Sparring with Aikido- for teachers! This video is designed with those who run a school or program who want to add sparring/live training to their practice. This is a two part series, this one covers kumiuchi, or struggle methods. In this I will show you three different practices that I have used to safely get my students sparring with Aikido technique. I have covered these drills before:
Starter 3 stage drill: • Starting live training...
Kaeshi Waza : • Live training Kaeshi ...
Hein's Six Stage Progression: • How to do Aikido Wrist...
These 3 Aikido drills will help you get started in a relatively safe manner. If you want to do the techniques of Aikido "live" here is how you get started!

This was so much fun to watch. I love that you work this up in stages, and allow free-flowing sparring/grappling like that. If I found an aikido dojo that did this in MN I'd train there in a heartbeat. Great points about bringing up bruised egos, and that none of us will ever be Steven Seagal.

I've studied Aikido for almost 20 years and always found that this was a problem, and because of it I had a real hard time finding 'Aiki' so I went and crossed trained in BJJ. The rolling really helped.

Excellent video, I've met so many egotistical Teachers, as I always tell my students, I'm just a student that knows the basics a little bit, if I get put on my ass, it means my student is learning, just like I am.

Sounds like a Zen koan , how do when . Don't let your ego bruise someone else. You may actually have the advantage but the uke doesn't give to protect theirself. You have to stop ,looking like you didn't have it even though you could have. Their body is more important than your ego.. Nice video nice practice

“Student injury” - I wish more people talk about it, like first how to recognize an injury when it happens. Sometimes, we tend to push through it and make it worse!

In the Aikido Classes that I took sparing was just Called RANDORI but we had at least Seven different kinds of RANDORI and the First Three were considered OPEN RANDORI because All Levels of Aikido Practitioners were allowed to Participate in these Types of Randori however the next Higher Levels of Randori's were Limited to the Abilities of each Member because they used LIVE STRIKES from Uki but Shitae (Tori) {Tori being a JUDO TERM} was Responsible for Protecting the Uki at all possible Cost because You can Easily be Placed Back into the First Three Types of Randori if you don't understand why you must provide a SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR PRACTICE but The next Two Types of RANDORI were GREEN BELT 7th Kyu and Above ONLY most 6th Kyu and 7th Kyu Participants couldn't Participate Safely and were sent Back to the First Level within Days of starting 4th Level Randori mostly because of the PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS to Finish the Full Two Hours of Training then the 7th Type of Randori was FULL CONTACT with both Uki and Shitae (Tori) attemting to interrupt the others Techniques and Waza Violently and Requirements for this Randori was 4th Dan Yodan and 5th Dan Godan and No Spectators Allowed in the Building During RANDORI CLASSES because they might be able to Distract the Participants of the RANDORI causing in justifiable injuries and Removal of the Participant that Caused the Injury for Lack of Self Control 😂 it was Simple if you Failed at Randori at any point You had to Start at First Level and Slowly Work Your way back up to the Next Level which could take MONTHS even YEARS if you happen to be YODAN or DAYS Away from the Achievement of 6th Dan Rukudan Allowing You to TEST Your Own Students without Supervision By Two Shichidan or Even Higher Rank Black Belts which meant you might have to Test Your Own Students at an 8th Dan Hachidan's Scheduled Testing Day if there is Room for Your Own Students at the TEST with Prior Permission from the Hachidan

1st Level of RANDORI Waza Kumae the unbalancment of Uki all Techniques are Practiced in Groups of 7 People and Tipping over Uki is the Goal with Proper Technique and Proper Ukemi Rolls & Falls with little effort and power involved Completely SAFE 🙌 no EGO and Non Violent

The 2nd Level of RANDORI is Kiai Kuzushi destabilizing and Throwing Uki without Power Concentration on Perfection of Techniques and Release Timing as a Focus of Shitae (Tori)
@keithcove154

The 3rd Level of RANDORI is Kiai Waza Tactfully Launching Uki into the Air using Each Aikido Technique at Random using CARE to Protect yourself and All Participants while Noticing any Variation of The Uki or Shitae within your Group that may cause Harm to themselves or other Groups in the Proximity of Your Groups Randori and Correcting it Immediately so People stay SAFE

The 4th Level of RANDORI I only made it to Twice but Involved No Warn Ups and Continued a Full Hour & a Half using everything Learned in the First Three Previous Levels of Randori Training and was Fallowed by Specific Technique Practice Concentration on The LAUNCH TECHNIQUES ONLY but Separated into Groups of Personal Abilities and Degrees of Tactical Control of each individual .... ALL OTHER LEVELS Required Black Belts Only No Exceptions And the FULL ACHIEVEMENTS of KENSHU ONLY ( All Kenshu Requirements mush be PASSED First ) KENSHU GRADUATES ONLY even if you have a BLACK BELT

I do recall Higher Black Belts discussing the 6th Level of RANDORI bringing LIVE SHARP WEAPONS but not always using anything but the BOKKEN and Wooden TANTO but there Being some Concerns about Using the Wooden Jo Against the LIVE KATANA and even Real Tanto Blades because of the Chance of Loose Weapons after Disarming Techniques They did have Two Types of Wooden Tanto one was normal looking and the Other was Longer but Cut the Point Off at the Tip of the Tanto

When I trained back in the day we would have killed each over if we tried this. Like it. think strikes have been take out of thing and this is a technical miss leading

Ego…hmm. I was looking for a new aikido school, and found one that checked off several boxes. Teacher seemed nice at first, but then it seems he felt the need to assert his dominance to this new student. He deliberately hurt me twice, and I’m a very nice, helpful, athletic, normal guy with allot of tolerance. I was shocked. Needless to say. I left that night and never went back. Ego rule #1 should be “Don’t be a dick”.
