I trained at the dungeon from 1965 to 1968. I was 18 then. Wes Johnson managed the gym at the time. Dave Draper trained there in the mornings before he went to the Weider Store. I latter trained with Gene Shuey. When I came back from serving in the Army in 1970 the gym had closed and moved across the street in an old converted cleaning shop.

Does anyone remember during the Chuck Mahoney time 1950s a body builder who worked for the post office by day (mailman) with a corrected hair lip. He was very nice looking and very respectful and kind. I'm trying so hard to remember his name. As a teenager, I will never forget Mahoney

I love these old stories Ric. It's an addiction listening to them as much as working out. Sometimes if I have an hour before I have to go pick up my kid, I'll go to the gym but if I see you have one of these videos that Harkens back to the Golden Age. I'll turn around go back home watch the video and then go pick up my kid. And then I would kick myself in the ass and realize I could have watch this at night while everybody was asleep like I'm doing now... LOL

Keep bringing on the older guys and all the history lessons. Very enjoyable and informative. I always wanted to learn more Vic Yanney’s gym. I wish there was quality footage of the guys from the 40-60’s training. On a related topic: I laugh hard when I hear people talk about all the “new” exercises they’re doing now such as cleans, trap bar deadlifts, kettlebell swigs, etc... New? They’ve been around for decades (maybe even a century when you think of it). There’s no appreciation for the guys and the gyms that started all the old stuff. So, you keep bringing those guys on who were actually there. Awesome!

Hi Ric, I like these old stories very much, thank you! I wonder though how many of old bb have health issues that may be related to earlier drug use? Lalanne seemed to have none, but then he did not take steroids at all, right? I could be valuable to make a video about it, so younger guys are better informed about issues such as enlarged hearts etc? I myself would like to know more.

wonder if he ever encountered Chuck Ahrens? havent watched the video yet but he was apparently absurdly strong curling 160 lb dumbbells for reps seated in the 1950's and novbody ever even mentioned or hinted that he ever even tried dbol or deca which makes it even more insane. he also has the heaviest behind the head tricep extension/skullcrusher full range that i've ever heard of, there was a picture of him actually doing it with 405. just one where its behind his head and hes ready to begin it. but thats insanity. Pat Casey who at the to me was a teenager saw Chuck do some insane things and he later of course became the first man to bench 600 lbs and he worked out in the dungeon not a tonne but i think he was tied to Steve Merjanian somehow. both great benchers.

okay well a one arm barbell concentration curl with 185 was even more than i'd of expected plus the tricep feats are the most inspiring for me at least since i always try to get better at those
