Since your hooking this up to your receiver you should consider using the optical audio input. It is also in the back of the receiver so it is nicely tucked away.

At a Christmas party last night a friend showed me his SONOS, controlling speakers in each room in his ceiling. This looks like it would basically do the same thing, as you said you can have multiple Chromecast's in a house, each feeding a separate receiver or pre-amp. Now that I think about it though, what about volume control? Just leave the main on the receiver turned up and turn down the Chromecast's output?

I was using Sonos at my mother-in-laws house over xmas and really liked it but I wanted something to work with my existing stereo. The Sonos Connect is $399! I opted for the Google Chromecast at $45 (CAD). Nearly 10x cheaper.

Tim, I see in this video that the device was used to cast audio to the player instead of the speakers directly. This can also be done using the Yamaha app once the A/V receiver is connected to your home network. I was expecting the A/V receiver to output the sound wirelessly to the speakers using this device. Can that be accomplished?

best thing to do is connect the chromecast audio via optical and use the on board dacs in your AV receiver, I imagine they will be better quality

Tim - I have an important question for you on this device. I have a grand piano that has a player system installed on it called PianoDisc. Originally it just used CDs to operate the system. I have since added a old Sansa MP3 Player to it that is connected via a 3.5mm jack and it works great. (I rarely use the CD format anymore). I was thinking of buying a Bluetooth receiver to make the operation "wireless". But of course my phone or tablet would have to be within about 30 feet at all time that the piano is playing for it to work. My question is - will this device fling the MP3 music files I have stored on my Android phone or tablet to the Chromecast Audio? And thank you for your video. EXCELLENT and well done. No... Anything you play on it, has to be "from the internet"... It can't be from a source locally on your device or anyone's... Even if you hav6an established connection......... It HAS to be from the internet.

Did you try this with Plex ? I want something to stream audio to my gf radio while streaming movies on my hd from my house. This would also be awesome for powered studio monitors if you had a trs to two ts jacks. That would make an great stereo experience.

I have some kind of stereo in every room. Now for $30 bucks a room I can listen to same music through the house. WIFI stays connected to multiple units unlike bluetooth that were line of site and limited to only 1 or 2 units connected at same time. And its way cheaper than any alternative. For those that don't understand the 3.5 outlet supports toslink you just need to add a mini adapter to a regular toslink if you don't have a mini on one side, I had 4 adapters that came with mine laying around the house.

I know you asked this 8 months ago, but yes it is an option now. Create a group and select all devices you'd like added to that group (can include other google home devices as well) and it will cast to all simultaneously.

Tim, you didn´t show where you connect in Yamaha Receiver but I imagine that is "Aux" entrance. My question is: Would it work if you put in "Mic" entrance? (because my receiver has not this "Aux").

You are using an av receiver for this test,but the standard chromecast with Hdmi sounds a lot better with av receivers.

I have a TV in my room, and I would like to connect speakers so that they are next to my bed which is in front of the TV, I don't want to use wires to connect TV to the speakers, can I use this to cast the sound from TV to the speakers ? or only from mobile to speakers ?

Hey Tim, thank you for the video - a quick question: I use a MacBook Air to stream all my KZbin videos and Spotify music. For KZbin, I use an HDMI connection straight into my TV. All audio goes out of the headphone jack on the MacBook via a stereo RCA Y-cable into the line-in on my receiver which feeds my speakers. Keeping my current setup for video (HDMI into TV), would I be able to utilize Chromecast to go digital audio via optical out into my receiver? Thank you for your time and attention.

Hey Tim, so i just had a quick question. I notice at the end of the video you say the thing about hoping they will sync video and audio, but is this not possible yet? I was a bit confused because as per your demonstration, the youtube video played on your phone with the sound on the speakers so it seemed that worked. Also, couldn't you put it to the "play screen audio" mode and then just simply use netflix on your phone to have the audio play out of the speakers and watch from your phone? I'm also considering the implications of this from a laptop. If I connect this to my laptop, with my laptop plugged into my TV and I'm streaming netflix or watching a video on VLC, is there a way to play the screen sound on the laptop through my desktop speakers as I watch the movie? This would be the only reason I would want this device so thanks for your help!

Hi Tim, could you tell me roughly how long it takes to 'boot up' the chromecast audio ( once its all been setup of course ) I have a bathroom audio setup currently running a bluetooth adapter, so when the bathroom light is on it gets power and you can pair to it and stream music to the bathroom, This chromecast audio is what i've been waiting for as it no longer confines you to that space, but one thing i like about the bluetooth adapter is its immediately powered. i've already ordered a chromecast audio but would appreciate a boot up time, as in how long it takes from switching the wall power on until it shows a cast symbol on your device? many thanks

I'm a bit confused, because when I did the setup on the Chromecast devices, I never had to change my wireless settings on my phone or tablet. I just went through setup in the Chromecast app with Bluetooth turned on. My phone and tablet connected to the Chromecast devices via Bluetooth, performed the setup, and was up and running. This was like a week ago so maybe this was simplified?

Hi, I have one question about the "Cast screen / audio" feature at about 4:00 into the video: does it send ALL of the phone's audio to Chromecast Audio, including system sounds like keyboard clicks, notification sounds, alarms, phone calls, etc. or just the audio from apps?

Excellent review! 2 questions - did you say that you can stream KZbin audio to the stereo, by mirroring? I understand you can't sync the video on the phone with the audio on the stereo, (altho that would be nice... ). Q.2, can you stream a station that broadcasts over the intenet, such as WWOZ , or SugarIntheGourd ?

I set up exactly as you did with the 3.5 jack plugged into a size adapter. The AUX input is larger than the 3.5mm cord in the box.. So, I got that plugged in, I checked the connections, volume and power. I got as far as the sound test but there is no sound. I can't get any further than that.. Any suggestions? I was very psyched to get Chromecast Audio. The set-up on the original Chromecast was so easy. I didn't expect to run into problems. Thanks, I appreciate the help.

Hi, Tim! I do have the Chromecast II but I could not use the Home theater Philips together. To make it clear, I do conect videos from Netflix from my smartphone to the my LED Philips TV (not a Smart one) but could not use the Home theater nice sound system altogether. The only sound comes from the TV ( basic one). Did I miss something? ( Chromecast Audio would not change that,correct?)

Can you stream directly from your phone to the chromecast audio without being connected to a home wifi?

It's supposed to be a line level signal, but you can still control volume through it. Do you have any input on how this is achieved? I want my expensive amplifier to do the work, not the one in a 35USD item.

Hey i have a question I am playing a dj set outside in the backyard, hooked up to a speaker. I want the same music to play inside on a speaker. If I got two of these chromecast audios, could I simply connect one of them to the outdoor speaker, the second to the indoor speaker, then they will recognize eachother, then I could transmit inside? Two questions: 1. Do you need any other Chromecast device for this to work? 2. Is there a way to use this (maybe in conjunction with Home) to play music from playlists on your PC? -- My PC is in my room and wired from there out to my livingroom into my 4k OLED TV (used as a monitor) with a Klipsch soundbar on the wall. So, if I plugged the CC audio into my soundbar, is there a way to maybe use Google Home to direct it to play any of my Winamp playlists? (I don't have Google Play playlists or whatever) I'm guessing the answer is no. =(

Do you know if Google Chromecast audio can control the volume of the output using voice command with Google home? For example, I attach the Google Chromecast audio to my stereo receiver. Then I give a voice command to my Google Home to play music. Then I give a voice command to my Google Home to set the volume to 50%. Will that work? ... Or can I only adjust the volume manually with my phone volume buttons or the receiver remote? Thank you for making this video

+Rohit kumar You could just buy a HDMI to analog converter, and use the regular chromecast for audio purposes... Also, I dont think the chromecast audio is like a regular chromecast. The protocol, while similar, isn't exactly the same. It doesn't have video, therefore, it uses less bandwidth. Apps that support the regular chromecast dont support the chromecast audio. Only audio apps do. Also, the regular chromecast doesn't have a DAC (digital to analog converter) because it doesn't need one, and the chromecast audio also has built in optical (though you need to buy the adapter to utilize it). Also, google plans to add features to this device, such as multi-room casting, something not possible or even necessary with the regular chromecast. Either do the HDMI converter thing or just buy a chromecast audio. Personally, I'd recommend just getting the chromecast audio, since then you dont need to disconnect the device and plug it to speakers everytime you want to use it for music. Just saying.

Spotify yes, KZbin yes, phone call audio, no. Even when casting the screen/audio on an Android phone via the Chromecast app, when I make and receive calls, the audio and ringing is not heard through the Chromecast and it's attached speakers/television. This is demonstrated in Google's Chromecast product videos of a lady dancing to music playing from her Chromecast and she receives a call, the music continuing to play uninterrupted as she answers the call. Unlike Bluetooth, the Chromecast isn't continually paired to the mobile device. Once an action is performed in a compatible app such as selecting a video in KZbin or Netflix or selecting a song in Google Music, the content is streamed from the Internet, which is why you could actually turn off the mobile device/put it in airplane mode, and the content is still streamed uninterrupted.

Mine was detected in my WiFi settings on my phone, but it said it was out of range for some reason. I had to download the "Google Home" app and then I was able to cast to the Chromecast Audio. So either mine is different, or you failed to mention downloading the app. The only issue I have now is the music isn't as loud as it was when I could cast directly to my A/V unit (which quit working for some reason) I have to turn my A/V Unit up louder than normal to get the same volume as I do for other components. Guess I can live with this, (unless someone has a solution) better than it not working at all.

I need to make an arrangement to play normal mp3 and video files stored in my hard drive in my 2.1 speakers. At the same time i want to connect the chromecast audio to the same 2.1 speaker. to play music wirelessly. I want to avoid connecting and disconnecting the chromecast and laptop audio connection from the 2.1 speaker physically . Any arrangement that will take input from both as required ( laptop wired and chromecast audio)? Will a Y cable work for this?

ANANDA SHANKAR DAS isn't there any web page that can stream the music that's on your computer, then you can use chrome browser and play your music from there and use chromecast for pc as well.

Oddly enough, you and I have the same receiver so I figured you could test this for me. Can the device be powered using the USB front jack and still play audio through the aux port? Or does it have to be plugged into an outlet?
