When I was 13 I found out that my 4th grade teacher was gay. And suddenly it made sense why every time a kid my class would ask if he had a girlfriend, he'd become flustered and say no, and every time a kid said he should get eHarmony to find a girl, he'd get mad, and every time he was asked why he was single, he'd legit not open up. It appeared that he was closeted for a very long time, but its heart warming that he's finally answered these questions. And with PRIDE.

@avery-s1e6 жыл бұрын
Adolfary Clitler then I’m happy ur proud of being white. Everyone should feel pride in themselves, regardless of race, gender and sexuality. It’s the fact that he felt ashamed of himself for so long that makes it an amazing thing for him to be proud of who he is. Everyone deserves to be proud of themselves.
@emperorconstantinexipalaio41216 жыл бұрын
Madds Ripper I don’t feel prideful about being white. It was an example. I’m prideful of who I am, not what I am.your race, gender, as sexuality isn’t who you are by the way. That’s my problem with modern liberals. You’re a representative of your race, gender, and sexuality. It’s not actually that black and white.
@avery-s1e6 жыл бұрын
Adolfary Clitler I fear we’ve said the same things. We can agree that race, gender or sexuality don’t completely define a person. Though I believe every person should be proud of what makes them, them. If being gay makes them fearful or ashamed, then clearly the better alternative is to feel proud. As with every person, feeling confident knowing who they are is a good thing, as you said, “feeling proud of who they are”.

Origami Help Desk What do you mean it has no place in a classroom? I can kind of get if you mean teachers talking about their love life (no matter who they’re dating) has no place in a classroom, but even then, it’s just like, why? So what if a teacher talks a little about their personal life? So what if a teacher is gay? Why does it matter? It’s not like the children are going to turn gay, it doesn’t work like that. Kids might start to realize they’re gay, but it was going to happen at some point in their life, so it’s not like it’s the teachers fault. He’s also not setting a bad example, he’s not setting an example at all. If a kid sees it, and then later in his life experiments with guys, but ends up being straight, then so what? Or if he ends up being something besides straight, then so what? As long as he’s not teaching them anything bad (the LGBTQ+ community is *NOT* bad) then it’s fine. Stop being a homophobe, maybe go educate yourself on gay people (and the whole LGBTQ+ community) instead of hating.

Alex I don't think you have anything to worry about. When I was in the 6th grade my science teacher was gay. (My school district is a bit different so 6th grade and below is elementary school and 7th up is high school.) He would refer to his husband by name and if someone asked he would explain. What I'm trying to say is at this point we were 11 and pretty immature but I must say it was handled quite well. When I found out on the playground it went down like this: "Hey did you know Mr. Name is gay?" *gasp "Really?" "Yeah. He showed us a picture of his husband and he is super cute" "Awesome. Hey what did you think of Mrs. DeBartolo's math test." Basically if 11 year old boys and girls who made sex jokes at the lunch table took it with no problem, I don't think you'll have one either. Young minds are super accepting. I with you the best of luck and I hope this helped calm your nerves a bit.

With primary school children, it's likely their parents are younger and more accepting. Plus young children really don't care!! In my secondary school, we have a gay science teacher and lesbian languages teacher, and tbh no-one could care less. If they ever ask, you'd be fine replying casually and honestly. To tell you the truth, the fact that my Spanish teacher is openly lesbian and no-one cares gave me the courage to come out to a few people in my class. By being completely honest about it, children would learn from a young age that it is nothing to be ashamed of. Anyway, wishing you the best of luck x

Relating to choir, there's a guy in the men's choir at my school who is trans, FTM. I'm in women's choir and he's actually the aid in there. My teacher is completely cool with it, calls him by his preferred name, and so does everyone else in the class. Though considering he's part of men's and an aid in women's, I have a hunch the school actually has him listed as an aid in MENS and a regular student in women's. But my teacher is awesome, whenever she mentions any of us dating, (I'll just use bringing a partner to an event as an example) she will say "you can invite your boyfriends or girlfriends or whatever" A student in the class also came out as trans in class, and admitted to being kicked out of church because of it. It was nice to see the response being basically "you do you, boo"

I’m 16, soon 17, and am trying to figure out what to do with my life. I’ve been through some heavy stuff and my teachers played a major role in getting through that, and the thought of giving back to the world by being that to another kid would mean so much to me. But I’ve been worried about how kids would see me if they knew I was transgender and gay. The trans part especially, is quite terrifying. But the end of this video gave me so much strength. Kids need to see someone being the same thing they are, and living a normal/happy/comfortable life.

Kovu is a unicorn But why are you transgender? The only thing that determines your gender are your chromosomes.

olli_suxx! I know about trans dysphoria. Sex and gender are the same thing. Discomfort? You are what you’re born as. You don’t have to fall under a stereotype to be a male or female. Shoving hormones down someone’s throat which could cause infertility and a higher risk of cancer is not the solution.
@mikerosoftpaint79066 жыл бұрын
Adolfary Clitler - You’re oversimplizing it. Not conforming to gender stereotypes or being discomforted by them is not the same thing as being transgender and dysphoric. A female comfortable with being female can present in masculine ways and that does not make them trans. Gender dysphoria usually involves body dysmorphia, which causes mild-to-severe discomfort with and/or downright hatred of the individuals own body that cannot be controlled. It’s not just a slight discomfort to being feminine/masculine. Transitioning allows trangender individuals to find comfort and be able to function better in society without hating themselves. If that person wants to transition for the better of themselves, they should be allowed to make their own choices and do as they please to make themselves euphoric with their body and gender, if they want to risk/don’t care about infertility and other risks, thats is a choice they are willing to make to not hate themselves. I’ve heard of transgender individuals who even couldn’t even look in mirrors without being highly stressed before they transitioned. It happens a lot. Happiness and comfort should be the most important to individuals so they can make sure they are safe and secure.
@emperorconstantinexipalaio41216 жыл бұрын
olli_suxx! Shoving hormones down someone’s throat isn’t the solution. It puts people who transition at many risks including cancer. This is because hormones make many changes as it is. When the consumption increases, regulators in the body can be switched off. Eventually, consistent consumption will cause uncontrollable mitosis. You know what that leads to. That’s putting it in simple terms. If you want to transition, please get a diagnosis and think about what you’re doing. Be responsible. Can we at least agree that transitioning can be risky?
@mikerosoftpaint79066 жыл бұрын
Adolfary Clitler - I know transitioning is risky, I never said it wasn't. What I said was trans folks who are diagnosed and transitioning understand the risks and if they are willing to risk it then they should be able to do so for their own comfort.

I had a gay teacher when I was a freshman. She was a great teacher and a very sweet woman. She committed suicide the following year. It was heartbreaking. My oldest daughter had a gay teacher as well and although she was clearly open outside of school, she never spoke of her partner or brought her to school functions. We lived in a small mid-Western town and it wasn’t accepted. We have since moved to a new location and my daughter attends a visual and performing arts high school. Things are SO DIFFERENT! This teacher is great. This is how it SHOULD be! I love that he’s encouraging dialogue and questions from his students. My youngest daughter is now a freshman and her science teacher is gay. He is open and happy and on the first day he has a slide show while introducing himself “This is my childhood home in Minnesota...These are my parents, Margaret and George... This is me winning the science fair in middle school... This is me graduating from college... This is my husband, Marco... These are our rescue dogs, Cher, Eliza and and Bette... This is our new house... Ok that’s me! Any questions?” He is a great teacher and SO warm and open with his students. I absolutely love him and so does my daughter and her friends and the school administration completely supports him.

I'll be honest, I don't like gays very much and it's for this very reason, because their gayness is made into such a big deal. I agree, we should all just be okay with it and move on. I hate sitting on the edge, half congratulating them, half annoyed at their expectation of a response. Really it's not a big deal and I feel like every ounce of energy I use pretending it is a big deal is a waste. We ought to stop pretending they just ran a marathon and just move on. It's really just another fetish when it comes down to it. It's like bragging about fapping on feet, yeah it might be a bit self deprecating to say it, but that doesn't really make it something to have a fucking party over. Anyway, that's just my opinion on the matter. I know that's not what was originally meant.

They will lead their lives in a hateful way like the role models they were given. What is there to be afraid of? Having a gay teacher won't turn your child gay. Alexia and I are 17 and seniors now about to go off to college. Your class is brought up very often in conversation with both our families because we remember how amazing of a teacher you were and it was the class that sparked a lifelong friendship between Alexia and I. We are so appreciative of you and you have impacted our lives in the most beautiful way. Thank you so much. P.S. thank you for not embarrassing us when we walked into the classroom an hour late because we didn’t hear the bell indicating that PE had ended. Adolfary Clitler because wether you want to admit it or not, it is still a big deal in today’s culture. There are still so many people who are hateful and disrespectful that coming out can be very difficult. If you struggled to keep who you really are a secret, when you finally let your true self show, yeah you are going to be dramatic. I was scared for my own safety to come out for so long. When I finally did come out, I wanted to scream it from the rooftops. They made a video about him because they wanted to show a story of a gay teacher coming out to his class. They aren’t telling every story, but telling this one story can make someone scared to come out fell much better. Hope that helps you understand!!
@emperorconstantinexipalaio41216 жыл бұрын
Corenagade What? I come out as being straight. Can I have a video now? Don’t see how, considering the media backs the whole LGBT wagon. Who really cares about hateful and disrespectful people? They always exist. I deal with them everyday. The classroom isn’t exactly a good place to do it as it may be a way to push morals upon children. Again, who really cares? Personally, I’m fine with this and gays, lesbians, and bisexuals but if someone feels differently, I have no right to make them change. I will debate them but not force anything.

Kids are extremely perceptive, and they take in all kinds of unspoken information about their teachers. That minimized the drama with the kids. I like his style.

I am over 60, so boomer times were different, but I remember a male teacher was fired from our elementary school. It was spoken about only in whispers. Parents were worried he would turn guys gay. I remember being really confused, because no one really explained anything nor were we allowed to ask questions. Kids know if it’s spoken about in whispers and adults get angry if you ask questions, then it’s something awful. All of the kids came away from that with mostly wrong ideas and that is a shame.

But back in 1976, it wasn’t the right time to let the students know. In fact when I retired in 2007, I wasn’t able to come out to the students. Most of them knew through their parents, but I knew it just wasn’t quite yet the time to let the students know for sure. If I was with my late partner/husband in public and a student came up to me, to protect me my husband would walk away like we just happened to be walking next week ciao there but didn’t know each other. I did share pictures of the two of us, But referred to him only as a friend. He passed away after 39 years together. He always honored my privacy with my students. But to this day I wish I could’ve been completely out with them. Two or three years later I could have done that. Ari's Moonlight that part of sex ed is never done right. Along with mental health issues. In my school sex ed is seriously lacking, and never taken as a serious subject, or we’ll have parents saying “they’re too young”. Tbh I don’t think kids in grade 5 are “too young” to learn about their own bodies, or a bit older kids learning about topics regrading the sexual aspect of life. Lack of education in sex ed leads to girls as young as 14 getting pregnant, or a talk about ones sexuality in a respectable and safe environment leads to suicides in kids part of the lgbtq+ community. As a pansexual myself, I’m scared that my friends will see me as disgusting or my classmates avoid me. My parents are homophobic too, so it makes it really hard to be open about my sexuality.

Good for you, those students are getting a very valuable education indeed, much more than just music. I'm thinking the persistent girl had an idea you were gay, and was very inquisitive. I'm glad you work in a supportive educational system, the sooner kids learn about various lifestyles, the sooner they will learn it is perfectly normal and develop tolerance. I'm sure there might be children you teach who are wondering about their own sexuality, even at that young age...Having you as a positive role model might help them accept themselves as well....If I can do one thing before dying, would love to help just one kid who is struggling with sexuality issues, would do anything to prevent a young person from years of needless struggling and self hatred...

As much as I love your comment and appreciate the sentiments you have expressed, I don't believe that being gay is a "lifestyle", as you have stated. Being gay is merely one characteristic or trait that, with many others, that makes up a person's life. It is not a lifestyle in and of itself.

Henry Strausbaugh It is. It’s forcing the moral that it’s okay to be gay. Listen, I personally think that it’s fine to be gay. However, others don’t think so, and accepting people for being gay isn’t a required way of survival. I agree that it’s good to teach people to be accepting. I just don’t think it’s in a school’s place.

My middle school choir teacher is gay. He’s the fucking best. One time this bi kid and this straight kid got in a fight cause the straight kid thought lesbian and bi were the same thing, me, a pansexual, stepped in, saying that bi and lesbian are completely different. Suddenly the gay choir teacher appeared basically out of nowhere and read out the definitions of lesbian and bi. Also everyone already knew he was gay so when he came out to everyone he said. “Yes, I am gay. I’m the gay teacher and I’m proud.” He is 22 and always wears a flannel shirt with a certain hair style. Again, he’s the fucking best.

It's totally fine if you have a husband!" But he wasn't gay he had a wife he just didn't want to share his personal life lmao but if he did have a husband I think everyone would've been like "Ya we knew" because he did act a little feminine, I guess, so I think when he said that he wouldn't tell us his partners gender we got even more suspicious XD.

Good to see this younger generation being more open and accepting. As a boy in school during the 70's -80's, you had to be homophobic, lest you be accused of being gay yourself. Back then an insecure boy raised catholic, (ex-catholic now) that seemed like a fate worse than death. I am not proud that I used to think and say things that were disrespectful and mean to gay people but the thing about ignorance is that it is curable if you will just start thinking independently. I like the Christopher Hitchens quote that "homosexuality is not just a form of sex, but a form of love and it deserves our respect".

My daughter, who taught in a 'Montessori ' private pre school setting, married a woman. Although another teacher recently showed the class her straight 'wedding pictures', she was told by the administrator she could not do the same. Her wife was allowed to visit, but only if she was referred to as a friend. While my daughter was not officially fired, it was very clear she needed to find new employment QUICKLY. So sad that this children had to lose a great teacher with whom they had bonded, over fear of intolerance.

Derek Williams - I do not see it as it is not ok to be of any letter of the alphabet, just that he seems to evade the answer. They feel that there is ambiguity and that he is not quite thrutful.
@DerekWilliamsMusic7 жыл бұрын
Michelle B - Yes, I got that impression too, but dealing with questions from children on such matters is extremely difficult and one has to respond with the utmost care. Having been in the same position as a high school teacher myself decades ago, it was a while before I figured out that the best approach to curiosity from students is to answer honestly any question that you'd also answer if you were heterosexual. For example, I can't see any reasonable heterosexual teacher being likely to refuse to answer a well-meant student question, "Are you married?" so I would answer such a question truthfully and immediately, without prevarication, in the context of my same-sex partner or husband. However if they tried to ask provocative questions about sexual practice, I would say to them, "I'll answer any question to the best of my ability, of the kind you'd be willing to ask your own parents."
@isisemkeb7 жыл бұрын

As a younger teen who is secretly genderfluid, I found that this video alone has given me so much more confidence when I comes to talking about stuff like this. Not only have I had the same type of rumor stuff happen like other kids being like "hey is she genderfluid?" And "is it ok to be genderfluid?" "What even is genderfluid" etc, it was really cool to find someone else who has shared a similar experience, and to know that everything turned out fine in the end. My story may very well be different than yours, but I still found it truly inspiring. It saddens me to know you probably won't see my comment, but if you do, thank you so SO much for putting your story out here for people like me, and so many more.
