Chromosomes duplicate during cell division to ensure each daughter cell receives a complete set of genetic material. This occurs in the S phase of the cell cycle, before mitosis or meiosis. In mitosis, duplication ensures that each new somatic cell has the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell, maintaining genetic consistency. In meiosis, chromosomes also duplicate to provide the correct amount of DNA to the resulting gametes, despite the two rounds of division. Without duplication, cells would inherit incomplete genetic information, leading to errors, malfunction, or cell death. This process is essential for growth, repair, and reproduction.
