When I set my base, I push my base and drain over the pipe and cut flush with the inside of base. I then take my dremel tool and cut the remainder of the pipe, with the cut off blade, from the inside of the pipe. I tell you it saves a lot of time. You only have to make sure the drain doesn't have a built in stop which wont allow you to push the pipe all the way thru the shower drain/box.

Good idea! That's how I see a lot of rough-in plumbing done-- pipe left long & then cut afterward. If the pipe has to be cut shorter prior to putting the shower pan down (if the flange has a stop for instance) I was thinking a Pringles can could be set in the pipe to help guide the shower pan down. (Assuming Pringles can is approximately the right size- I don't eat Pringles so I don't have any cans for comparison).

The inside PVC cutters are so awesome! Once you use one, you'll never do PVC without it again... The trap lead up is ALWAYS flush with the floor the pan rest on...The newer pans like Sterlings are really well built, so unless your floor is out of wack, it's best to just lay it on... I've done a couple dozen of these...One thing I learned a hard lesson yesterday; the Oatey strainers ( brass and PVC) won't mate to 2 inch copper...ONLY pvc...They just stopped making them...I tried givin the customer a waterfall...:)

if solvent weld is the only method you like to go with I can hit them dead on the mark every time, first we self level the floor and get it perfect, the place a level across the bottom of the base and measure to the drain make up, put the level on the floor and then measure down the take off and it fits like a glove every time! 18 years in the trade here and 4 years having my own company, I set tubs and shower pans on the second floor of houses all the time flawlessly without having to cut ceilings or access, one shot one kill!

Hi from Ireland. You should leave the 1 and a half inch up stand pipe outside the tray then leave a narrow channel for the pipe to meet the outlet from the trap. That way you can connect the pipe to tray with a 90 bend etc drop the trap in place level it on the compound mix leave set over night and then just connect the tail that's left to the up stand pipe. I find that leaving the up stand off centre gives more room to connect using a 45 and 90 bend so it's easier to connect other then one 90 bend.

One way I’ve done it is take a level and measure from the underside of the shower pan to the face of shower strainer. It’s got to be obviously tightened in. Then when you have that measurement, subtract the engagement of the fitting. Now that you have that measurement, that is what you need to take off the riser from below the finish height of floor. Hopefully that suggestion help ya out. 🙂 Realized I wasn’t quite clear. When getting that initial measurement, you lay the level across the face of strainer and take measure from the the side of the level that’s touching the face of strainer to the raised underside of the pan, or where it will make contact with the floor. Using an internal pipe cutter on a drill helps for the cuts below finish height of concrete. Hope that helps.

this trick works on 1&1/2" pipes. what I do is I get a shower drain that has a 2" fixture outlet and screw that puppy on. now cause its 2" the 1&1/2" pipe should stick right up thru the 2" outlet. with a little measuring and some common sense u cut her where u need her to be first time. then I just slam in a 2" to 1&1/2" bushing (pretty sure if u cut off an extra 1/8" to 1/4" it makes up for the little lip inside of the bushing) and gluer down. if u got a 2" pipe coming up youre shit out of luck, aint no short cuts on 2" show drains that I know of. having inside pipe cutters are key though so you don't wreck all those nice sawzall blades you got.

In your case I would cut it shorter and use a coupling and again place it, and measure from the top through the drain and cut the pipe 1/8" shorter, apply glue, drop it in, and happy customer! Hope it makes sense, for me it works, and the easiest way I know.

That finish face is taking a beating every time you lift that pan off. Little adhesive plastic does wonders. herein is my two-cents; when the base is installed with dirt beneath the concrete floor (slab on grade)my mind set says any leak is of no consequence...do your best, its the best scenario a plumber will ever have... i read some others comments and yes there are better strainers which are more plumber friendly, another option is your rough in practices; e.g. the tail pc that extends upward from the p- trap, leave it unglued, make rough in box bigger if needed, tell whoever is doing the concrete work there is a back charge for leveling... the caveat here Capt. Ron is: dont inform your fellow co-conspirators in a way that could impede your profit margin duh in business since 1993 guess you know your way amongst the pc world in which we try to make a life containing some quality...great to hear you reach out for others ways of tackling and finding solutions to continue on the road to retirement...could you then write a home owners guide to plumbing repairs and installations, include those adages such as "IT WILL WORK' or the west coast favorite, "a plumber needs but to know two things and i forgot them both", this is a good one, "i cannt see it from my house" SURF'S UP

@@ChuckBarron Thanks Chuck. Awesome video. I noticed you use plumber's putty around the shower drain seal. I was about to follow that. Then I noticed the warning on the Oatey Stain-Free Plumber's Putty that says " Do not use on ABS". After lots of reading I am truly confused. It seems there is a 50/50 split in using plumber's putty vs. 100% silicone caulk as far as personal preference, pros and cons of each. I get that part. However, it seems the plumber's putty will eventually degrade the ABS on the drain causing it to crack and fail? "Most rigid plastics installed using putty will eventually lose their durable, resilient structural characteristics, and become brittle - sometimes brittle enough to break with your fingers. This effect can be accelerated in plastic components that are under tension, like fittings or drains that are threaded tight to sinks or shower floors, causing cracks which lead to leaks and damage. " Anyway. I would love to hear your take on this as you would be relying on your vast experience. Thanks again, S from Canada

also when you throw your mortar down just like on tile you want to put reliefs, put indentions/cuts so it has somewhere to go

Hey CB, what ABS adhesive are you using where you can apply it, set your pan and then remove it, re coat the connections and reset the pan? You applied first at 10:05 and removed the pan at 11:20. Then applied again at 12:20 and set the pan for good.

Not sure of brand. Plenty of glue first time, was not happy and pulled off right away. then gobbed it for final time and powered it on. I have done that a lot in my career. glue fitting, ooops screwed up....remove and redo. I also have been unsuccessful too. Measure twice cut once. I should listen to my own advice....ha

Not worried about the brand but more of what the product is. It's certainly not contact cement since it would have locked within seconds of joining the parts. Can you tell me what the product is?

CB-1 if I was you next time you should have added some of that mix in the front half of the pan because after it dries the backsides going to be real solid. When you walk on it with your bare feet you can tell the difference while you're showering I'm just saying. That was a little Tech tip peace brother
@ChuckBarron6 жыл бұрын
ok roger that......that base was already a solid base but good point.
@jeffcoolhd6 жыл бұрын
Chuck Barron That shower Base did look like a well-made one and the instructions probably said you didn't have to use any thinset underneath this base but it does make it a much more solid shower base with the thinset mortar I've done a lot of them. I just thought I would let you know that for future reference take care buddy. Pease
@nohalo4me5556 жыл бұрын
Makita man I too recommend setting the pan in thinset. I didn't. Every time my 225lb body steps in the shower it creaks. I'm guess the slab was not perfectly level and I didn't notice. No cracks after 10 years, but each creak makes me nervous. Any post installation remedies?

Excellent video, appreciate you taking the time to video this and make it available. Out of curiosity, why didn't you put a thin layer of mortar on the front side to hold the shower completely secure, while using extra mortar on the back to level? Thanks, Phil

Use mortar instead of concrete so you don’t crack the shower base. You would be surprised but even the smallest rocks in the concrete can crack the shower base especially if it’s fiberglass. Then you have to come back and and tear everything out and pay the tile guy and the dry wall guy to come back too!

If you get one run the drill in reverse so you don’t lose the bit in the pipe.. when you run it in reverse with the inside cutter it tightens it up..great tool for stuff like that.. 😎🏄🤙

@chuckbarron have you seen tigerfish inside pipe cutters? Best cutters for this you can't live without it once you have. Also plaster of Paris is better than thin set or mortar, it doesn't shrink or leave any gaps

my solution to the shower base install? have someone else install it :)) A "glue on" strainer yikes! I'd have went for a tamp in rubber seal or screw/clamp type seal, the hole is large/pipe fit loose and you install the seal after it's set in place. one less thing to fight while setting in mud/plaster, trying to glue and mud at the same time is a complete nightmare!

man for sure....had some rough rubber shower gasket troubles in past..we chose the abs since rough was pretty good but still a struggle....rubber gasket the way....next time.. not many basements here at the shore thank god.

Thank you for this video. I think it would have been a good idea to have shimmed underneath the showerpan to get it level before trimming the final amount for the pipe just in case the difference in height for level affected how long the pipe needed to be. I would also suggest taking a cardboard tube (like Pringles can) to set inside the pipe temporarily to help guide the shower pan down straight. A capped or upsidedown Pringles can would also keep crud from falling down the pipe. Alternatively, Robert Roca's suggestion of leaving the rough-in pipe long and then cutting it off from the inside after the base is set would be a good idea. What was the name of the stuff you used for mortar? Struculite? The CC kept giving different spellings. I'm going to be installing a 60" Sterling shower base in the near future so I've been watching how to do installations. It will have the matching sterling surround since we despise tile. It will be on a wood floor instead of concrete though.
@ChuckBarron4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. its struc u lite out of homedepot. its spelled odd.
@mycats73214 жыл бұрын
@@ChuckBarron Thanks! I'll have to see if they have it at the nearest one to me. Another technique I've seen suggested by plumbers is to do piles of mortar in various spots so that they have room to spread out. I believe it was Terry Love who suggested doing 9 piles under a 60" pan. I plan to use low expansion spray foam in the cavity for the front apron just to add a little more support. Current shower/tub has a crack in the floor (it's over 40yrs old & ugly AF-- avocado green 1-piece monstrosity). I want to make sure new shower will have adequate support.
