Chronicles of Elyria - Retrospective of A Missing MMORPG - 8 Million Dollars Funded

Chronicles of Elyria is a topic that I've covered probably 16 times at this stage over the last 2 years. It's really the gift that keeps on giving, unless you're one of the people who spent thousands of dollars on it since you likely will never see a return on that investment. The developer is currently being taken to court, a class action lawsuit in the making and Soulbound Studios has stepped up the theatre. To me this is blatant smoke and mirrors to try and make it seem as if they're still working on delivering the game just for legal purposes. I could be wrong but either way, this is my coverage of the most recent news posted on their website. It's long, it's dry....And I'm going in.

Game dev for 10 years here. None of what they say makes sense, converting from typescript to C# is a complete rewrite (if they're using typescript on the server than they're using headless unity which is basically prebuilt and not overly complex). There is no game here, the lighting is barely more than default settings, the art assets are clearly unmodified assets (NOT game ready). Volumetric fog is NOT something you work on during beta, thats ridiculous. Even the art team wouldn't be touching that yet. I'm barely aware of who these people are but this all looks like the work of maybe 2 or 3 people (at most) and people that aren't particularly well versed in modern game dev.

It does seem their priorities are all completely backwards, doesn't it? The sensible thing would be to get the core game working properly, with a small starter area that also establishes the overall art style. THEN start expanding and adding features. That way you always at least have something playable, and if a feature doesn't make the deadline, it can always be added later, same with new content. To be fussing over whether your fog is good enough, or if NPCs have AI to be motivated to forage for food, before there's even a playable game, seems ridiculous. It's a definite case of putting the cart before the horse - in fact worrying about the type of seats on the cart before you even HAVE a horse.

Backend dev here. If they're truly using a microservice architecture as they say, they could port one service from TS to C# at a time while still working on the game. And that is only for backend stuff, they could still work on the client code itself.

Was it possible that the fog had the mission of hiding the game? GTA SA kinda did this. The game took a while to render distant objects but with a fog this was less perceptible, and the fog also gave the impression of a larger world by hiding distant parts from the player.

It's a well-known obfuscation tactic used to beguile a portion of the public. Lots of people who aren't that technically minded or familiar with business 'speak' may think that these charlatans know what they are doing because of how this is being worded. But anyone with a modicum of common sense can tell that it's just a smokescreen. I used to have a colleague who did fk all work, did great pie charts and progress reports though....... Got away with blagging for about 8 months before people realised he was doing no work. People like this just move from job to job doing the same thing - same as this guy by the looks of it 😂

He can't "deliver the expected game". He never could. It's absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to make a game like that with only $1 million (the og crowdfunding). So he always knew he was never going to make "the expected game". But...he now has a lawsuit in his hands. So he needs to provide something to try to avoid it. He's not going to be able to achieve his goal though. Best case scenario he makes _something that resembles CoE_...and ppl will sue him for false advertising and delivering a crappy game. Worst case scenario he makes nothing...and he gets sued for scamming all the backers. He's in a lose-lose situation now. He should've gone to some far away country with all the scammed money to start a new life or something. Counting legal fees, refunds, etc. once this is all over he'll end up losing much more than $8 million. This is as dumb as it gets.

CoE is the most blatant example of a total scam in this genre, but I think it's fair to ask at this point what crowd-funded MMOs have actually come to fruition. Crowfall, Pantheon, Star Citizen, Shroud of the Avatar, Camelot Unchained. 4 of these games are probably never going to officially release. One of them would have been better off if it didn't. The only hope for this way of doing things is Ashes of Creation. What else is there?? These games are just far too massive and hard to see to completion for the crowd-funding model. Chronicles of Elyria is the most egregious skim of people's money, but make no mistake, no one who has donated to the games listed above is going to get anything close to what they envisioned when backing the game. I guess I'll add the caveat that Crowfall may actually get an official release. Any bets the servers are shut down before two years are up?? People need to stop crowd-funding MMOs. You'd get more enjoyment from setting your money on fire.

Haha! I'm very confused why they initially chose to write the game in JavaScript. Wouldn't it have been more convenient to go for C# from the start? I would guess that any programmer they can get their hands on knows C#, or at least can quickly get up to speed from, say, C++ or Java. When I did my final exam project in college, I had never programmed in C#, but the guy I was working with knew it so I decided that it would be a great opportunity to learn the language while developing the program we we're planning to make. I already knew C++ and Java, so learning C# was a breeze. I learned it at a sufficient level for my exam project in a week. If I were to be hired by these guys, I would have felt much more comfortable coding in C# than in JavaScript/TypeScript, and I'm probably not the only programmer who feels that way.

@@oliver_twistor It's like when Star Citizen made the awful decision of basing their entire game on the CryEngine knowing it was never an engine made for Space mechanics. So what do they do? Rather than admit it would cost much more to overhaul the CryEngine and be more effective to perhaps move to UE3/4 they overhaul the CryEngine and now while the game does look impressive its broken beyond any real repair. It would cost more to renovate than demolish and start again at this point! 10+ years on its still a bloody tech demo and a bad one.

Long time Software Dev here: Moving from TypeScript to C# is a huge effort. One is a scripting language, one is compiled. Not only that but they have different patterns, so you need to adjust the whole layout of the project as you refactor the code. Not to mention that your vector for testing (lol like they test) is entirely different. Another thing is all the resources (libraries, frameworks, etc) that are used and possibly key for the project are now all incompatible due to the language change. Damn... Also it uses .NET, so they using Core or just committing it to launch on windows only?

Developer here. Taking *that* long to decide to rewrite things is extremely telling. There's a story of a studio (Looking Glass's Thief? Bethesda? Blizzard? I can't recall) that had to rewrite their engine with just a few months to ship, but they had a team of more than 1 software engineer. Also, the fact that they were going to release their game using Javascript (Typescript, whatever) actually speaks VOLUMES to their lack of knowledge/experience/planning. A game like this would have almost certainly been a Unity/C# project from the very beginning. That last comment about it being able to now run offline means that they were basically teasing the entire game being run IN A WEB BROWSER. I'll let that sink in for a minute. Also, when he says they switched to GOAP, he means this: github.com/sploreg/goap (aka, we googled and found a library that does what we don't know how to do) No software developer with *any* credibility would be at this stage in the game after years of development. "Stand-in" is a nice way of saying 'it isn't done, so we're hoping to fake it" Caspian really is just trying to keep himself out of a legal bind, isn't he?

As a modder and now indie dev, I can't comprehend this scam. We delivered Fallout: New Cailfornia and RimWorld Save Our Ship, mods people said were impossible to make, on a budget of fuckall free and 2 dudes, me and a coder. We're now working on an indie game and it's going super slow, but we replaced all the Unity assets in the first months and have at least the bare minimum of some systems prototypes, with goals of iterating and improving later. It's been 8ish months of full time dev work from 3 of us... (two artists, producer, coder)? And that guy has 8 mil and had 19 guys. Like... 3 of us do more work than that... in weeks... with a budget of good luck.

11:02 it's like studying french for 3 years and then realizing you dont even like french to begin with. generally there are talks way before a prototype is even begin designed, that end up leading to the proper programming language. you'd have the programming lead and the production team sit up and come up with various different options and iterating on them, untill a clear vision is set to stone. at that point you create a couple of prototypes and see what works and what not.

I don't even play MMORPGs but somehow I stumbled onto the CoE dumpster fire and became captivated. I just finished listening to all of Kira's videos on CoE. What a mess. Truly a comedic tragedy for the ages. I agree that Walsh is almost certainly trying to stand up _anything_ just to fend off the lawsuit. Crowdfunding rewards are a contractual obligation but there's a lot of room for interpretation in CoE's promised rewards since they're mostly in-game perks. Although if that's the plan then I wonder why Walsh didn't just contract out a browser game and call it CoE.

Thanks for another video regarding this farce ;) Regarding their fog of war issue: To be honest I do not see how this could be an actual issue if you think about how it basically works. All you need to program is this: assigning states to your terrain: unvisited, explored, character present. Based on the state a certain fog (dense for unvisited, less dense for explored) or no fog (character present) is displayed, based on the same state certain elements (buildings, trees, animals, ...) are shown or hidden. Finally you assign an area to your player character which sends out signals, so the terrain can update itself to the correct state when the player moves around. At least that is how I would try to resolve it. I am just a hobbyist game developer with limited experience, so there are probably even better solutions.

I'm too lazy to reference back to the video, but here are my observations as from this video (only saw the "Was The Game Ever Real ?" before this one / also I'm not game dev, but I'm software dev with some insight into how game dev is done as well, I like to believe): 1) Software development is always an iterative process, and in practice, having 3/8 tasks "fully" done from a milestone is pretty much a standard. There is almost always something that's been missed entirely and most of the tasks are left for further polishing later in the process. 2) The tech stack switch is indeed something that can happen several months into a project, but that almost always means starting from scratch. The decisions described in the posts sounded like something that could happen maybe 3-6 months into a project, still being a MASSIVE setback but might be worth it. Anything more than 12 months into a project... That's just a disaster... Also, the language there sounded somehow "professional" in the sense that the regular audience would not understand it, but actually was kind of "beginner-ish" (I'll come back to this later) 3) The "goals" in the milestone sound basic, but they actually are something that an individual developer (coder) might struggle with for an extended period of time. Especially someone with little experience. But the truth is, that established studios, even indie ones, have these at least partially "solved", and reusing the solution is a matter of hours. And also yes, those basically were the first things you put in a game. But I wouldn't put it as you did, if I recall correctly, that it is "easy" to do so. They are still pretty complex problems to tackle, it's only that they are well-known problems, with well-known solutions. But for someone just discovering them, they actually seem like rocket science. So basically - it seems like they are actually trying to do something - they're extremely under-qualified, while it appears as they're a bunch of people wanting to do game dev, but need to learn from scratch how to do it. - they decided to do a different (easier to make) game first to learn all this (wait when they realize how different from the game design point of view those games are...) - they know they failed, they tried to mitigate the consequences, and actually honestly feel bad about it (yeah, I really believe this) and want to deliver something - they started the work on this maybe like 12-16 months ago (considering the above - they're pretty much game dev beginners) - they probably had the time of their lives with your money before

Honestly, I could make KoE in a 12hour day, it really is not that hard, most of the code they would use is readily available in tutorials and all the assets are from the unity asset store anyway.
