Android Authority ***** How are you doing a review or tips and tricks video but your giving out bad information? You can stream content directly from your phone. That's what the update to Google Play Movies and Tv was for, it gave chromecast support. Movies and Tv shows that are stored on your phone or tablet can be streamed to chromecast. You wasted your money buying that piece of crap A/V splitter. If you wanted your surround sound to work all you needed to do was run a FireWire or the red and white composite cables from the audio out on your tv to your surround receiver. This guy has no idea what he's doing, stick to phones. Where's the dislike button when you need it...

Chromecast is the small stick you put in to your TV's HDMI slot. It allows you to play KZbin, netflix, Google movies, music etc to your TV and you can use your phone/tablet as a control for it. Using a laptop you can do all that, as well as actually put a tab on your TV, or (beta) your entire desktop wirelessly.

The way the phone streaming works currently is as follows: If your movie is on Netflix, KZbin or on Google play movies hosting, than you can tell the chromecast to play it. You can't send local content on your phone to the chromecast yet. With a laptop, as seen in the video you can send local content as long as chrome understands how to view it,Use the VLC extension for chrome which makes chrome use the VLC player as it's video player.

Yep. In fact multiple people can control it at once, an example of this is the KZbin support. Multiple people can add video's to a single Que for chromecast to play :)

If you can buy it, it will work. The actual device it self currently is limited to US sale locations, however it's usage is not.

It's coming, if I'm not mistaken. The developers have access to some sample apps for Chromecast, and one of them is a Tic Tac Toe game. Pretty basic, but it shows some potential. Would be great for card games and "with friends."

Wireless. Quick Streaming. Mobile/Tablet device streaming, and with your laptop too, it means your PC/phone/Tablet doesn't have to render the video when you use Netflix, Google play: Movie & music and of course youtube. You can set it up to allow multiple people to add to aa que on youtube from there own devices, good when your with friends since anyone with an IOS/Android etc can use this feature.

Another possibility for directing your sound to a receiver/speaker box is to use a $2 headphone splitter to go from a output headphone jack to an RCA jack. Some TVs also come with an output in RCA to do this for you, but not all... and some TVs may not have a headphone jack, but many do.

Chrome has a VLC extension you can get from the chrome web store which makes chrome play video content from your PC using the VLC player embed.

The hdmi audio splitting is genius. Cuz that was the first gripe i had with this, even when i plug the chromecast directly into my Av receiver, the audio is ignored by my old receiver and passed to the shitty tv speakers.

My desktop computer sat less than 5 feet from my 47" hd tv and my graphics card had two dvi out ports. I used one for my monitor and one for my tv which was used as a second monitor. Then I would bring up an app like Netflix, start a movie in a "new window", then drag that window from monitor 1 to monitor 2 (the tv) and watch it on my full screen hd tv. I could then keep doing things on my computer as I watch Netflix on my TV.

Open spotify webplayer and you can use the Chromecast tab feature to play spotify. The API is out for dev's to use, so I don't think it will be long for them to integrate it in to there mobile app.

Easier way to play local video from a tab is to simply press Ctrl+O and then select your file. The browser tab will start playing, and you just need to click the cast button after that. If you dont want to see the mirrored footage on your screen as you watch, just fullscreen the video, then press the windows button and then the "show desktop" button. It allows you to stay in fullscreen but not have the video showing on desktop as well as TV. Enjoy.

When I was told about the chromecast it was supposed to play anything. By the time I got it the 3rd party app that truly works was disabled. So as of right now the only thing it does that I can really use is it does youtube playlist. This is great for putting on animal planet clips for my dogs. Not much else.

I believe the ability to turn on the TV and switch inputs is part of the HDMI CEC standard - it's not directly tied to HDMI 1.4.

If you have Play Music (And I mean the service, not just the app) than you can upload your music to Google. You can upload up to 20,000 songs, but as of right now you can't send /Local/ aka music that's not on google music, to chromecast.

You can't control your PS3 with a mobile phone/tablet. Nor can you have it stream your Google content too it. Yes your PS3 can do netflix and KZbin, as well as local content. However I think with this good adoption of the product, as well as it's price point, more and more content providers are going to support it due to it's easy to use API. (Plus the Chrome Tab/Desktop is pretty nice since it's wireless ;) )

Good info. Thanks. I also have Roku 3 here in Canada which is slick. Chromecast is not yet available for sale in Canada as of my message today, but coming soon. Of course it can be ordered thru Amazon and shipped from the U.S. but I'd rather wait for BestBuy to have it here in country for the convenience of easier warranty/replacement. I love mu Roku 3 but I have a customer support service here in Ontario for these new devices so I have to have one of each to play with and support. Thanks again.

It doesn't actually stream it from your tablet to the chromecast. It tells Chromecast what you want to watch and than it grabs it from Netflix it self, meaning as soon as you have pressed that cast button, your tablet is no longer downloading the video, and you can use it for anything else like normal :)

If you have Google Music than your music that's on your phone may actually already be uploaded to Google music. If not than look up on Google how to get Google music, and upload your music. They give you storage for 20,000 songs.

When playing local videos, does it really depend on your internet connection? I think it is more like a local network connection between your laptop and the Chromecast. Since they are on the same network, it would make more sense than sending the video to Google servers and receiving it on the other end.

Disregard EVERYTHING in this video. This is from 2013. Since then Chromecast has been updated SEVERAL times. You now CAN stream media to you Chromecast from your Tablet. Such as flash video from websites via Chrome internet browser. ect ect.... Search more current info on the chromecast for everything it can do. (which is A LOT now.)
