I thought they had restored the frescoes to their original splendor. The last time I was there, the whole place was decked out in scaffolding for what I thought was this purpose. I guess I misunderstood the English priest with whom I was talking.

Well restoration in Italy has the philosophy of only cleaning -- they don't replace lost colors. They don't want to obscure what is historic.

In the 9 times I have been to Rome since 1982, the majority of these churches I've never been to. I am hoping that in the not too distant future I can get back to Rome and really see the churches that pilgrims really never get to see. I normally come on a tour and we go to the usual churches, but I would like to be able to go to those churches that tourists really never get to see. There is one church I've been to a couple times that is near the Trevi Fountain. It has a miraculous image of Our Lady, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of it. Perhaps you might be able to include this church in another video if you should know the one I am talking about.

Just a guess but Sant'Andre delle Fratte might be the one you mean? ... where St. Maximillian Kolbe said his first mass. It's between Piazza Di Spagna and Fontane Di Trevi.

Yes, Sant'Andrea delle Fratte. It also houses the two angels by Bernini which were made for the Bridge of the Angels.

Do they ever celebrate mass here? How frequently is mass celebrated at these old basilicas in Rome?

Yes, there is a seminary here. It depends -- some have daily Mass, some don't.

Or sometimes the daily Masses aren't public.
