One of the big questions about Aikido, is why are the attacks so weird? In this video I show how to weird attacks will come up naturally if you have a weapon in your hand and you're trying to get away. Why does Aikido have such weird grabs- because those grabs fit the context of Aikido.

O'sensei's teacher, takeda sokaku always had a knife in his kimono wrapped in a towel. So he could get to a knife with his free hand and cut you. In that sense, the everpresent threath of an hidden knife the attacks and locks make a lot of sense.

LOL this does make sense. Though I have to say, the more I hear about Sokaku Takeda, the more I can't help but think the guy was a real asshole. I'm impressed Ueshiba came out such a nice guy at that rate.

Excellent, it is unbelievable how many people ignore these historical aspects. Your videos have to reach larger audiences in the martial arts world

The concept of potential/actual knife in Aikido is important for me in the role of nage, too. Just to imagine uke has a knife in the non-manipulated hand/side of his body potentially coming at me makes me much more aware of not presenting an opening and keeping up the dysbalanced state of uke at all cost.

When you use 取り alone, we pronounce TORI not DORI. It should be Tori waza not Dori waza. So an object Dori instead of an object Tori.

If someone's stabbing you because they want to get away maybe you should let them go?

Your approach is on the mark, you make it easy and simple to understand, giving the art respect . Much needed. There's alot of value in your approach! It's easy to over complicate.

I had originally surmised Aikido has bogus and completely fake for my very safety and non-jailable Nutritional needs ; but anyways nowadays you have detrained this superficial eye stare at us using OverNet consistently true.

Really great stuff. Sharing your years of analysis and experimentation across multiple arts in your quest for Aikido sanity, really comes across extremely well and congruent. Add to that the nice dude aspect and boom… much appreciated. If you’re ever in the UK, you’ll be more than welcome to teach a class at our dojo.

why not weapons first with disarms like filipino martial arts, we would understand aikido better and be more effective
@ChuShinTani
@ChuShinTani 2 жыл бұрын
Effective is relative to what you want to do. Aikido is not a knife combat system- It's a martial art of accords. These kinds of techinques represent the historical foundations of Aikido techniques.

@@ChuShinTani I meant swords as well as other weaponry. Not that it was just weapons , example the Filipino system the same techniques are used in empty hands like gunting etc footwork. Attributes acquired helps aikido empty hands like timing footwork. Aikido you show seam to be for both weapons and unarmed that Steven Seagal and I agree alot of "sword" in Aikido - I keep with what you say though because way more experience than I so I keep with your word

There are disarms in aikido. Search for "aikido tanto dori," for example. There are techniques for disarming opponents armed with swords, staffs, knives.

Why are you always pointing your finger at Josh, that's rude in general and especially in the dojo..?:)

@@michelgolabaigne595 definitely a social thing. Generally in the US pointing is no longer considered rude. There is a story that employees of Disney World are taught to point with two fingers because Walt Disney thought pointing with one finger is rude, so there is a history of such sentiment; but it is no longer widely observed within the States. It’s a good reminder for those practitioners traveling to foreign dojo to be more aware of social mores to avoid causing offense.

aal old jujitsu school have this wrist grab defense techs(and some of karate too)for the reason you explain.And I think IMHO the body/lapel grab defenses are for common attack in a culture of fighting with armor and practicing wrestling (jujitsu,sumo and then judo).like in the Western World the "bread and butter"defense was (and IS)against punches to the head-

So this is more of a "game" akin to medieval reenactments, not a martial discipline practical in real life situations.

Once again, when you add a blade into the mix, Aikido's methods become perfectly clear. In actuality, Aikido is a truly functional, very practical and efficient Martial Science. A specialized Blade Wielding Science for Samurai. Excellent video.

ok this is interesting. I originally thought the grabs were from someone trying to grab your weapon. I don't (normally) see any GI grabs or sleeve grabs or lapel grabs. but I believe they are there. This is clearly jujitsu. Can you comment on the third technique from this video? kzbin.infoYVVs5iwRea4
