I feel like Japan has really been falling behind in quadruped and biped robotics. They take manufacturing serious which is being eclipsed by the west, and the west has been outshining them with companies like boston dynamics for decades now.

Declining age demographics means institutional knowledge and manpower is gradually being lost. The spirit is there, but the people to put everything together are not.
@sixforks65432 жыл бұрын
@@pseudonymous1382 Yes they have a pretty dire situation on their hands. My issue is that due to that they have spent a lot of time and effort on robotics, fully knowing it will be needed to supplement the aging population, and yet have nothing comparable to what dynamics has. I think it boils down to talent and government money. Japan is also pretty stalwart in certain aspects of innovation, the 90s/00s aesthetics websites are proof. They are still a largely cash based society. I think innovation and progressiveness both societal and engineering fields have been slow to grind for a long time in Japan.
@pseudonymous13822 жыл бұрын
@@sixforks6543 I would contend that that "slowness" is itself a reflection of the aging population, unable to modernize. Through to the 90s, Japan was an absolute powerhouse in terms of innovation, especially within Japan so the slowed progress of innovation and reluctance to give up on outdated modes really only makes sense in the context of a few factors: 1. Japan, although stable, never recovered to it's Bubble Economy heights and is stuck in a protracted economic rut that ties up investment (both public and private) that would otherwise fuel innovation, 2. There's a rationalized pattern of thinking that follows which encourages old standards not change because they're, "good enough," i.e. there's no willpower to push for further innovation because the lack of investment makes risk taking more intolerable and 3. The aging population has caused retirement ages to rise, which locks in older people into institutions rather than renewal from people rising through the corporate ladder. This in and of itself tends to bias institutions towards being more conservative due to unchanging leadership.
