I just found the answer: this is very common on the very-common 3.0-litre Mistubishi 6G72 engine (which is pictured here....Mistu made this engine for Chrysler vehicles). Chrysler issued a service bulletin to dealers on the matter, telling them that the fix is to order and install Chrysler's 3.0 litre rocker arm spacer kit, part number MD361652. These spacers replace the springs used between rocker arms under the valve covers and fix the issue. Various vendors sell these kits, too, for around $100. This job is not for the average DIYer, as it requires removing the air cleaner, various accessories, valve covers, removing the rocker shaft assemblies from the heads without dropping the hydraulic guts from the rockers, disassembling each assembly and reassembling them with the spacers, then reinstalling it all. I'd call it a full day for a qualified wrencher, just to be safe. Google the part number or contact a Chrysler dealer, good luck!

@cliffjumper1984 Thank you! I run 15W 40 by Shell, some say a bit rough, but oil pressure is just fine and i got the same lifter ticking in cold condition with 5W 40 and 15W 40...strange..... Nice mods, great to find someone doing this on the 6G72

@Pentastar018 i am definitely rebuilding the engine. it has 142,xxx miles on it. i just bought some 15W 40 motor oil the other day, it seems to be working pretty good!

@1994lebaron Thank you very much! I always wanted to have a Le Baron Landau, cause of it´s more classic look and, of course, the bench style seats ans the column shifter. I used 15W 40 motor oil by Shell now, much more quiet than before! And it´s also OK for winter. Greetings from oversea Kevin

Thats perfect! Yep, the old 3 Spd also works with Dexron III. I´d replace the radiator, if it fails, you can hurt the 3.0 headgasket really easily. A coolant flush is a good idea, especially cause the water pipe between the cylinder heads is known for rotting from the inside out. And just use a coolant made for aluminium heads (the red one), i don´t know how it´s calles in english). If you have any questions bout those vehicles, especially engine / trans, just ask!

Yes sir! I got 2 of the valve guide smokers, one is getting rebuilt in spring. Probably the most common problems, engine itself lasts much longer, if you treat it right.

Its idle hunting. Back off your timing 5 degrees at the distributor and see if that helps. As for the lifter tick, you might try running 2/3 bottle seafoam for 15 minutes at idle right before and oil change. I did that to mine. It was quiet, then ticket very loudly, then stopped completely.

@cliffjumper1984 No, never heard yet... If you really add a few more mods, i´d go with 10W 60, best oil in this category is probably the Shell HX Ultra Racing. I used it last summer cause i get it really cheap, works very nice, oil pressure is perfect!

Thanks for info! Yeah i used the 15W only for a short period, more like a flush oil. I also used a 5W40 in the winter time, but oil consumptoin was horrible. So i run on Shell Helix HX7 (fully synthetic) 10W40 over the year. But i´ll have to reuilt it next year, 200 000 KM on the clock, needs some valve stem seals, already laying arround (orig. Mitsubishi).

@GrosvenorAudio You got over 300 000 KM, thats awesome, because it´s still running fine! Thank you, everything OK, how are you doing? Too bad....yes, the diameter of the AA Body (Spirit, Acclaim, Le Varon 4 door, Saratoga) doas also not fit on the most Minivans....

Oh yeah, you already got the Fury, 75 was the year of change. I´d say it´s normal. Do a engine oil flush with some special fluid, we use Liqui Moly engine flush here in Austria, good certified stuff. But some ticking on a cold start is normal. The valve adjusters got a small seal made out of RTV or stuff like that, it´s drying out over the years, also on low mileage.

Once the lifters start ticking, go to a thicker oil, say 20w-50. My car Triton (L200) was running 10W-40 @ 240,000kms now running 20w-50, now no noise from the lifters.

Sure its not piston slap? Those engines were famous for cold start piston slap, think there was even a TSB regarding it.

Thats right sir, interesting thing is, on my 1st gen. Voyager, lifter tick is extremely loud only 10 seconds after a cold start, on my Saratoga, the tick appears after running about 1 minute in cold condition....but, nothing bad. A coin would stand still on the plenum.

I love the IAC sound at the cold start LOL, so congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@1994lebaron Great! Of course, with 20W 40 or 60, it would be much more quiet....but you can´t use such a thick oil in winter, 15W 40 works fine, also on cold days!

@LeGortie 11 жыл бұрын
Lifter thick is normal , every Lebaron / Spirit V6 has it. Couse the oil is cold , if the eingine is warm the thick is gone (must be gone) if not then there is something wrong.

beautiful car first off, i'm jealous i've always wanted a saratoga. secondly yes those are your lifters, my 3.0 makes the same noise only continuosly and much louder. you can actually hear it in one of my exhuast videos haha, but beautiful car once again, such amazing things they are!

That´s an interesting thought... It actually sounds completely different than my 90´ Voyager (1st Gen.) 3.0. It´s got the classic lifter tick, a few seconds when cold and a noticable tick while running. My Saratoga only sounds like that when completly cold and only below 20 °C. I always let it idle for about 1 minute when cold, after driving away, the ticking always dissapeared....

Well a 10W 60 oil has the same viscosity than a 10W 30 in cold condition. The 10W 60 is only more temperature resistant, runs away like water in cold condition. I ran 5W 30 in the winter, same ticking after idling one minute right after cold start. After that, quiet. My 89´ Voyager is ticking on the first rpm´s after a cold start, completely different than my Saratoga. The valve stem seals going bad arround 175 - 200 000 KM on the 6G72. The most classic failure on those engines.
@Minivan_Man
@Minivan_Man 11 жыл бұрын
A -30 oil is just not high temperature rated like 10W 60. There´s absolutely no ticking difference between 5W 30 or 10W 60. It also was never ticking in warm condition, it was even better with the -60 oil. I run 10W 40 now, same story. Just worn out after 200k

That sounds like one of the shims has gone bad if the engine has self adjusting lifters. My recommendation is to use some engine restore and see if the shims re-inflate to their original size and go from there.

The oil leaking / consumption problem is the harder part.....timing belt etc. is OK, i replaced it on my Saratoga and 1st Gen. EU Voyager, it´s fine to do.

Very clean! I have the lifter tap too. But only in the morning for the first 15 or 20 seconds. I run Kendall 10w-30 syn. Check out some of my vids of my modded 6G72 P-body. WAI, 52mm (58mm is on it's way) ported older style upper intake, A/C Delete, moved coil, and weight reduction.

i would think doing the heads W/o the 3.3.l springs and LS1 retainers would still be less HP then a turbo but cost less and less likely to break something. and still makes it look stock

@Pentastar018 thanks for the info. I just got my 58mm TB from Ebay today. Add nice low end TQ, not much HP, but better Throttle response. I need to do the megasquirt for the ECU to flow more fuel. The engine almost always runs at what the stock ecu lets the fuel flow. kmperformance Go there and check out their head stetups

Well they got one big problem...the plugs on the cylinder heads in earlie models were designed too small and popped out, so there was a nassive oil leak. This could be a reason for a new engine....but the oil consumption problem after 100k miles kept going, i´d say it´s not a failure, more like the engines characteristics.
@Minivan_Man
@Minivan_Man 11 жыл бұрын
Probably yes, the oil consumtion problem should not be that intensive like on the early models. I´ve to ask...is the Acclaim a plane model, talking about column shifter, manual windows etc (i´m dreaming of one of those, really!) . Nice, we´ve got a lot of 924 and 944 arround here, not that special cause of the neighbourland (haha), but nice cars though, they have a huge fan area arround here!

Wow, how great! Yes of course, only use fully synthetic motor oil, i run Shell Helix 10W 40 on my Saratoga (EU Spirit), no lifter tick in warm condition, 200k on the clock. My Voyager I always got 10W 30 for 175k, massive liter tick. What trans do you have on the Acclaim? If you got the A670 3spd, have th ebans adjusted and change your fluid and filter, also if the vehicle´s got the A604 / 41te trans. Only use Mopar ATF+4 transmission fluid!

If you have any loose stuff running arround in your engine, you have a mayor problem....a flush on an old, maybe a bit sludged up engine is no bad i guess...only once, of course. Yes i know, i´m very active in the Allpar forum´s, the vale guides up to end 92 / 93 start to fail arround 100 - 120k

@1994lebaron If you´re planning to rebuild it, you should rebuild the engine too. The oil burning comes from blown valve shaft seals, common problem on those engines... How many miles do you got on your car? If less than 150k, you really should use some 15W 40, the hydraulic valve adjusters making that clicking noise, also a common problem, it does not kill your engine, but it´s pretty noisy...

The 15w-40 or 20w 50 oils are not good for this engine! In summertime, you can use 10w-40, in winter is 5w-30 or 5w40 fully synt oils allowed. 10w or 15w oils in winter seems like honey. No liquid, no lubrication after start in colt for long seconds. The earlier types of these engines had a valve cooling problem, to avoid that, you might be use fully syntetic oils. In winter I used ENEOS 5w30, that made the lifter ticking noise, i changed to a Liqui Moly 5w40, its perfect.

Thats not right. I have the same engine in a 95 Caravan sport.96,000 and it does the same sound with the wrong weight oil, and it does it when the oil is bad and the correct weight. It sounds to me lack of oil changes, 3,000 is not always best. I got mine and made the same sounds, but after taking care of it the right way and doing some distilled water through it made it run better and fixed all those odd sounds. Its the valve stem seal going bad, along with the lifter not pumping oil to thick

@Pentastar018 i do enjoy my car very much, it's not in the best of shape but nothing like a little restoration can't fix. i'm overhauling it next summer hopefully, and also getting it painted. (the paint is completed faded on the hood, roof, and the trunk lid.) a little hail damage here and there, but what can you expect from a North Dakota car lol. Do you think 15w 40 would help my lifter tick? it's quite loud. it also burns oil out of the exhaust, do you think that would help that also?

no wonder it ticks who the hell use 60w oil, that for racing apps. You only use 10-30 as manual states. No wonder it ticks and makes noise it does this not matter what temp, because 60w will not go through those bearing spaces not designed for it too thick. Plastiguage ensure clearances for oil
