For the red-head girl, the sneaky smart one who died from poison berries... earlier in the training moments we see her on a large scale computer identifying "symbols" it looks like. What she is actually doing is identifying plants (edible, poison, medicinial, etc,) and she is very good at it, so the theory is that she found nightlock berries and, for whatever reason, decided that she would rather unalive herself than risk going down under the brutality other players like Cato.

To be fair, nightlock wasn’t in the training center and is only found in district 12, and it just showed her matching the symbols not necessarily identifying the berries. She saw Peeta collecting them and assumed they were safe because she was “emancipated” as Katniss described her.

Fun fact (well actually moreso horrifying fact), in the books the mutts at the end were actually made from the DNA of the Fallen tributes, to the point that they wondered if the eyes of the mutts were the real eyes of the tributes. They also had collars with district numbers. They made them more dog like in the movie

Rue's death makes me cry every time. For the group of kids who ban together, those are usually the kids from District 1 & 2 and they're called "career-ers" (and yes, they wait until they're the last ones alive then go their separate ways once they need to fight each other) Those two districts actually have special academies where certain kids are trained from the time they're little, then when they're 18 they volunteer as tribute. It's an interesting bit of worldbuilding because even though at first glance it seems like a horrific thing for the adults of that district to do, kids from those districts end up winning a majority of the games. So it presents the question- is it more humane to let your kids die year after year with no training to limit your own complicitness in these atrocities or kinder to essentially brainwash a few well-trained children into sacrificing themselves when they have the best chance of potentially winning (at 18 instead of 12 like Rue or Prim) even if that means you're playing along with the Capital's bs?

One thing to add to this is that Districts 1 and 2 are relatively much wealthier than the other districts with industries based around manufacturing luxury goods and weapons, while somewhere like 12 (where the main industry was coal mining) was very very impoverished. So Districts 1 and 2 simply had more money to establish things such as these training academies whereas districts like 12 simply lacked the resources.

It's not just a matter of choice but a matter of resources. People in District 1 and 2 are more privileged, so they can better "afford" to train their kids. Meanwhile, people in the other districts are worked all day, so they don't have the time or the resources to train. Katniss wasn't even supposed to know how to use a bow because she no one was allowed outside the gates.

Basically the 3 fingers raised is a symbol of respect from district 12. And every time someone wins the games they become mentors to the next chosen children, Haymitch is the only mentor of the District 12 because he was the only winner up until that point

So one thing about the adults in the districts, they take pity on those who are 12-18 on the day of the Reaping. This is because they were the ones lucky enough to survive the Reapings while watching friends and classmates and brothers/sisters die. They understand the fear they have towards the event. Especially because the last person to win the games before that was Haymitch and that was 24 years prior to this movie. That’s why the old lady was so willing to give the Mockingjay pin

In the book they explain that you can trade more entries in the bowl for a little bit of food. So the poorer people (they're *all* poor) are way more likely to get picked for the games because they need the food and they're desperate.

What I love about Hunger Games is how well it aged. I've read a whole lot of YA when I was the target demographic and a lot of it falls flat the older you become and the more you analyze it (doesn't mean it's not a worthy genre though, as well as any other). But the more I think about the Hunger Games the better it becomes, even reading it at almost 30 a second time the prose is brilliant and Ms Collins doesn't pull any punches for her teen audience. I have some critique of the movies, but they are still a well made adaptation
