My wife and I saw Go West on their 1986 tour in Portland at the Starry Night (iirc). What a phenomenal live band! Pure energy and every bit as good as the cassette that I wore out. You had to be there. One of the most memorable bands I've seen live up close and personal.

Came out in 1985, sounds just as good 37 years later. This is a legitimate great song, great video (Directed by Godley and Creme) and is one of many forgotten gems from the 1980's. It is as great as anything that came out from that decade, and it was the best decade ever for music.

Every once in a while, there's a perfect tune that comes along --- that checks all the boxes in your head, from melody, to lyrics, to the character of a voice... to even the corniness of a music video (albeit a dated marker for the era), that makes a song timeless. This one's for me. There are other songs I like a lot, but I can listen to Peter Cox sing "We Close Our Eyes" on a loop for hours. Don't need to analyze it. Don't need to dissect it. It just works. The video was directed by Godley and Crème who made a lot of videos at that time. They even made a video for 10 CC, the band they were once part of. I remember them telling about the video for Go West that the thing he is carrying the whole time was very heavy. That was why he was sweating so much.

Whenever I hear this song I'm automatically transported back to 1985. My football team is doing really well, later that year they'd gain promotion, albeit in tragic circumstances. After every home game, many of the younger supporters would go on a pub crawl around the city, usually meeting up in a club at the end of the night. I can still see one lad I knew, very drunk, stood dancing on a table singing along to the "We Never Lose A Game" line with his hands in the air, then everyone else joining in and cheering him on. It's a cherished memory that represents a time of innocence and fun before everything became very serious, very sad and very dark a few months later. I shouldn't have been allowed in pubs and clubs as I wasn't yet 16, but I hung around with older people and looked older than I was, so it was never an issue. I was still a kid really, looking back, but by the summer, I had to grow up very suddenly, so this song also represents the end of my childhood too. It evokes fairly bittersweet emotions, thinking about it. Which is odd for a fairly throwaway pop song.

Must be one of the most underrated hits of its time! Can't believe this song isn't played on the vintage radio stations more often (at least it isn't here in Sweden where you probably hear MJ's "Thriller at least 15 times before you hear this song just once).

What a banger. It’s almost criminal how little attention this band got from US radio stations back in the 80’s. I was in my early teens and hardly ever remember hearing this or any of their other hits during that time. It wasn’t until 1992 when “King of Wishful Thinking” came out that they finally got some real notice. Then they released “Faithful” and then faded away again. Thankfully those 2 hits plus their G/H album let me see how truly talented they really were.

I forgot how fantastic these guys were. I'm going to see a Nik Kershaw/Go West double header next year - will be a killer night! My 9 year old daughter is coming too - she loves them. She thinks the 80s absolutely destroy the current day pop. She's right!

Usd to love this song as a kid. I was kind of transfixed with the video, but I think it was the sight of a sweaty, confident Peter Cox that I found so appealing😍 It's still a banger of a track. Check out some of their live stuff from that era. Their lead guitarist, Alan Murphy, was phenomenal. A real virtuoso👏👏👏
