Looks real good Plowboy! I just got done refinishing those “red” grips on my Uberti .44 cap and ball. I stripped the red factory varnish and that revealed a nice walnut grain pattern. Stained it and put some coats of oil on it, looks great. The Italians know how to make a gun, as well as salami.
@plowboysghost5 жыл бұрын
I figured I'd be refinishing these, but these are like the stock on my 1873 rifle. Yeah, they're reddish, but I can see grain beneath the finish and it doesn't look as bad as I thought it would.

Remington New Model Army was produced 1863-1875. 1858 is a misnomer. A lot of people incorrectly refer to that model as a Remington 1858 because of the patent date stamped on the barrel. I share your admiration of that particular model.

The only part on this one that color is the breechplate...but then my understanding is that the frame of this is forged.
@Prowbar5 жыл бұрын
Yes, Uberti uses forged frames. By the way, I hope you get around to ado another percussion revolver video sometime, with some shooting and loading. I'm also trying without wads and grease, but the Swiss powder I use leaves a very hard fouling in the chambers, making it impossible to seat a conical unless a grease cookie is used. Said it once said it a dozen times, love your videos plowboy. How's that longer barrel? Guessing it helps with the recoil and accuracy?
@plowboysghost5 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate the kind word. I'm a big fan of the full length, longer barrels on these reproductions. If nothing else, the longer sight radius should be conducive to greater inherent accuracy. As a fan of blackpowder .45 Colt cartridges, too, it seems that the longer barrels really make better use of the powder charge...with what seems like dramatic improvements in power. ...might be just a perception, but it's real enough to me. The extra weight toward the front of the gun does probably help with recoil, as well.

@plowboysghost nice. I've just started reloading. Have been exploring...
@ValcoBayrunner3 жыл бұрын
Have you chronographed that load ? Hornady reloading manual lists 7.9 grs Universal as max load for 900 fps. Im reloading for a conversion cylinder I ordered and it says keep velocity below 900 fps. For a 255 gr bullet 7.0- 7.4 grs would be 800-850 in range. Im thinking you have, but I want to preserve by barrel. I also own a 480 Ruger like you have which brought me to your channel. I loaded up some Speer 325gr Deep Curl bear bisquits for it over W296. Enjoyed your reloading video on that cartridge.
@plowboysghost3 жыл бұрын
You've probably noticed that reloading manuals are inconsistent. I've taken my load from John Taffin articles, Brian Pearce, and several others. I've seen 7.8-gr listed as "Cowboy Max", but I'm not loading for cowboy action level. This gun isn't a real conversion. It's built as a .45 Colt cartridge gun, and can handle all SAAMI spec .45 Colt loads....just like my Colt clones and my Schofield clone. 8.0-8.5-gr is still standard pressure (Tier I) with a 255-gr cast bullet. Brian Pearce has 8.5-gr of Universal as a Tier I (14,000 psi) load and running 935 fps out of a 5.5" barrel with a 255-gr Lyman bullet. With a 260-gr Lyman Keith bullet, he has 9.0-gr of Unique running 937 out of the same gun...still Tier I. An old 'proverb' I've read for a long while now claims that 8-8.5 gr of Unique or Universal is about the (velocity) equal loading to the original 40-gr blackpowder load...which can run 1000 fps from a 7.5 revolver. That's probably pretty close to right. I've shot a lot of 7.5...and had unburnt powder/poor performance. I worked up to 8.5 and shot a lot of them, but settled on 8.2-gr of Universal. Now, that's all I have loaded up...about 1100 of them. All my .45 Colt revolvers and my Uberti '66 carbine eats it just fine. Those are, of course, all built as cartridge guns. I would probably step back to 7.8 (+ -) for a conversion cylinder

By standard hand loads, I assume these aren’t restricted to cowboy loads only…correct? Thanks in advance and helpful video! Looking to pick one up in a week or so. Keep it up man!
@plowboysghost2 жыл бұрын
Correct. Uberti built cartridge Remington Army models like this are built for cartridges from the factory, and are proofed as any Italian cartridge gun in that caliber is.....for a steady diet of standard pressure .45 Colt loads. Like their Colt "conversions"...this isn't really a cap and ball conversion. It's a cartridge gun made to look like a conversion.

I've been studying on this and my current thoughts are that Colt hasn't taken a position against AR's being available to the citizenry, but instead has made a business decision based on supply and demand. Colt has plenty of AR's built and in stock, more than the market is demanding, while their military demand is still strong. I figure they've shifted their focus, perhaps temporarily, to the more lucrative side of their business.....with so many companies making cheaper AR's than Colt can produce and sell.
