While serving as an organist at the local Adventist church in LaCombe Alberta, Jason Biel was audience to a particularly homophobic sermon. In that moment, he knew he had two choices - to stay or to leave.

When I found myself pregnant at 16 years old, my pastor decided to preach a sermon on fornication and how I was going to go to hell when I died. I was so embarrassed, and I wish I had been mature enough to walk out. In adulthood, I avoid churches and religion whenever possible. It was a traumatic experience.

I'm so sorry that "religious" people act so hatefully and pretend it's for Gd. (Over the years people have expected that sort of 💩 from me!) Gd loves and accepts us all as we are. It's our fellow humans that are closed minded. Whether you do religion or not, hopefully we all find loving, accepting support systems to be part of. Gd bless! ❤️🙏🌈

@Steven bent1 If you would objectively take the time to study and understand the Bible, you would find out that everything you mention has been addressed over the centuries, and shown that there are no discrepancies whatsoever in the Bible. The most evil people on the planet have still never been able to disprove God's True Word, the Holy Bible. Anyone who isn't already biased and prejudiced in their heart about knowing God's truth will be able to "see" and understand God's message, but, those who in actuality refuse God's free plan of salvation have hearts that are against God. Bottom line....it is all true, all of the Bible is true, because there can only be true justice for evil men by the Almighty God's final judgement, where the good will receive their reward and the evil will receive eternal punishment. It's so very clear. As for me, I choose life through Christ, and we all have free will to make our own choice. It's actually a "no-brainer"; and of course, I have nothing to lose, and you have EVERYTHING to lose. Cheers.

Sesshomaru Uzumaki Actually it's a lifestyle of holiness. If the preacher were to preach against adultery should all the adulterers leave? What if he preaches against fornication, should all the fornicators leave? If you're in a church and you know what's in the bible you should expect the possibility of being offended if you're engaged in what the bible calls sin. The preacher wasn't targeting this guy.

Just recently and in Melbourne/Australia and during a church service, A Greek priest said that he'd rather shoot gay people instead of supporting marriage equality and one wonders about all these people who are "supposed" to represent God yet they spew their hate and insecurities and what is worse is the people that support them. Jason, you did the right thing by respecting your self for who you are!

Hate speech and violence from either side is totally abhorrent. Australians are about to vote in a Plebiscite s/s marriage. here is my assessment of both sides. The “no” campaign is fighting a losing battle trying to offer history and procreation as reasons for keeping the traditional definition of marriage. The homosexual lobby has been very clever to paint religion as the enemy of equal rights, anti-discrimination, free speech and progress. But of course statistics reveal love and long term commitment are hardly the defining tenets of a homosexual lifestyle. Under a multi-coloured rainbow banner, the YES campaigners chant “We should be able to marry whoever we want.” which has apparently won over a gullible public not wanting to be seen as discriminatory or "homophobic'. The same statistics prove that the real enemy of SSM is not religion but nature and their own reckless lifestyle in their constant need for sexual gratification with strangers not in the 10s but literary in the several 100s. (Bell and Weinberg) SSM is really a dangerous slippery slope, opening the door for any individual, religious sect or ethnic group to press for acceptance of polygamy, underage brides, incest and/or even bestiality. The claim that such activities are the product of one’s genetic makeup would surely be denied by courts. Evolution by natural selection would necessarily have bred out the 'homosexual gene' over 1000s of generations because it would not lead to procreation. In reality the homophiles represents about 2-3% of the population but in the UK and especially the US, those actually embracing marriage is insignificant if not irrelevant to the debate (see Pew Research). More than 50% of homosexuals claim to have had 500-1000 partners, 80% of whom were with total strangers. Clearly It is not about marriage or equality but their need for us to condone and ‘normalise a promiscuous lifestyle that deep down their conscience tells them is destructive. Studies by NHIS reveal increased depression, mental ill-health, STDs, suicide, domestic violence and even child abuse. There are alarming Educational & social implications if s/s marriage is legalized. Despite claims to the contrary, governments cannot legislate to protect from abuse, the rights of churches, schools, individuals or businesses who withhold or refuse homosexuals’ demands. Those who advocate for the ‘no’ vote have already been vilified and threatened on social media. In the UK a private schools were threatened with closure if they didn’t include same sex education in its curriculum. Even worst outcomes are being realized in US States like Massachusetts where a parent was arrested for wanting to exclude his child from such indoctrination. That says it all, doesn't it? And all this goes on under the farce of anti-discrimination and "marriage equality". If the implications for families weren't so tragic, it would be laughable.

A couple of years the pastor at my current church made a sermon on the lgbtq community and basically said that you have to either deny your (lgbtq) identity or you're denying Christ. I started crying while listening to this because I remember having to sit through that and not do anything because I was scared about when my parents reaction would be if they noticed I had walked out, they're deeply hateful of the lgbtq community and I've been in the closet all these years. 😔

So much respect for your strength. I went to a Christian school for 13 years, I sat through bible class after bible class hearing homophobic messages. One of my biggest regrets now is that I didn’t walk out. The one that hurts the most is when we had to put anonymous colour coded stickers to say if we agreed with certain topics. One of them had the words “Gay people deserve respect.” It wasn’t about gay marriage, it wasn’t about gay people being parents, hell, it wasn’t even about if being gay is a sin. It was literally if they deserve basic fucking respect. Over half of the stickers on that one were red. I had never feared so much, or felt so hated as in that moment. I was still very much in the closet at that point, and my heart sunk so low. I wish now that I would have grabbed that piece of paper and marched down to the principals office with it, that I would have done something. Instead now there’s class after class, with people in them feeling the same fear I felt. I wish so much I would have had the strength to walk out like you did.

It's stupid ass questions like this that divided up humanity with manipulation and intimidation then have the nerve to ask, why do they look demasculinized(intimidated) and manipulated. You religious sociopaths have some fucking nerve you with your failed science trying to hijack today's first world cultures and sciences with your manipulation and lies trying to intimidate those who you use do deem as invalid from your old and failed ass descriptions on how the world works. You got places even trying to ban math because it will lead kids to wanting to learn science and that will lead them to questioning the bible. Maybe you might want to ask yourself is today's technology and science really worth ditching for yesterday's 2000 year old cultural sciences. Do you want to go back to the medicines of that time too or do you want today's cures? You need to check yourself and culturally catch the fuck up. Then help the rest of your people catch up too.

When I was 15 I sat through a sermon addressing the legalization of gay marriage in America. At the time I had not accepted that I was gay but deep down I knew that I was. I wanted so badly to walk out or say something but I was with my family and it was a small church and I didn’t have the courage. So I just sat and listened to how the sanctity of marriage was ruined and how people like me would end up in hell. It was horrible and many other situations like that have deterred me from going to church even though I’m still a Christian. It’s terrible that people will use religion, something that’s supposed to help people, in order to further their own hatred and bigotry.

Why aren't we past this bullshit by now? Superstitious beliefs began when we were clueless hominids, and religion began when rich people realised the divide in education gave them power by speaking 'THE TRUTH' to poor underclasses who didn't have the means to research and question for themselves. That's history in a nutshell, we can all read now, and it's all still right there to see. I'm honestly glad this guy feels more comfortable now, but fuck what those guys think. Well when I see the words "I dare you' with several exclamation points and in all caps, I find it quite immature. This kind of grammar school persuasion is hardly appropriate within mature conversations. What I find almost laughable is that the article that you "dare" me to read, is dated from 1988. My question to you is, why are you citing a piece of writing that is almost 30 years old? Also I find it intriguing that you responded to my comment, instead of merely posting your opinion. In addition, you write that you "know dozens of musicians, none of which..." The correct grammar is "none of whom". When arguments are presented in writing and contain grammatical mistakes, it automatically reduces the apparent validity of the person writing the argument. I think the dare at this point would be for you to update what you are reading. No, yours is not a hate comment, but citing an opposing view that was written more than a quarter of a century is ago is hardly relevant to this discussion. In addition, the author that you dared me to read, I will point out "left the Episcopal Church in part due to their opposition to the evangelizing of Jews." So clearly, he had more purpose in his actions than merely speaking against sexual minorities. Thank you for contributing your musical talent to your church.

Oof in middle school my momma took me to church Sunday after our cities pride parade. The pastor went on and ranted about how god should strike down lightning, hellfire, and kill everyone at pride. I got my ass up and walk it to the bathroom. I was sitting with my friend and her grandparents. She followed me and convinced me to go back. My mom was sitting there shocked at such hatred. Later on she told me how proud she was that I did that. That I was brave enough to get up and walk away. I made a stand without saying a word and she was ashamed that she couldn’t follow my lead.

Now I’m not very religious at all and my sister kind of is but not really. My worst fear is that one day we’re gonna go to church with my grandparents and they’ll start preaching homophobic stuff... idk what I would do in that situation because 1. If I were to storm out I’d basically be outing myself and I’m not ready for that and 2. I have no clue what my sister would do. This happened to me many years ago. I was (and still am) organist of a small Episcopal church in SW Oklahoma. We had a new priest just beginning his tenure with us, and the second Sunday he was there, he got into the pulpit -- looked me straight in the eye and said: "I have personally cured 4 homosexuals!" I was dumfounded, and had a very hard time keeping myself from throwing a hymnbook at him across the choir. Luckily I didn't -- it was nearing Christmas, and we had a very nice Christmas concert planned for the next Sunday. After service, I told the senior warded that I would be leaving right after Christmas. Evidently the word got out, and the new priest offered his resignation right after that. That was over 30 years ago, and I'm still there, love the congregation, and they evidently like me and my work. However, to hear such remarks in such a setting is one of the most hateful experiences anyone can be put through.

Here`s the thing.. You can´t pick and choose what you accept from the Bible and what you don´t. The Bible teaches that All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.. It also teaches that having sex with another man as with a woman is an abomination. If we as believers do not call out homosexuality as sin then we are not loving people. Christians should love the sinner but hate the sin. This guy really started off on the wrong foot when he called playing at the Church service "performing". It is not a performance. The role of the organist is to lead or to assist in leading the praise and worship. It is a ministry. As for going where he feels accepted then the Bible talks about people only being prepared to listen to what their ears are itching to hear.

Yvonne "bi's" are by definition promiscuous and have no grounds to support s/s marriage . Come on dear, be honest for once in your reckless and dangerous life. The vast majority of homosexuals have no intention of committing to a long-term relationship. (See Pew Research) The "yes" campaign is merely the desire to get a majority of gullible voters to condone and normalise a lifestyle that is reckless, debilitating and not least a huge cost on the health system . Consider women's bitter fight a 100 years ago for the right to vote. Imagine if only 2-3% turned up to vote on election day, and then 3 years later most of that number couldnt be bothered a second time. Would you think that their agenda had any thing to do with voting? This analogy is apt when one considers the number of homosexuals in the US have embraced 'marriage" 76000 out of what 8-10 million and then the failure of such relationships in the 1st 3 -4 years. Homosexuals in the US are 60 times more likely to contract AIDS than heterosexuals Health24.com Recently updated, UNAIDS estimates that US $26.2 billion will be required for the AIDS response in 2020. Comments like this is are why I don't believe in organized religion. That said, so the CREATOR made a mistake? If not he is living his life the way it was meant to be. You can't have it both ways. Either you decide that he was made the way he is suppose to be or a mistake was made. The mind, as I see it would be part of the creation. Decisions are made in the mind. People may not make the best decisions. But perhaps a chain of events was planned all along and that is the reason why some "sinful" decisions are made. Maybe they were planned to lead to something positive for someone or something else down the line.

Reading these comments, it really pisses me off that my brethren and supposed arbiters of God’s love can be so cruel. It’s one thing to disagree with a person's lifestyle, another to humiliate, disrespect and terrify them. For shame. Many of you men and women who have been hurt by the church will enter the gates of heaven ahead of these so-called men of God.

you're not any better if you're calling it a lifestyle. It's not my style to be hated by your entire religion I just want to be left alone but you Christians make that impossible

That's the problem with relying on unchanging holy books--their undigested barbarism never really goes away. It can always be regurgitated should the need arise. I'm a gay atheist, myself.

I’m glad you were able to convey the message while still acting as a good professional and finishing the job. I’m a trans organist. After 14 years working for very conservative churches I finally started a new position for a liberal denomination last month. Still haven’t “come out” to them, but the simple fact that I wouldn’t be fired on the spot simply by having this truth revealed is very relieving.

I'd have had to hear the sermon. These days, if one says ANYTHING that is not totally obsequious to the gay community, one is labeled "homophobe." Not to mention the gay community tends to respond to hateful comments with their own versions of hateful comments.

The substitute pastor didn't know there were any gay people in the congregation, or he didn't care. Neither is good. Speaking from a pulpit carelessly is like driving carelessly - pedestrians take a LOT of damage. And no, nobody has to put up with that sort of thing. Good for the head pastor, who may be doing the right thing, and who may just have a congregation that can't sing a capella.

Love it when homophobic comments are on KZbin because my personal favorite reaction is ‘ sorry honey you forgot the rainbows and glitter to that.’ It makes them so irritated most of the time that the comments can’t get to you.

This was a very difficult and courageous thing that Jason did, particularly as it meant "coming out" in front of the whole congregation. It is so much easier when you are a straight married person who can stand up, three sentences into a sermon about "unsuitable lifestyle choices", and say loudly "OK! I have heard enough! I am going to the Coffee Shop. Please feel free to join me!" and know that your actions provide an encouragement for the gay organist and his partner who will leave along with several other straight parishioners.

It's post 2012... maybe I'd just play Lady Gaga song... or P!nk song...and walk away. Many gays are monogamous and quite religious as well, and implying many good values in life and don't like war. If you think only the 'angel-types' are deserving the spot... how on earth the world going to be peaceful place anyway? No matter what religion it is. Some gay will turns str8, and some str8 will turn gay... it's an ever changing world. Just deal with it. Most head community of charity works are gay... so yeah, just deal with it. Which one is important... the suicide prevention community, or the sexual preference identification community. You do the math. I'm sick of those 'sanctimonious' who like to think only they deserve the after-life. We're in 2021. Peace☮

Love the video. I believe in The Trinity and I know that Yahweh loves me, Jesus died for me and the Holy Ghosts lives in me. Hating anyone God created is blasphemous. God lives you intensely. But Satan wants to destroy all of us.

Why do you hate Satan if it's blasphemous to hate anything that God created? You don't even understand how insane your belief is.There is no God and Jesus didn't even exist as a real person, it's all made up by humans who needed answers to all mysterious things they failed to understand. We have lot of answers now but you will not listen since you prefer to feel loved by ghosts.

Nothing wrong with wanting to feel loved. If this person is kind and accepting of others, then I’ve no problem with their faith even if I don’t happen to share it. If this person’s faith even helps them to be kind and accepting of others, then that’s all the better. Also, although I don’t personally think Jesus was the son of god or that he rose from the dead or anything, I’ve heard there is evidence he did actually exist as a man on this earth. It doesn’t bother me one way or the other, but you shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss his existence altogether.

@@genericname8727 Loved by a ghost is wasted, they miss the real love. If their faith make them good, they are not genuine good, they just act that way of fear and promised rewards. "I’ve heard there is evidence he did actually exist as a man on this earth" Yeah, I have heard that too and had no reason to doubt it until I checked those evidences. There are no evidences, just lies, the trademark of religions. But there are lot of evidences that the stories about Jesus are made up.

my folks are preachers, I'm the first born and I'm gay... whenever a gay related topic arises they tend to go into a fire rage... I remember the first pride parade our country had that year had a huge flood and earthquake and he blamed the lgbt community for bringing the "wrath of god" in the country... literally everyone was clapping and shouting "amen"... meanwhile I'm like the only one sitting with my arms folded, looking around thinking "dafaq? these people serious about life?" and I couldn't help but wonder how'd they'd react if they found I, their first born son is actually gay
