I think it's because people associate religious people as moral authorities, as society we have been taught to just trust moral authorities. That's why a lot of sexual abuse in churches is treated with less scrutiny

It's funny too because that "moral authority" is always self-appointed by their respective religion. Anyone can claim anything about themselves. . . it doesn't make it true and often is used as a smokescreen for terrible behavior.

@@dudeofdixie How pervy that you think the only reason a person would support another person is for sexual favors. I guess we know where your mind is. 🙄 She talks about HER experience with the Mormon church. Other ex-Mormons have similar stories of abuse & coercion. If you think they're all lying, it's because you just *don't want to* believe it, not because the evidence isn't there.

❤ why is it ok for them to not leave you alone when you had your name removed from their church? Why is it ok for them to still send the missionaries when you have removed youself from their records? Isnt it bad enough that for 38 years they dictated EVERY MINUTE AND EVERY CHOICE in my life. So absolutely we can call them out.

It is good someone is speaking up over all matters of immorality and thievery and especially if it's in churches where it does not belong , period ! It does not matter whether it's in any matter of denomination , it's still wrong and needs to be dealt with promptly and with seriousness . Thank you for putting this out there for all to see . 🙂

Please make longer videos when you are up to it. I would loved to read your book. You have so many great points and experience to speak from. My nephew that I used to be very close with became Mormon at 16. I don’t think he even knows what he is getting into. I’m not saying being Mormon is a bad thing but I think he did it to fit in because all his friends are. I worry that impossible standards can be set up for these young people.

There are good people and there are much fewer bad people, the unfortunate outcome is that all religious people get tarred with the same brush. As a board member of a church if I found out any of the hypothetical scenarios happened, bear in mind some are illegal, some are frowned upon and some are just plain creepy then the appropriate action would be taken.

@lifetaketwo7662 that's interesting as a Christian I feel like modern society is hateful and toxic towards Christianity, and all that after western society was founded on the Christian principles faith, love and acceptance. For example in Australia, I can't speak to other countries positions, on one hand government is great Australian people, like Margaret Court based solely on her Christian views but on the other hand South Australia is happy for Muslims to hire stadiums and have gatherings. Fun fact, the state of how things are and are going is written in a book haha

I totally believe that you've been put through unacceptable and traumatizing things. I think a lot of us in churches still are just over the idea that it's religion that's the problem and not just that evil will find it's place anywhere. Evil people will naturally be more drawn to put themselves in religion for power, influence and for a facade that might cover for them. What bothers me is that so many will see that this stuff happens in churches and the same people will gaslight me about the crap I've been put through by other institutions like the medical community. Any time that people focus their energy on revering other people--- whether that be church leaders, celebrities, politicians, athletes, or doctors or even an idea like "The Science"--- instead of actually looking to the highest and holiest that deserves our very clear need & natural desire & inclination to worship, there will be huge problems. Those who understand that it isn't religion or any given church (or even any specific person, people or group of people) that is THE PROBLEM are more likely to get frustrated that the group we most deeply identify with is being called out as if it is EVIL. There is no excuse for what happened to you. It is shameful and those who did it as well as those who enabled have much to repent of. Please know that while many will get defensive about the church, you deserve at least as much protection as anyone else. And those truly wanting to protect the church will learn to protect it from the real threat, which are those who taint it by using it as a tool of abuse on the vulnerable. I hope you can find healing and forgive yourself for doing the best you knew how to. To know that everything you did with the best intentions, no matter how vulnerable it made you, speaks to the beautiful intentions of your heart. You obviously see the world differently now. You weren't lesser before. You were a victim. But a victim isn't a lower being. You weren't asking to be hurt. You didn't deserve it. I imagine you've realized these things, at least part of you has. And I am not asking you to stop talking about it. But just know that wrong things happened to you that you can't change. It's a much more glorious thing that you escaped them and didn't become part of them than maybe you realize. Maybe people are hearing there's still hurt. It's OK if it still hurts. It also doesn't have to hurt forever. But there's no deadline. You're allowed to grieve until you're done grieving. Your capacity for grief will increase your capacity for joy. Not that you deserved the things that brought you grief, but the grief is the deeply uncomfortable process of healing.

When it's systemic then it's not just a few bad apples. Most religions I know of are exclusionary, anti-science, patriarchal, misogynistic, authoritarian, and homophobic. Religion has positives like community and charity but the consistent abuse of power outweighs a lot of the benefits. Christianity especially with it's glorification of suffering and martyrdom and excessive forgiveness for abusive behavior leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'm absolutely better off without it.

There's a problem with your argumentation. Religions have a scope that exceeds the others. It can impact your personal life and your professional life. In some cases, a person's religious beliefs can be imposed on non-believers and even then, the religious will scream of persecution. Oh.. and when the victims come, they don't have rights. The victims will be dead and thus silent or they will be shamed by the heavy handed a-moralizing of the religious leaders. (Religiosity is not correlated to good. History is littered by the victims of religious people and religious ideas. the word good and evil really are too nebulous. Let's talk crime rates or abuse rates or death rates. You know.. hard numbers that can't be easily manipulated because they are real. Let's talk correlation vs. causation. Let's look at different societies and how problems are solved/mitigated.) In other disciplines, we build up protocols to minimize the dangerous elements. So we created mandatory reporters for example in education facilities. Hospitals build up best practices to reduce patient harm and they adjust and measure to optimize the goal of patient health. Restaurants have health and safety standards and random inspectors and yelp reviews. Where is that in the religious organizations? That external check to ensure the public good? That external check helps protect the worst elements in groups. Because it's a group level system design that is like traffic lights. Even the color blind will learn how to use this system. It is a way of protecting us from our own tendencies to blind belief and social networking. Higher education is another tool because the more you know, the harder it is to fool you. Scientific thinking (which is not waving a scientific paper) is a tool because it forces to doubt and test. Those are on the individual level. But the external check sum is the traffic light because people will make mistakes. The goal is to ensure that the mistake doesn't cause too much damage. Of course there are failures. But if we're going by failure rate, the religious have utterly failed. Don't go throwing stones because your glass house is already in shards.
