The composer Yasunori Mitsuda worked himself ragged on this project. He ended up in the hospital at one point during production. Uematsu has a couple of tracks that he composed in Mitsuda's place. I definitely recommend giving Frog's Theme, Magus's Theme, Schala's theme, and Corridors of Time a listen. Mitsuda also did Chrono Cross (the sequel to Chrono Trigger), the Xenosaga trilogy, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (select songs).

This song is particularly amazing when you're familiar with the rest of the OST, and with the story. It's a battle between the heroes' main theme and the main theme of Lavos from its first phase, fighting back and forth to try and dominate the song. All the while, aspects of Lavos' third phase music are running just beneath the surface, hinting at the true nature of the beast.

Chrono Trigger has some of the most iconic and best soundtracks you can think of, it's such a well put together game that I was sucked in despite how old it is. It aged beautifully, it plays well to this day. This theme for me really gets the heroics with the fanfare, the desperation with the fast pace and the intimidation with those deep, long tones just right for me.

I think it's very good, but it's not quite best-of-the-best tier for me. Basically 1 tier below masterpiece, IMO.
@Dhalin
@Dhalin 2 жыл бұрын
@@thenonexistinghero I think that's fair. I mean, it _was_ a good game, but it's also an old game and certain design decisions that were made to fit it on the SNES can sometimes hold some people back, especially when it comes to newer gamers that are more accustomed to what modern hardware can do. It is a timeless classic, indeed, but yet it was never perfect. No game is ever perfect. But I'd say it deserves at least an 8/10, and those with nostalgia, 9/10. It's definitely one of the best SNES RPGs, and one of the ones that have aged the best.

@Dhalin
@Dhalin 2 жыл бұрын
@@thenonexistinghero Lufia 2 is good, but let's not get out the nostalgia glasses just yet. It had a few flaws that prevent it from being really great: One, it was just too darn easy, you had to go out of your way to find challenge, Two, the battle system was a downgrade to Lufia 1's (as was the battle theme). Now, that said, Lufia 2 had some of the best graphics of an RPG in a SNES game, and some of its themes were awesome (the normal battle theme not being one of them), and the puzzles were well-made even though they weren't popular. I am on the fence which I liked better: the mazy dungeons of Lufia 1 that I actually enjoyed (caves should be mazy..) or the puzzles in Lufia 2. I would have to say, though, that every cave having sliding block puzzles made no sense, lol. All that is to say that yes, Lufia 2 was a good game, but yet it had several flaws that held it back.

Its truly insane how crono and lavos theme are brought together in this song, without being cheap, corny or in the nose. Its truly masterfully done. The beginning and the end, melting together. Jesse, my friend... I have a ton of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross suggestions... Let's start with a simple suggestion of "The entire OST" for Chrono Trigger. I will make some more manageable suggestions seriously in a minute, but let's talk story and history behind the OST for Chrono Trigger. There are 2 composers: One you know and love, Nobuo Uematsu. However... he was brought in to FINISH the OST. He was not the primary composer. He was brought in on short notice to replace Yasunori Mitsuda who almost killed himself working on this OST. Yasunori Mitsuda was originally a sound engineer for Square Soft (Square was later bought by Enix to make the RPG Giant you know today Square-Enix). Mitsuda really wanted to be allowed to compose music though. After working on Secret of Mana, where he was allowed to help the composer there write a few tracks, he was given his shot to compose an OST of his own. That was Chrono Trigger. During that time, he put so much pressure on himself to succeed so that he would get future opportunities he worked non-stop. In Japanese Culture, it's not really unusual for people to sacrifice health for work, but Mitsuda went too far. He started coughing up blood from over work and not eating, and was hospitalized. By that point he had composed about 80 to 90% of the OST but Uematsu was brought in to compose the last few tracks or put finishing touches on tracks Mitsuda had composed but had not finished. With all that said... This is one of the greatest OSTs in gaming. My personal favorite tracks are Battle With Magus, Tyran Castle, Corridors of Time, and Schala's Theme. Oh, and some notes on this track: It's the final FINAL boss theme. It should sound Alien because Lavos is a world destroying star fairing parasite that sucks worlds dry, spawns and sends the spawn to destroy new worlds. Chrono Trigger is also a game that involves time travel to deal with this treat. And what I've spoiled isn't anything you don't learn a few hours into the game. It's an incredibly game that holds up 25 years later.

I live this fight: it is the final boss and (spoilers) he has consumed the dna of every powerful creature ever conceived in the timelines, and then he uses all their techniques against you. Funny shit is that you already defeated them all, so you already know how to defeat it. The music just adds to the whole experience using the leitmotif of the game plus some incredible mixtures of sounds of all important timelines. Fucking nailed it.

I'm glad you mentioned the panning because I was wondering if that was present in the video you're listening to. It's important to the feel of the song since the effect is so pronounced. The composer is Yasunori Mitsuda who's also known for the Xeno- series as well as Chrono Cross (and a bunch of other games I'm not familiar with) I think the is my first time taking a critical listen to this song, and I never consciously noticed all the leitmotifs used referencing earlier tracks in the game (this is the final boss battle) If you thought this was weird, he made a much more experimental acid jazz arranged album called "The Brink Of Time". While the album as a whole had some hits and misses for me, that version of World Revolution was an absolute hit for me. Might be a fun one to check out on stream at some point Edit: it was "arranged and performed by GUIDO (Hiroshi Hata and Hidenobu Ootsuki)"

It's possible to make Magus the easiest boss fight in the game (without level grinding!). You just need Robo and the sword they sell in Medina Village. Get Robo his AoE heal by beating the blue Nus in the Hunting Range in 65M BC and while you're there, you can get the money you need to buy the sword; trade the animal parts to the villagers to buy weapons and sell the weapons. You don't even need to be overlevelled to do it. I have a video on my channel if you need to see that in action, it's one of the Chrono Trigger ones ("Let's Play Chrono Trigger #4", I'd link it but it seems like linking videos causes YT to auto-delete your posts). With proper setup, it is literally impossible to lose as Robo can out-heal Magus's Dark Matter spell, as long as you don't let him run out of MP.
@pluto3194
@pluto3194 Жыл бұрын
@@Dhalin Honestly you don't even need to go that far. Just be on level, bring Lucca as your third and make Frog a healbot. For phase 1 just heal when necessary and react to barriers accordingly, and for phase 2 just never attack with Frog and heal off DM damage with 2 heals. Same general concept as your stat with Robo spam healing but with Frog who will almost always have Heal by the time you reach Magus.

@@pluto3194 Yes, but Chrono+Frog X-Strike does far more damage (if you get Chrono his Demon Blade sword) than anything Chrono+Lucca could possibly put out. All you need is a robot (who would think to bring Robo to Magus, anyway?) and a sword that is only sold by descendants of Magus's worshippers (poetic justice). Get said Robot some training so he can use his AoE heal, and.... well. Magus ends up being the easiest boss in the game, literally impossible to lose to him unless you do it on purpose.

This song very well captures the tension you as the player and the characters would be feeling at this time with the fate of the world hanging in the balance with hints of different themes you experienced throughout the game and times... and time that is literally being shown to you in the background as the boss progresses... and when the boss suddenly starts using his full power that can start one shotting your party members the theme intensifies further. The game has a spiritual sequel currently in the form of a free mobile game... if you are unaware would check out another eden.... the game is a gotcha game, but paying is not needed and the music in the game is just shy of final fantasy levels.

Chrono Trigger music has a lot of coverage over time period, so it's definitely worth checking out. Might I suggest also as well listening to the old Monster Hunter Music. Especially the Main theme: Proof of a Hero

If you do decide to give the game a go, I would probably recommend the DS version of the game over all the other ones. It feels cleaner and more organized than the SNES version, both in music and in dialogue. (Unless there is a better version that is. I have not played it in a long time.) You're in for a real treat when you get started. This game's entire OST is just that good. The game itself also has a good story worth experiencing, and is designed for NG+ with its multiple endings.

Oh my GOD dude you have to play Chrono Trigger. Do it on emulator if you have to. A lot of people on this comment board are going to recommend music from this game, chief amoung them "Corridors of Time', which is one of the pinnacle of video game music, but here me out first. I cannot advise you strongly enough NOT to listen to Corridors of Time (or much more of this soundtrack) without playing the game first and hearing it in game. Because as most gamers will tell you, there has rarely been a moment more powerful or transformative than suddenly encountering the place and time in the game where you first hear this track, and it is an awe inspiring, transcendent moment. It's the kind of thing that stays in your memory for years to come. And I say that without hyperbole. Love your channel

You are TECHNICALLY Correct, sir. For those unaware, The Radical Dreamers was never released State side, and it was more of a interactive novel, and Chrono Cross uses it as a base for its story... To me, Radical Dreamers is more like a 1.5... Cross is the 2nd game, 3rd installment I would argue. Especially since Radical Dreamers isn't canon although the DS version of Trigger kind of sets up to make it relevant... it's... confusing. Either way... We need another Chrono Game.

The first video game I played and left the bar maybe too high for the rest, sadly. FF6 was the only other in SNES that could match it for me. With the years I can appreciate "Treasure of the Rudras" for the creativity in spell mechanics or "Romancing Saga 3" for the uniqueness of each game run, but still are below Chrono Trigger.

Probably gonna be a while if you ever get to it, but Lunar's a beautifully scored game. Here's Luna's Boat Song from that game. Highly recommend: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rl7Sln6dfN5ld7s

To fully appreciate this track you need to listen to the whole OST. Or just play the game. This track pulls from several parts of the game, as does the boss fight.

2:45 that look on your face reminded me there's a really good video from 8-Bit Music Theory that discusses how weird the game's soundtrack is from a nuts and bolts perspective. Worth a look. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6uqooFnj7R4gLM

Chrono Cross is a sequel to Chrono Trigger, but in the loosest sense possible. Trigger is one of the best JRPG's on the SNES. Character and enemy designs by Akira Toriyama, music by Nobuo Uematsu, and one of the best time travel related stories I've ever seen, with quests spanning thousands of years, putting something down in one era, traveling to the future to see how it's grown, etc. As you probably guessed, this is indeed a boss theme, won't get too specific just in case you decide to check it out for yourself, but one of the cool things is how it uses leitmotifs. For instance, the segment starting at 3:59 is part of the main theme. The main theme being this vast sweeping adventurous song that really sets the stage for traveling through time, juxtaposed against the frantic nature of the rest of the song really ratchets up the tension for the fight.

100% on the nose except Mitsuda is the composer, not Uematsu (though he did contribute a few songs when Mitsuda fell ill).
