@SubduedRadical3 жыл бұрын
"...and that the last boss of Chronos is one of the first bosses of Remnant." ...this is actually...NOT...true. At all. In any way. This is, in fact, COMPLETELY wrong. Though I could see why you might make the mistake. One of the two final bosses of the first world of Remnant (Earth) IS, indeed, a dragon, Singe. But it's not the same dragon. At all. In any way. SPOILER: . . . The dragon at the end of Chronos is a Root psychological manifestation which inhabited the mind of the FIRST Dreamer, the experimental, semi-psyonic children that the Human researchers learned could be used to see into other worlds. Earth, also known as "The Core", is the center world of Remnant's metaverse. It isn't supposed to connect to other worlds and is supposed to always be distinct from them. "Children of the Core" are IMPLIED to be more powerful than beings from other worlds, which is kind of implied in Remnant as the reason you're able to do all the crazy stuff you can do. They also aren't supposed to leave Earth, which is stated in the flavor text for the trait you get when you arrive on Rhun the first time that says something about Children of the Core being forbidden from leaving the Core, but that this break in the rules may be allowed to correct what rampant rule-breaking the Root has done. Well, that and the Red Stone making you immortal, of course. It's still not explained as far as I can tell, but somehow, the/a Red Stone got to Earth (or always was there), the Humans found it, and Dr. Hry deciphered it using the whispering voice in his head, which happened to be the Root's consciousness. This is how the Humans began to use the Dreamers. While the rest of the Dreamers seemed to link to the mind of Guardians from each world, Earth, The Core, has no need for a Guardian as it has no door to other worlds. But because of this, one of the Dreamers was linked to by the Root's core consciousness. As one of the item blurbs says in Remnant "The Dreamers...we thought they were windows. They were doors." This opened the path for the Root to invade Earth. The Dragon is simultaneously that consciousness AND its physical manifestation. It is the linked body and mind of the First Dreamer and of the Root's main consciousness, and the door through which all Root coming to Earth flowed...until it became old and weak and could allow only a few through, and, finally, until it was killed by Chronos. However, the Dreamer was very old - like over a hundred years old - by the time of Chronos. So the Root decided it needed a younger, healthier vessel and doorway. Its ability to send Root to Earth had trickled almost to a stop by the time of Chronos, with most of the Root that were there having been there for decades. Plenty of time to take out the Earth and kill most Humans, but now more or less with no reinforcements. This is also why you only find a few Root at the very end of Chronos AND why the Tree is helping Chronos out, since the Tree is ALSO of the Root, and basically is leading Chronos to kill the First Dreamer/Dragon, which you do at the end of the story, and then Chronos is promptly drugged and hooked up to the equipment in their place, becoming a new, younger, healthier doorway for the Root. Chronos is the Dreamer at the end of Remnant's base game that is fused with the Nightmare, so they are together the final boss of Remnant, pre-expansions. And killing them is what closes the doorway on the Root...well, once you finish Subject DLC (the last one) and kill Dr. H as well, truly cutting the Root off from Earth. . The Dragon at the end of Earth in Remnant is NOT the same Dragon. It's arguably the Root making an attempt to recreate a clone of sorts of Chronos' Dragon, but Chronos' Dragon was killed, with the help/will of the Root, so that Chronos and the Nightmare could take the place of the First Dreamer and the Dragon as the new door for the Root into Earth. Why the Root doesn't simply kill itself isn't clear, but is implied because they don't want to shut the door until they have a replacement Dreamer (Chronos) to use to open a new door. Simply having the First Dreamer/Dragon die with no replacement would risk cutting the Root off from Earth entirely, rather than the actual goal of having a new, young, healthy Dreamer to be a new door.

Chronos looks distinctly fantasy whereas Remnant is rather lovecraftian, it’s an interesting shift.
@Eunostos4 жыл бұрын
Chronos actually covers the transition. Twas quite the cliffhanger.
@SubduedRadical3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, part of that is explained in the story - well, in Gunfire Games' characteristic method of not at all clearly explaining the story but having enough hints to sort of piece it together - but Chronos also has the Lovecraftian elements. Remnant has several different themes, but the fantasy elements are kind of overshadowed. For example, Remnant's "magic" is handled through weapon mods. Because these are tech, sometimes bio-tech, attachments strapped to your weapons, it's not often made fully clear that their nature is generally magical in nature, not technological. And when you're fighting the fantasy Pan in Remnant, you're doing so with guns. Which you also fight everything else with as well, including the Corvus natives, which are...well, ELVES! Sure, assimilated, bio-logical Borg-ified Elves, but they make it clear, especially when you find the last living, un-assimilated one in the Swamps' DLC, that that species are/were Elves. This kind of makes it easy to gloss over the fantasy in Remnant since it's well hidden behind steampunk and more Lovecraftian motifs. On the other hand, in Chronos, you have a talking tree, four elements of magic, and fight exclusively with melee weapons. Even though you venture to several of the same worlds, like the Pan and the Labyrinth, you do more fantastical things there, killing a Guardian on each (hence why the Guardian of the Labyrinth calls Chronos "The Destroyer"). While Remnant gives you melee weapons, and some even have some pretty fantasy themes like the Hero's Sword or like the flame sword you get from beating the alternate kill version of the dragon, since the gameplay mostly avoids them and you don't really make the connection as readily between weapon mods - that fill with gun use - to magic.
