It's kind of amazing how Konami, knowing full well how important card advantage is in Yugioh by this point, went "Yeah here's a mechanic that casually lets you go +5 every turn but you won't be able to set it up until late in the game!" then a year later they just hand us a deck that can set up that condition turn 1 and now decks have to somehow contend with a full field literally every turn.

That was the same for Link monsters. We believed the mechanic would slow down the game because they weren't releasing a lot of links with generic materials (see the existence of Linklebell). Then at some point everything went out the window. Konami wants their new mechanics to get popular, so they always end up removing the limiters in a crazy way.

In the OCG, PePe had access to Shock Master. Also, they could make Ptolemaeus and rank up into Azathot on the opponent's turn. This was only legal for a weeks, but it was legal. Call Spells with Shock Master, then use Ptolemaeus to go into Azathot and lots of decks suddenly had problems. If you value a negate, you could just go into Cyber Dragon Infinity instead.

I know this makes me another misplay andy, but this series is for historical and educational purposes and I prefer accuracy in situations like these so I'm making these notes. G1: Monkeyboard doesn't go to grave when popped by Ogre. It was already face-up. Ignister Prominence only pops to spin a card. The summon is free AND it summons in Def position. It was game with Trapeeze + double attack Ignister anyways though so it didn't matter. G2: Lizardraw does not go to grave. G3: You cannot summon Fusion, Synchro, or Xyz monsters using Luster Pendulum as material except Dracoslayer monsters. There was no line to get to Infinity + Rafflesia with Joker, Luster, Trick and Sorc which changes how Joseph's entire turn was played.

PePe will always be the best Pendulum deck. The one which every other Pendulum deck wants to imitate. Even something like the 2018 Dark Pendulum FTK wasn't really Pendulum as much as it was just a burn deck which synergized with a lot of Pendulum cards such as Supreme King Starving Venom & Electromite to copy that Lyrilusc Fusion to burn for game. All Fusion decks need a Shaddoll Fusion, just like how all Pendulum decks need a one card scales such as Monkey Board. In addition to a Stratos and everything floating into advantage when popped in the PZ. Because of this Pendulum never sees play besides being close to Tier Zero. It's either BROKEN or broken.
@arobnugzo6818
@arobnugzo6818 Жыл бұрын
True. I wouldn't say Pend has to be broken or unplayable tho. Qli was a fine stun deck even without Towers (stun variants), Dinomist had some tops back then as a rogue option, both being much different than PePe. Endymion is similar I suppose, but was never truly broken and stayed a solid tier 2 in TOSS imo. Zefra, especially with Yang Zing, had a much more fun game plan with a solid go 2nd plan (Baxia turbo). None of which broke the game and were quite different than build thousand negate pass.

-The "Pot of Greed" play after resolving pendulum sorcerer was often considered to be 'noob bait' since it leaves you open to being blown out by wavering eyes. Since the 3rd and 4th effects are the REALLY devastating effects, most top players absolutely prioritized clearing their scales. -Also in game 2, the scale effect of Pendulum Sorcerer is mandatory while the on summon effect is optional. The pendulum sorcerer in scale would have been destroyed by the one on field before it's attack boost effect would resolve -Game 3, Luster Pendulum can't be used as XYZ or Synchro material for Non-Dracoslayers. It didn't matter because the solemn strike is what won the game, but still for future episodes since I'm sure you'll be using these cards for a little while here

It's interesting finally seeing this deck after hearing so many people talk about it. So much of what I heard was "oh, this deck can search anything so they always have setup for next turn and any monster you kill goes to the extra and just gets summoned back", and the thing I realized is that, in addition to that, if you don't have a way to stop them this deck can also just kill you immediately.

i honestly think that in a pendulum format like this, the dracoverlords are cracked while in the scales, vector negating your opponent's scale effects and lector negating your opponent's pend monster effects while they are in the scales can shut down decks like this, and you're still able to pend summon 4s while you have both in the scales
@toadallynoodle5414

Ah PePe format. The last format I played before my 6 year hiatus from Yugioh. My last event was the Chicago (Rosemount) Regional with a large attendance. I brought Deskbot (Which IS a deck I'd love to see brought up in History of Yugioh) and made Top 32, 2-0ing every Kozmo that I faced that day as Deskbot 004 kind of just beats the entire deck when they don't have removal present. Funny how that works. Only losses from that day were against 2 PePe players, and there was a D/D/D deck as well as a Tellarknight that I faced at the end which was odd. Infinity Turbo can get you that far apparently. Despite it being considered a Tier 0 format, with the plethora of removal traps available, there was a good amount of back and forth, as well as deck variety that was happening and I appreciated that.

Hat was very intertractable they play moral tech and you could play any deck in hat format that makes a rank 4s constant and a bunch of traps your can grind through. You have to put all your resource in djinn so you could draw out the out. I give you wind up format it was a modern day format back in but Dino rabbit tended to bricked. Even vanity wasn’t as game changing as it would be now. So the reason I bring this up because of the way decks are built now. For a long time it was put all your eggs in one basket and if you crack the board you win. But the issue is if you can’t if I can’t crack it it get mega punished because the game is over turn 3. I guess I am more complian about the lack of opportunity there is game and the speed of it even tho turns take like 20 minutes. Actually don’t have as much of a problem with tear. Even tho I don’t play as much as I used to.

@@mo-hunnit9184 the point of my comment was to highlight how 99% of yugioh's competitive decks boil down to not letting the opponent play It doesn't matter if it's by using the words "negate", "banish", "destroy" or whatever, it doesn't matter if it's by setting 5 or comboing for 15 minutes There are very few exceptions, something like the dragon rulers with their double dracosack board come to mind, or qli with towers and those knightmare link decks that'd just co-link all knightmare monsters and end on a protected board with minimal interaction But these types of decks are way less common

It has one of the most solid draw engines in the entire game, which is fun. Also here is a recommendation, try to adapt the Ariadne build with 2023 format things, there is a lot of cool stuff you can do with that

I think the deal with opponents randomly picking being a thing has its roots in gambling. A skilled person can in fact follow your cards as you shuffle your hand around, and can intentionally snatch cards you searched for.

I remember plaything through this time period and being relieved when we got the adjusted banlist. Then they let everything go to hell with ABC and Metalfoes until it completely devolved into Zoodiac and we never got the reprieve we needed like we did with this.

I starting collecting and playing yugioh again with BOSH. Freshman year of college, having no idea what modern yugioh was about. I was so dumb, stubbornly refusing to play Pepe because the cards looked silly. Funny memories.

"Plushfire no once per turn on this" I mean, specifically the pendulum effect literally is a HOPT. Not that it matters for how it is used and abused.

I know this was probably not obvious to see but I think alex in both the first two games (especially in game 2) should have always scaled two pendulum monsters and THEN activate monkeyboard, so that if joseph had ghost ogre he could use wavering eyes and still profit off monkeyboard in some ways. The deck takes a bit of skill to actually pilot it well trough handtraps/wavering eyes and optimizing the endboard, I'd love to see at least another episode with this format. Maybe showcasing a palumo build (the reptile x saber) used to make nat beast (I remember siding tsukyomi in my pendulum decks just to shut it down lol), and maybe even kozmo before the blue eyes set, which was already a pretty interesting deck!

Back in 2016 I had just recently gotten back into Yugioh since there was a decent sized community of players at my college. I had no idea what pendulum was and reading the cards with effects saying “destroy your own cards” baffled me as to how this could be good. Then we’d go to the card shop and guys were trying to get copies of Ogre and Wavering eyes that were at ridiculous prices and I would be so lost. Boy was I glad I stayed out of this competitive cluster as it went on and just watched from the sidelines.

The list used by MBT here is a list i used to get from 230 rating to 946 rating on Dueling Network in less that a week back when Dueling Network was a thing I remember I used to 2 Lance and 1 Chalice instead but for the most part it was one to one copy This dick got solved so fast and it was so strong it was a nightmare to play against luckily for me since everyone was tired of this deck IRL or preferred to play something else online they did not play this so it was free ranking up for me
