigma 150-600 lenses or is there a reason there's such a big price difference Any help on any of these questions is super appreciated.

When the stabilization works in my lens I hear a slight knoking sound. Does this mean it's broken?

Do you have review of Tamron SP 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2? I heard it's better than the first generation.

With some good, bright, golden hour light, and close to the subject with the bg being far away, I get amazing pictures shooting at f/5, f5.6. and smaller apers. I've had mine for 6 years now and no new lenses have pulled me away from this one. The minor differences they offer aren't worth the cost and would barely be noticeable on the web. If I were a pro, I would get a loan for a super nice prime, f/4 600 and live with soar arms.

your reviews are always very thorough and I normaly stop by Chris Frost if I need info. IT would be Great thought if you could do a new full review og the new tamron 150-600 V2 Lens. And the Sigma 150-600 sport Lens. Maybe compare the 2 lenses as well in all aspects like billedet quality, features, optical performance in North FF and apsc. but anyway... thank you for your many good and thorough reviews.

Can't decide if to buy this Tamron or Sigma. would be amazing if you could make a Sigma 150-600MM review. i guess i won't be able to buy mine until you do. (not the sport version the C version). i trust only your reviews before i buy lenses :)

some say Sigma is sharper over all at 600MM and some say tamron is sharper then sigma in the center (small center).some say they are so close that 99% of the people can't see any difference. everybody say different thing. with all the reading i am all dizzy now :(. your reviews on the other hand are spot on. so i wondered.

I am an ameteur bird photographer and am planning to buy the nikon d7200 for birding. But im stuck on which lens to buy. Ive got 3 options.. 1. Buy the tamron sp 150 600mm lens 2. Buy the nikon 70 300mm lens with a good teleconverter. 3. Get a spotting scope. The reason for the confusion is i dont know which one will give me the best results..... if u r suggesting option 2 or 3 please tell which teleconverter or spotting scope i should use?? Thanks in advance. Regards.
