Church of Holy Cross Ruins, Wallsend

A look at a medieval church located at the end of a housing estate in Holy Cross, Wallsend. Built in the 12th century by the monks of Jarrow using stones from nearby Hadrian's Wall, it was the only church in the parish.
During the 18th century it fell to bits, the roof collapsed so local services were held in a nearby school until St Peter's Church was built in the 19th Century.
In the early 1900s, the remains of Holy Cross church became a site of local interested with steel railings installed around it to preserve it and later became a scheduled ancient monument.

Lived in holycross for 21 years just down the street at Parkside, the ruins were my playground. story was there was a secret tunnel under the tyne to Jarrow

St peters church was built in 1809 and has a very interesting history. There are a number of pit diastet mass graves in the churchyard and a neautiful collevtionof stained gladd if u want a look just contact me mavis Churchwarden of St Peters
