The girl who struggled with her lack of battling talent compared to her friends accepts the truth and finds her own path where she can better help others. In Paldea, the league knows where everyone's going to be starting their journey from, so the strongest gyms are the furthest away from the start by design. The League wants the gyms to be a challenge, so they don't want trainers to start off against ice, psychic, or ghost types, which are bad a low level, or to finish against bugs, which are bad at high levels.

Also non in-universe,, gamefreak promoted this game with slogans like "Visit the gyms in any order you like!", and that just rubs me the wrong way when you have gyms at level 15 and gyms at level 55,, l'm sure you technically could grind up to level 50 to beat the last gym first but there's a clearly intended route. l dont necessarily mind that there's a clearly intended route, but then they shouldnt market it like you can choose any order you'd like. Most of the ranch mons can be pretty helpful for Cheren in a nuzlocke. Be it disabling tackle on lilipup so it is doing significantly less damage with unstab bite thunder wave shenanigans or even just charm out stat changing work up. Riolu can’t get stab but if you run around a bunch to evolve then the raw stats and steel type being stupid early game makes Lucario a free win. Only really a problem if he crits too much/flinches you a bunch in my experience but you do have to act carefully in a hardcore nuzlocke and make sure to bring your a game. Cheren is definitely the biggest roadblock for a while though because you will probably at least have 1 normal by now and stab return is kinda stupid this early.

@NoCryinRyan Жыл бұрын
Since Emile’s not covering Challenge Mode until post game, I’d like to explore it on a fresh save file. Cheren is the first big change, as not only are his Patrat and Lillipup one level higher, but he has a Pidove on his team as well an Oran Berry on his Lillipup; his Patrat has Detect, which can make it annoying to take out, his Pidove has Quick Attack, Work Up and Leer (Mareep can be helpful here), and his Lillipup is bulkier than you think it would be with that 10 extra HP. For a first Gym Leader, Cheren doesn’t pull any punches and uses the tactics Alder encourages you to do. He’s a tough but fair fight; great for the first Gym Leader and they only get better from here.
@tmasterlordoflightning4754 Жыл бұрын
It’s worth noting, there’s evidence in the Nuzlocke community that Challenge Mode doesn’t affect stats despite the level increase. If you’re going for Challenge Mode, it’s solely for the extra Pokémon that major fights would have.

@Loner098 Жыл бұрын
Fun Fact: There's apparently a Pokemon ROM hack called Pokemon Crystal Clear that *can* scale with the player's Gym Badge count. For example, if you go to Blue with 0 Badges in hand, he'll have a fairly low-level team. But if you go to Falkner with 15 Badges, he'll have a *Zapdos* on his team. You're also allowed to rematch *any* Gym Leader at *any* set Badge level; can be useful for grinding. And if you ask me, the game feels much more open world than Scarlet and Violet. I think there's also Pokemon Radical Red that has level scaling, but it seems to *cap* your party at specific levels until you've beaten the next Gym Leader.

Even if it’s the typical progression of a sequel, it’s cool to see older characters resolved to doing new things. What’s nice is that even after this point, these characters come back but never take the spotlight. Also cheren’s battle is low key hard with no riolu or pignite.

I love the idea that Gym Leaders need different teams based on the amount of badges a challenger has, now if only a certain recent Pokemon game had incorporated that into its gameplay. Also, hurray for dynamic music making hype moments like Gym battles and even walking along a route more engaging. Also, also, what a glow-up Cheren got simply by adding a few inches and removing his glasses.

Chugga, you approach every game you play with an immense amount of love. I played and loved black 2 back a few years ago, & you have already shown more love for this game than I could ever in an entire playthrough. It was pretty cool to see Cheren back as a gym leader, but man, he’s a piece of work to beat! That Lillipup is scary when it uses Work Up multiple times. And this is just the first gym! Crazy that normal type gyms are in most cases one of the most difficult in their respective games. Definitely far from normal!

I like the idea of being Cheren's first challenger as a Gym Leader. You can see in his sprite animation that he's a bit nervous and if you played Black and White you have this history with him that just makes you feel happy seeing how far he's come.

Alder's my favourite pokemon Champion, he has some Dark Souls vibes to him. He's a capable trainer with a powerful team, but he suffered a tragedy before your journey even began and it left him disillusioned and crestfallen. I liked how he's dethroned by N before you reach him, meaning that any battle you have with him is by choice opposed to it being just another step in your journey, and how he absolutely destroys his knees when you meet him in Black and White 2. What a legend!

Cheren learned the ways of putting fear into newbies from the other normal gym leaders well. He has a good plan: stockpile power until you steamroll everything in your path, have decently fast pokemon for that point in the story, and for extra fear, the player has a limited supply of battle items to use that can help if they found it beforehand (oran berries and 1 x defend), and no way to get more aside from trading with held items. Yeah this guy was a good challenge to overcome, and you felt good when you finally won

*While fighting Cheren's team* Pignati: *breathes* Ok. First real Gym Battle. Wish me luck guys. Ontario: Good luck! Shanir: You'll need it. Cheren: So, you think you can beat me? We'll see about that. Go! Patrat! Patrat: Hee hee hee. So, my first opponent in battle. And it's a tiny little pig? Oh, I'll be eating good tonight once I grind you into dust. Pignati: Uh,... ok. Give me your best shot. Patrat: Well, actually. I think I'll Work Up first. *uses Work Up* Picky: Um, on second thought I don't want to do this anymore. See ya! *runs out* Shanir: You're next. Pignati: Alright, let's go! Defense Curl! Shanir: Wait, what? Pignati: I mean, I could use that to soften the blow from his attack. Patrat: Oh, I see how it is. Think you can outbuff me? Think again! *uses Work Up* Pignati: Uhhhhh.... Defense Curl? *uses Defense Curl* *pattern repeats a few times* Patrat: Oh, I feel so powerful right now. I'll make quick work of you now you swine! Pignati: *getting nervous* Guys, what should I do? Shanir: Tackle him. Kill him before he kills you. Pignati: That works. *uses Tackle* Patrat: Ugh. I see how it is. But it's too late. Once I powerup again, I'll be so strong your body with be nothing but... Pignati: *uses Tackle again, knocks out Patrat* *Cheren sends out Lillipup* Lillipup: *realizes what happened to Patrat* *nervous laughter* So, um... you wanna call this a draw? Patrat: *lying on the ground* Just, finish, him. Lillipup: Dude, the guy used so many Defense Curls there no way I'll be able to knock him out. Pignati: He's right. *Ember's him to death, Lillipup faints* *Blaise Wins* Pignati: O...kay? I won, I guess. Such a weird battle though. Ontario: Yippee! Congratulations Pignati! *hugs him* Shanir: Nice job out there. One down, seven more to go. Pignati: Yeah, as long as all the other battles are this easy, we'll become a Pokemon Master in no time! First gym time! Already. Not a bad first gym, all things considered. Cheren can hit hard with that Lillipup of his, and if you haven't been training against the wild Pokemon he can be a decent challenge. Nothing too hard, of course - he is still the first gym leader, after all - but for the first real boss battle it's a good start. It's also just cool to see what one of the main characters of Black and White is up too now. Pokemon is a series light on direct narrative sequels, so it's not often we get to see something like this. It's neat.

At least Cheren doesn’t have a Watchog that knows Leer, Hypnosis, Retaliate and Crunch. Seriously, I still haven’t beaten Lenora in Black 1. And she never uses Hypnosis when I have a Chesto Berry equipped!
@shiningmagneton469 Жыл бұрын
@@jasminejohnston6393 Yeah, Lenora is quite the difficulty spike and at least part of the reason Watchog is my least favorite Pokemon. If you need some help for your team, there are some fighting types just outside Pinwheel Forest you can train up, as well as Roggenrola in Wellspring Cave. The developers knew she was a difficult fight, and put in plenty of ways to try and counter her. She's still hard, of course, but sometimes you just need that one perfect fight... Or just get lucky, like Chugga did back in White. He had a fighting type on his team he never needed to use!

I like Cheren's growth a lot in this game, though admittably it's very werid that he isn't a gym leader later on like the 6-8 gym leader. Also thanks to work up the gym is actual pretty hard in terms of first gym standards; stat increases this early game is kinda insane. I remember hearing about someone attempting a nuzlocke of this game only to lose to the first gym because of work up lmao.
