"A critique of your work is not a critique of you". I definitely wish someone told me that as I was starting out because it's a tough one to unlearn.

I knew that my animation major wasn’t going to be what I imagined, but it still disappointed me so much. The teachers revolve conflicts by saying “your classmates are like your family”, I get blatantly rude and racist remarks thrown at me all the time in my own group, and the school treated mental health like a joke. Most students don’t care anything about fundamentals, so doing project with kids who knew nothing about basic anatomy was horrendously bad. Maybe expecting to make some genuine new friends with a whole class of socially inept kids just doesn’t work out. Dropped out and went to a much better school, but I’m now studying literature instead and drawing in my own time.

I can agree with everything in this video! So many people in my college classes just do what teachers tell them but never ask why we do the things we do, and because in college you don't learn to draw but rather refine the knowledge of concept they don't know how to draw very well, and i'm in a school where we are doing 3d animation! Also yeah anime isn't trash but it does twist lots of rules of human anatomy and people don't really learn how things work and only have a very specific and very limited knowledge of drawing basic things

yoooo, this hits so hard. even though i signed up for art school sort of "knowing" what was coming, nothing could ever really prepare me for the emotional ride, because as an artist, you are so deeply connected to your work (or for me at least haha) its hard to to distinguish the fine line between work (industry expectations) and passion (personal development). i started off from ground zero doing abstract stuff to enrolling in a high demand 3 year concept art/illustration course, because i wanted to learn how to draw! i knew i had ideas, but i didnt know how to express them. but of course that isnt the only thing you have to learn along the way, theres professional practices, theories to ingrain in your brain and routines to keep up. while i do not inherently regret my choice, speedrunning through the whole process led me spiralling down a massive burnout on my mental health. exactly like you said, we have to be critical and really set our own direction apart from what we learn academically in school in order to sustain ourselves as artists post graduation, and im just slowly starting to realise and accept that. now i see art school more of like a stepping stone and a place where you really start to build your connections and be familiar with the industry. glad more and more people in the art community are speaking up about things like these! its really comforting to have artists backing each other up

I'm a sophomore, not going into an art school, but I am very passionate about art and I want to grow in my creative potential. Even though I'm not looking to pursue art seriously as any sort of career, the advice in this video seriously makes sense. It's not just applicable to art but it has actually helped me think about life in general and how I want to go about interacting with my friends and people I meet. Idk what exactly the point of this comment is but this video was great. Thank you for making it! (Also the sketches were super entertaining to watch.)

Try tracing paper or marker paper over photocopies of your favorite mechs on a light table. This technique helps familiarize the hand-mind with the style of the art. Practice repeating the tracing a few times, then draw them freehand also multiple times. At this stage you can add your own variations to the art. As the saying goes 'if you want to do great art, first imitate great artists'.

I remember I took a class, human ecology I think, and our final was a group presentation. Can’t remember what it was about, but 3 of our 5 members didn’t show until the last half of class, and by the time they showed, the other group member who did show and I were wrapping up the presentation. The other 3 ended up getting no credit. They were also chewed out in front of the entire class. Didn’t even have an excuse. Lot of stupid people in that class though.

basically all the things you said, especially about being respectful and learning to handle criticism, reflect my own experience even though i did not attend art school but only make art as a hobby. one piece of advice to my past (and also present lol) self is to do the thing art school presupposes: show your art to people! you‘ll only improve and refine your vision if you let other people experience it and then do your best to critically reflect that reaction yourself without being butthurt. the part about accepting art as an actual craft which needs to be learned and improved also resonates with me - only watching videos like yours won‘t make me better without acting on the advice given in them even though i could do that all day long :o) i‘ve been wanting to build/join a small community of likeminded artsy people willing to create together and critique each other for so long, but i don‘t know where to start and i feel like that dream has become harder to schieve due to covid :/ anyway, thanks for another great video! i really like the down-to-earth, relaxing vibe you and your content give off as well as your subtle use of humour - all the best and stay safe ^^

Hello. This is the reason that I didn't take teachers too serious. I got a few that didn't want to help me when I asked questions. So I did all that I could by reading about what I wanted to learn. Afterwards as the years passed by I went on to taking correspondence courses. I completed my educational goals without the help of anyone. I don't like school, and this is the reason why. I have a learning disability, but I'm not dumb I just can't remember things. Once I practice everything it becomes easier. I learned Art, Music Production, Photography, and Writing on my own. Among other things it took years to learn with practice. I understand what you said about teachers. Enjoy your day.

The educational style in many places relies on learning a thing once. But, as I understand it in Japan and possibly a few other places they practice repetition a lot until the lesson is stuck in your mind for sure. This is a different style of teaching, and probably a greatly superior one.

I'm going to a public school because i cant afford art school. I AM good at art at a level above a lot of my peers, more so than would be true at an art school. I fear this isn't worth my time, but can't compare it to private art school to actually know. I guess I have to accept it how it is and put in the work behind closed doors to learn "industry secrets" and NETWORK so people know me and my stuff..
@latteamericano3767
@latteamericano3767 3 жыл бұрын
you can still put your work out there regardless of your school, social media is your best friend/bet! sounds really cringey but taking the first step to putting your work out there will slowly but surely help tons in building your right audience and making friends! industry secrets really isnt as behind closed doors as it seems, a lot of it is experience coming from different kinds of works and clients. it may seem really daunting at first so its totally alright to take it slow, start with making connections with people who are likeminded and in a same direction as you and everything else will follow :) wishing you the best

This is all great advice, but I would disagree with the 'common sense' approach to critiques, which says it's not an attack or a personal attack. It IS an attack! But, it's a unique and SPECIAL (all caps for emphasis) kind of attack one should only experience in creative education settings. Just like in role-playing games, where players and enemies have 'special attacks', so in arts, performance, creative writing, music education, etc. the critique is an attack designed to strengthen and define skills and put the student's 'usual way' of doing things in a larger perspective. Just as in martial arts training, the dojo trains the student by- quite literally- attacking the student! It may be done initially in a slow and gentle manner, but not always, depending on the teacher. It is not the fact a critique is an attack that needs to be challenged. It is instead the student's attitude towards and ability to adapt to specialized attacks that must be modified. Students in creative coursework must have their minds prepared- in advance- for both the critique and the harsh feelings that may emerge from being 'picked-at' by the instructor and the other students. This has been called in other contexts 'rough play', and in the world of creative endeavor it is no different. Training of the mind for advancement in one's chosen field of employment determines successful results as much as skill, knowledge, talent, genius, insight and intuition ever have.
