Hello Mark and my fellow bass players and musicians! Mark- I am truly honored that you took this on, and i'm beside myself that Lil’ Joe Raposo is among the folks who suggested you react to this song. It’s such a humbling experience to be among the players you’ve highlighted on this channel and I couldn’t be more grateful. I figured I’d stop by to talk about this song a little in case anyone is interested! So I’d known the Cigar guys for awhile before being asked to play with them; the drummer Jon and I have worked together for ages on other music and had especially built a musical brotherhood in our other trio EV Kain. When he approached me about doing some work in Cigar, I had no frame of reference for skate punk as I missed the genre entirely when I was younger. I knew more about hardcore and ‘classic’ punk rock (and I’ve long worshipped Minutemen and NoMeansNo), but I knew nothing about skate punk. Jon and Rami gave me exactly two reference points: the first Cigar album “Speed Is Relative” (with the incredible Jason Torbert creating the bass language for this band), and RKL’s “Live In Berlin” album/video. Both recordings blew my mind wide open. So these are my stylistic template. -this song's working title was 'CigaRKL' as the whole point was to be a tribute to the masters and every musical choice was made with them in mind. -the bass was recorded last and with both band members and producer Darian Rundall there for every decision of every phrase as we tried to make it as crazy as possible. Haha. -I played it all fingerstyle and I actually had to tune the G string up in order to punch in a few notes I didn’t have enough frets to create (I have to use a pitch shifter pedal to play those notes live). -in addition to RKL, I had people like Cliff Burton, Billy Sheehan, Juan Alderete and Rush in mind at other points in the writing of the bassline. -we intentionally went for a raw and borderline out-of-control approach in both the playing and production of this particular song; the rest of the album is slightly more refined, but we felt this one needed to feel more ‘live’ and chaotic. -that said, the concept of actually playing this thing live wasn’t taken into consideration enough by me while constructing and recording it. 🤣 -one of these days I’ll make a play-through video and pick it apart a little. In the full circle nature of life, we couldn’t be more excited to be hitting the road with the reformed RKL coming up; truly one of the biggest honors imaginable for us. Hope to see some of you there! And in the great tradition of this channel, I’d like to make a couple of requests for Mark to add to his list for future reactions…I hope (in addition to so many other members of this community) that you take a look at Jason Torbert’s playing on the first Cigar album at some point. Truly masterful bassline writing and execution. I’m trying to do him proud with everything I do in this band. In terms of further punk bass pursuit, I nominate Dylan Samore’s work with the band Ninjas With Syringes for perusal…maybe the song Nightingale would be a good starting point? He is an incredibly musical and melodic player with really interesting ideas and a perfect sense of composition within his bass role IMO. And also, I think a look into what some call ‘brutal prog’ could be very enlightening…this scene is my personal bread and butter, and I challenge you, Mark, to check out the legendary Japanese bass/drums duo band Ruins. I’ll nominate the song ‘Djubatczegromm’, and I look forward to your thoughts on that!!! Thanks again to anyone who checked this out and Mark- keep up the stellar work on this channel!!! Cheers!

Love this comment haha. My first show was Pennywise, Mad Caddies and Stretch Arm Strong when I was 14. The feeling of getting picked up off the ground and later having my shoe handed back to me in that circle pit had such a huge effect on the person I became. It was around that time that I got my first bass and Bro Hymn gave my newbie, no skill friends and I the feeling of making music with a band.

I'm so glad that Cigar have been getting so much attention with their new album, and that this has led to Speed is Relative getting re-appraised. They don't have a massive catalogue, but both of their albums are incredible from start to finish. All 3 of those guys go hard, but especially their drummer and bassist. Their stop/starts are so tight, and their bass lines are always so melodic and fast.

This style of 90's SoCal Skate Punk is how I eventually got into metal. When I first heard Thrash it clicked how influenced by Thrash this style of punk is. Being a punk kid that had never listened to metal I didn't have a point of reference for double time Skate Punk when I first heard it. I eventually went back and did a deep dive of Thrash and now I'm a full on metal head that rarely listens to punk if ain't being played as fast as it can possibly be.
