Yes, I want it with IS at 300 USD! But today there isn't any Yongnuo zoom lens (just primes). I think they need to start with a "easy" 70-300 F4-5.6 without IS and then they need to improve (years) in order to reach sometihing similar to the 70-200 F2.8 IS. I bought the first version of the 50 mm and the 35 mm, they just weren't good enough for my full frame.

Youngnuo should capitalize on the Mirrorless market where lenses like these can offer Mirrorless users more choices and variety.
@TWX11385 жыл бұрын
@@LuLeBe Canon has two mirrorless lines that can use the protocols used for EF lenses. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Just as long as they make purpose-built mirrorless lenses, where the lens can be tiny and tuck right up against the shutter. If they just add integral spacer barrels to DSLR lenses then there's no point in putting an RF or EFM mount on, I would just get the EF version and use my own adapter. If I have to carry something the size of a DSLR lens I may as well be able to use it on my DSLR as well.

I have this as a Canon EF version and tried using it on my R6ii with EF-R adaptor and it just hunts like crazy and ended up freezing the R6ii. Christopher, could you maybe contact whoever your YN rep is and ask if they can maybe do a firmware fix for this, if it is indeed the lens's fault. Thanks
@jabezhane5 жыл бұрын
I picked this lens up on Ebay for £100 a few months ago. It certainly feels value for money. I updated the firmware on it too. I also tested the focussing (using a tripod and one of those focus scale things) and found it was slightly out so was able to adjust it on my 6D which improved things even further. I'd still like to get the revised Canon 50mm STM as I like to have a small light lens or two for parties etc. but I'd probably get more use from the 40mm pancake second-hand. I like using this lens to explain the 'wonder of bokeh' to people. A quick head shot at F1.4 and then F8.0 gets a "Ohhhh I see what you mean now!".

I bought this lens for around 120$, used but in perfect condition and I'm surprised how good is it. It is MUCH better that Canon 50 1.4 USM which I owned for many years before I switched to 50 STM. YN at 1.4 is fully acceptable for most situation while Canon 50 1.4 USM was't becouse of lack of contrast and disgusting purple fringe. It's quite heavy and solid built lens. Gives nice smooth bokeh. In this price range it is very good choice if you want to have usable 1.4 aperture. If you don't mind 1.4 go for Canon 50 f1.8 STM which is plasticy but a bit cheaper and have better AF in terms of speed and it is also very silent.
@A.A19955 жыл бұрын
That Yongnuo suprised me. We have trained eyes as photographers but I bet clients wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and the 50mm art from Sigma when you show them your final work after post production. Buying it used would probably set you back 120 dollars or something.. it'll be an absolute steal for an F1.4 AF lens. Though it would probably make me feel bad for putting a 'cheap lens' in front of a full frame sensor.

This came out of nowhere! Happy to see an actually affordable f/1.4 lens. I’ve never thought about buying the Canon 50 1.4, many reviews showed it is not the sharpest lens (especially on crop sensors) and it’s getting quite old now; I really hope Canon brings a new one out soon! BWT, great job from Yongnuo. If it had got better AF I’d buy it eyes closed

If you buy it from Amazon, you'll have two years of warranty in Europe (don't know about UK now) and they'll replace it if it suddenly stops working or has an isse not caused by accidental damage. I don't know if they can repair it, but for the price you're paying you'll probably be better off buying a new one
@klemmfixer3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the review! Bought the Nikon version based on your recommendation and was pleasantly surprised. Focus is spot on most of the time (no AF finetune necessary either on my copy), center sharpness is more than useable wide open (probably better than the old Nikkor screwdriver) and razor sharp starting at F1.8. Wish the bokeh had a little more character compared to vintage glass, but that's modern optical formulas for you, I suppose?

Interesting! One of the problems with Canons 1.4 lens, as well as the 1.8 (especially) is the slightly nervous bokeh, especially with specular highlights. The Youngnuo seems to be clearly better in that respect, which is enough for me to choose it over the Canon, even disregarding price. Fortunately for me I have the EF 50mm f/1.2L, so I won't have to make that choice, but I will recommend that my brother take a look at this review, since this might be a great lens for him. Thanks for a great review, as always!

One of my biggest gripes about camera manufacturers was the lack of a micro USB port that could be used to power or charge the battery. Especially when most people carry around a power bank. Instead you had to buy an expensive replacement battery, an expensive charger or buy an battery dummy. To make things worse, the cheaper point and shoot cameras have that feature and the more expensive ones don't. Manufacturers are slowly implementing this feature but it's too slow and too late because they want people to buy their overpriced batteries. No wonder people buy cheap batteries from eBay.
@Hexsense6 жыл бұрын
Sony A7 series can do that. Some of their first few can only charge when the camera is turned off. Newer models are now usable while charging from USB port.
@stevess77776 жыл бұрын
I actually disagree with that. Your camera already comes with a charger, and while spare batteries cost 60$ at most, there are some very good clones for 10-12$ a pack, I speak this from owning several LP-E6 wasabi batteries. Also, what's the point of charging a camera while not being able to use it?
@stefanoferrari59376 жыл бұрын
Steve, latest canon cameras use the LP-E17, which have an encrypted chip in it. The camera won't recognise third party batteries so you won't be able to read the battery level and sometimes the camera also "reject" the battery and doesn't even turn on. Being able to recharge the camera with a powerbank would be a huge saving for the consumers.

Dayum I'm looking for fast fifty for my Canon RP (and settled firmly to use EF lenses for a few reasons), and reached the conclusion to purchase the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. Until I found this video. Sure it's more expensive but it's quite unbelievable tbh. So I knew the Yongnuo f/1.8 is worse than Canon's, but definitely understandable considering the price. But this f/1.4 league is the complete opposite. The 25% price increase (from Canon 1.8 to Yongnuo 1.4) is worth it. Glad I found this video.

Great review, Chris! Finally someone showing Canon how much they need to update their 50mm lenses. Not just the 1.4. For casual shooting I love the colors from the 1.8's, but the smearing of contrasting edges that Canon's 50's exhibit until f3.2 is simply making them useless for me. I know some say that it's just contrast and it can be fixed in post, but first of all, it's not just contrast, and second of all, I don't wanna have to rescue each and every photo I take at the wide apertures. I'm really allergic to that smearing. I'm adapting Canon glass to my A7III (as well as using native lenses of course) and since the 1.8's don't work well in continuous-af, I had to sell mine and get a 1.4 instead. That works like a charm adapted, but still there's this smearing wide open and even stopped down a bit, and I kept taking it off the camera and put on my Sigma 50 Art. I don't wanna drag that heavy lens around for casual shooting, so now I've sold the Canon 50/1.4, and I'm getting this Yongnuo. I'm always shooting at wider apertures when it's in natural light, and the Canon is only winning (with my preferences) from about f4 and up. I prefer 85mm for the "pretty" portraits, 50mm for slightly edgier portraits when going in tighter, 35 for it's wider view, and 24 for it's edgier wider view ... but I don't have a 35 and a 24 right now. So maybe I should buy the Yongnuo for the money I got from the Canon, sell the Sigma 50 Art and buy the Samyang 35 and 24 for that money? I would lose the awesome quality of the Sigma, but I would gain a more complete kit. (I have the 85/1.8 and also a 70-200/2.8.) In the future I could then get the FE 55/1.8 and get back the awesome quality and still keep the Yongnuo for the 1.4 when I need that.
@christopherfrost6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, up to you really, I'd slightly prefer the more complete kit myself :-)

@@christopherfrost Yes, I think that's the way to go too. Did you by any chance check how it worked with AF-C on your A7II? I'd seen your video before, but rewatching it now that I have a Canon 50mm f/1.8 Mk.I, I'm not really seeing any reason to upgrade to any affordable f/1.4 models for a 24MP camera. They simply don't perform well enough at f/1.4 for me to justify the purchase, especially when 50mm is already a bit long on a crop camera. The extra light isn't worth it if the quality at that aperture is poor enough to call for stopping-down to an aperture no better than the f/1.8 achieves.

I had plan to buy canon 50mm f1.8 lens but after watching this video, I just bought this lens at 169 usd from ebay and its shipping is also free.

Not great for video with sound if the autofocus is noisy. Noisy continuous auto focus is typical with non STM CANON lenses.

so is this pretty worthless on apsc if u want to go 1.4? also. i already own a sigma 18-35mm 1.8. would you personally give this lens a miss if you owned the sigma?

The first Yongnuo lens worth considering buying. Thanks a lot. I wonder what lenses will they clone next.
@martinzhang55336 жыл бұрын
This is not a clone, it is an all new formula, with an concave element in the front.

This is not a clone. I am a little bit angry, sounds like all chinese just know how to copy.

Guys in my opinion it's a clone or copy of I think discontinued Canon 50 mm 1.4. The same story with other YN lenses so far. I don't mean it's bad, As I wrote this lens is definitely worth considering buying and I don't really care if it's clone or not. Cheers.

It appears to have a bayonet mount for a lens hood. Which lens hood will fit this lens?

do you think this is worth the buy if you already have canon 50mm 1.8 STM?
@christopherfrost6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, not really, unless you really want that f/1.4 aperture

What’s with the bokeh? Is it 'better ‘ than the Canon one?
@christopherfrost6 жыл бұрын
Yup, IMO

I have this yongnuo and canon 50mm stm. Compare to Canon, I think yongnuo overall has better bokeh, contrast, saturation, flare characteristic, and sharpness, but another side it has lower AF accuracy, consistency, speed and AF sound is little too loud i think. Except you mount it on Sony bodies + sigma mc-11/viltrox adapter.
