Cain: ah, finally the sweet release of death! Five minutes later revives as a perpetual or saint. Cain: fucked ballocks!
@jackmack41817 ай бұрын
Cain is in his “realm”, he knows it well because this place existed in his mind. To his left an expanding void, to his right a massive wall. This wall isn’t exactly a wall but a massive plaque that expands to the sky. On it holds names of soldiers, citizens and people Cain has met in life and in this new one. Some are new, freshly carved, some are warn away to obscurity. So with grunt and a heave, he climbs the wall, using the names as handholds and footholds. He climbs for what feels like hours and minutes, he climbs so high can’t see the floor nor the top. Cain climbs till he finally reaches the top and the top before a glowing gate, he finds a statue. A statue of the only man Cain ever trusted, holding his coat, gun, sword and cap. The statue is remarkably clean for in life the man was a mess. As Cain dons his wares, he gives the statue a caress on its plaque. “Gunner Jurgen, the only man who I could ever trust in life”. With a sigh, Cain straightens his cap and makes his way to the glowing portal. Mouthing out an old saying that his aide said a many times “the emperor protects”

One thing I love about Ciaphas Cain books is how he describes the techpriests doing their rituals on the machines. I remember 2 moments in his series thst made me laugh 1: he describes how the techpriest chant the rites, use inscense and bless the machine to activate…only to the kick it or bash it for some kinetic persuasion. 2: in another series he’s either in a ship or building where there’s a many cables strewn about the floor, he considers them a tripping hazard and shock hazard. He then mentions how a few tech priest were working here and getting shocked multiple times but didn’t even flinch and he dreaded to think they actually enjoyed if.

One moment that I always liked is actually a footnote where Vale (who actually has access to Cain's official academic records at the Scholastica) actually debunks Cain's claims that he was a horrible student by bringing up that according to the paper trail and his actual teachers he earned average scores in his classes while being near the top when it came to physical training. This implies one of three things: 1. Commissar academic standards are much worse than Cain thinks they are. 2. His imposter syndrome is so bad that he's retroactively applying it to his student years 3. Cain really is "brilliant but lazy" because he still got average scores without any kind of studying or effort put into the academic side of his training, instead hyper focusing on the physical side.
@sinbotosimmons76247 ай бұрын
He also is stated to have a clean record. Which is then followed by the statement that this less likely due to him being a model student and more that he was very good at not getting caught.

@bogustoast22none25Ай бұрын
Well, it's also a sign that his imposter syndrome has ALWAYS been there. He has an idea of what a Commissar is supposed to be, and if he was leading a two-[ronged life of "I don't want to be in the front lines, I want to be sitting back and relaxing" and "A Commissar has to be [insert expectation here, here, here, and here] and I'm nothing of that" it would make him see himself as a failure, because he COULD have been all those things academically speaking, but he wasn't. So it isn't that the Standards are worse, more so that in his mind, he wasn't reaching them, thus a failure.

The best thing about him is that he's legitimately extremely competent. He flies by the seat of his pants a lot, but he has remarkable leadership skills, and great tactical/strategic acumen. It also cannot be stressed enough how good of a duelist he is. ---Spoilers--- Such as the time a psyker cultist attempts to assassinate him in broad daylight. The psyker is completely invisible/silent, and infiltrates an Arbites building, and goes to stab Cain while his back is turned. Cain detects fucking movement in the air, instinctually realizes that there's a blade headed for him, and immediately draws his chainsword and parries the blow. He then fights against an invisible enemy, repeatedly parrying blows entirely by instinct, and instantly decapitating the psyker when Jurgen nears and causes the invisibility to FLICKER. Man is an actual beast, he just has imposter syndrome and actively attempts to downplay all of his achievements (which ironically makes people like him more because they think he's being humble)

Cain is EXTREMELY smart and insightful, not just in strategies & tactics, but also in social etiquettes and functions. He always knows how to appear powerful, humble, and suave, and always knows how to read the room to say the right things, not just to impress people, but to get himself out of the danger he perceives to be immediate (lol). But this also serves as a very nice contradiction to Cain's obliviousness to others' opinions of him. He doesn't think others would care if he dies, while in fact after the vox signal notifies everyone that the commissar down, several Guardsmen immediately leaves cover to help Cain, meaning that the 597th shits their pants and zerg-rushes to save him as if he was carrying their colors. Vail notes that morale will plummet if anything happens to Cain, but he just refuses to acknowledge it. He's also unaware that the crazy hot busty doll that he's been smashing for weeks were trying to marry him, until she outright told him so. Also, Sulla has a huge crush on Cain, but Cain is just so blind to it he couldn't notice it. Cain's also insanely grounded. He always talks about Lord General Zyvan with the tone of an underling trying to please his superior to enjoy Zyvan's foods and drinks, but in a book, he casually mentions that if circumstances force him to, Cain CAN shoot Zyvan where he stands. It's just the mountains of paperwork and the fear of being shot by his men in the back that dissuade Cain. He's just that normal and sensible.

Cain can definitely smell Jurgen and does NOT appreciate his unique bouquet. He's just gotten used to it. Also, he appreciates it a lot, that Jurgen does what he is told and is ready to do his paperwork for him. Cain not only wins though luck, he is one of the best (human) swordsmen of the segmentum, an excellent shot with his laspistol, as well as quickwitted, observant, with a good grasp of tactics and strategy. He is also diplomatic and charming and can keep the bigger picture in mind. Jurgen is an absolute badass and funny as hell when he unintentionally annoys people or intentionally uses the gaps and contradictions created by his dual status as a commissar's aide and a normal solider to ruthlessly stonewall anyone who tries to come into Cain's office without a good reason (from his pov). A downside of the books is, that there's no real tension. Caiaphas Cain will always survive, so will Jurgen, and usually they win. Some interesting trivia to add on: - Cain knows refers (at least in the early books) to most of the soldiers of the Valhallan 597th by name, implying that he actually learned their names. - In his later years, when he taught commissars at the academy, he tried to impart his wisdom on how not to accidentally fall seventeen times on his own bayonet to the next generation, making a contribution to more effective commissars.

If it were me, I'd be praying, "Please, just die for real this time" because as if i want to deal with the imperium many paperwork. Cain’s true super power throughout the books and all of his various bowl emptying adventures isn’t that he’s one of the greatest human swordsman to have ever lived (rivalling your average Space Marine) nor his incredible charisma and ability to talk his way into or out of anything with reasonable ease. It’s his common sense. Cain is the only person in the 41st millennium who is able to see past the propaganda of the imperium and actually get to the core of what it is to be a human, which allows him to have these breakthroughs that are so obvious to us in our modern day but totally lost in the Grim Darkness of the future. Of course if you treat the troopers like they’re people instead of cannon fodder they’ll respect you more, if you try to apply tactics that ensure your survival you’ll probably live, and when people see you surviving they might try and emulate you. That’s what I truly love about Cain, for all of the fantastical people in 40k who do all these bombastic things, sacrifice so much and do so many things…Cain is just us. And it shows us that we can be heroes too, as long as we can use our common sense.

My favorite Cain fact is the meta one about the book covers being propaganda posters as he is often depicted with a bolt pistol when he uses a laspistol, Jurgens inaccurate Melta weapon design like a machine gun, and how his covers never depict him doing the things on the cover though 100% look like what they would be willing to show an imperial citizens.

Really enjoyed your video about Ci-Ci-Ciaphas Cain, Hero of the Imperium. The Cain books are my favorite series in 40k, followed by the Eisenhorn books. Raising a cup of Tanna Tea up in honor of Ciaphas, and the lovely Amberly. Also, if enjoyed the Cain books, then I would recommend the Flashman series by George Macdonald Fraser. Not sci-fi, but a similar type of character to Cain, if a bit darker and in the British Empire. Thanks again for the fun video.

At this point I would like to think that Cain is what the Emperor view humanity would be if his plans to elevate humanity in a higher psychic race actually works back in Horus heresy era.

My favorite Cain excerpt is when he was fleeing from an ork horde on an ice world and lead their vehicles over a frozen lake which causes the lake ice to shatter and the orks to go under. It was recalled as something like “what appeared to be the commissar fleeing was in fact actually a brilliant feint to lure the Orks in to a trap. His bravery and brilliance is to be praised.“ Also a side note, I believe, genuinely, that Amberley Vale is the best written female character in 40k.

Why Cain is considered most blessed by the God Emperor? Perhaps out of all the humans in the grimdark universe, He is the most "human" of them all.

Ok so slight misconception. The only reason he was dragged out of retirement during the 13th Black Crusade is because Perlia, his retirement planet, was attacked by a Chaos fleet affiliated with Abbadon. He successfully lead the defense of the world, even slaying the Chaos Lord at the head of the fleet himself, but he didn’t join in the fight on Cadia or at the larger Cadian Gate. From my knowledge, Cain never left Ultima Segmentum in his entire life and officially (with the Inquisition who knows) died of OLD AGE at around 200+ years old. That’s why I kind of don’t want him to be alive. This man fought every enemy the galaxy could possibly throw at him and died of natural causes. Absolute mad lad

If you look at Cain from the Imperium side, he should've been shot on the spot. If you look at Cain from his accomplishments, he's one of the most competent people in the galaxy. Get this man his tanna. Now that I think about it, from their first meeting onward the lord general gets some tanna for Cain every time they spend time together even though no one on his staff likes it at all. The lord general respects Cain to that degree. Also how the hell does he go against a patriarch (you know those scary things from Deathwing?) and 2 separate hive tyrants in melee and still walk away? The 11 books I've read had my jaw dropping at the power scaling of what he faces. Like when a space marine who doesn't really respect humans saw him as a worthy sparring partner and friend. They also respected Jurgen when people usually don't even acknowledge him at all which was a nice touch.

He's just a lucky anime character like Hercule Satan, King, and Tylor. If these men teamed up their combined luck would instantly destroy all threats in the universe.

when people say tere is no good guys, when i look at characters like Cain, I realize that is not true on an individual scale that is. On a faction scale everyone is evil, but on an individual scale some of the indivudals are good.

Canonically the Schola Progenium, where Cain grew up, is a pretty fucked up place as well. I mean, to begin with it's basically the most prestigious school in the entire Imperium, but they only take in the orphans of notable people who die in service to the state. And then they drill the ever loving shit out of them, this place is like a Japanese university crossed with boot camp that aims to output exclusively special forces. Their tagline actually makes them a slight bit more lenient than a Japanese high class university because it's really hard for a good Imperial citizen to wash out and fail, because there is only one way **to** fail and unlike what you might assume, dying isn't it. If you die you are not considered to have "failed", you're just dead. Nah, the only way to fail is to not follow orders unquestionably. The Commissar track is especially fun since we know that they literally watch the classes to find out which students are friends with each other, and at some random point the instructors are just going to hand you a pistol, point at your best buddy and then go "Kill that guy and make it snappy." Yeah, Cain being mentally fucked up and believing himself a failure is NOT strange at all. The aim of the program is to make every commissar into a highly trained warrior, proficient with any weapon he might come across, capable of inspiring the forces around himself by essentially having media training and charisma enough to appear unphased by any situation, and most importantly **lack any concept of fear or attachment** but being trained in its use. These people basically go through training from hell to be the gun toting, parade perfect, unflinching psycho yes-men of the Imperium, so it's entirely understandable that Cain, being a skilled duelist with admirable survival skills that genuinely cares about people would see himself as a failure. Because he is the Commissar that the Imperium SHOULD want, but he isn't the one it currently wants.

Love the Cain books. Just need to ask which one is it where they pull the Titan fall? I keep hearing it referenced but never see the book name. Also slight spoilers she's My 2 favorite moments have to be when the tech marine was having a sparring match with him and he managed to land a blow on the Marine. And when a hive fleet shot his transport down and passed out with a concussion but the 597 right like crazy to recover him and save his life.

The one time I know he passed out was during the same campaign he had to help Amberley track down the Shadowlight. It's in the 5th novel I believe. A frag missile (allegedly fired by a soldier from local planetary defense force, whom purity from genestealer has been vouched by local battle sisters) somehow landed near the vehicle he rode in, toppling it down, while at the same time he also had inhaled some noxious gas from tyranid attack that bounced off the vehicle armor plating. He fell unconscious from both concussion and minor poisoning. The 597th valhallan squad that happened to accompany him at that point was led by none other than Sulla, so yes, they rushed to rescue him. He only passed out completely when the squad managed to catch up with him and helped clear the incoming horde of tyranids that were about to engulf him and Jurgen.
