Platform sharpening is the best way to sharpen a 40/40 bowl gouge, and the Drozda Finial Gouge. This sharpening method is easy to learn with just a little practise. In this video, I describe the profiles of my gouges and show you how I sharpen them. I will also show how I hone the inside of the flutes for the sharpest edge.
This video replaces the one I uploaded yesterday, and shows how to use your Wolverine platform without cutting it out around the wheel.
Thanks go out to Stu Batty for showing me how to use and sharpen a 40/40 gouge. He has revolutionized my sharpening, and therefore my turning!
For more tool information and lots of stuff about woodturning, please take a moment to visit my website www.cindydrozda...
If you are wondering where to get that grinder support platform, it is made by Stuart Batty Tools and sold by Woodworkers Emporium in Las Vegas USA. The platforms are not listed on the website, give them a call to ask about them.

Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge Cindy. Your video concisely covers some of the gaps in my thinking after watching other 40/40 videos. I really appreciate your coverage of the different gouges all in the one video. Having access to the best turner's brains is amazing! Thanks again.

I have the Robo rest on one side of my grinder and a jig set up on the other side. I recently took the time to learn the 40-40 grind using the Robo rest. After just a little bit of time I was getting very acceptable results. I was proud of myself! I now use the platform exclusively for all of my sharpening. A lot quicker and easier than having to jig up to sharpen a tool

You explain this skill of sharpening clear and seemingly possible to achieve. You are a very talented artist and instructor. You have explained many details that I have not heard others even mention. I have practiced and learned to sharpen my carving gouges by hand, but using a grinder, either freehand or with a jig, is a new challenge. Thank you for providing this instructional video. I also really like your finial work and your artistic ideas.

Another excellent video. Although I have a Pencil Diamond Hone, I've yet to use it as you've shown, I may give it try and see what difference doing that makes. I usually use a jig to sharpen my Bowl Gouges, works for me, I've been considering getting a cheap gouge to practise hand sharpening.

Can you describe how you went about setting up the markings on your platform? I understand you made a template, but what are the angles on the lines drawn from the outer edge of the wheel to the front edge of the rest? Thanks in advance. Really terrific instructional video.

Thanks for the great video, Cindy! I haven't gotten frustrated with platform sharpening yet. I've got another bowl gouge besides the 40/40 that I use for the bottom of the bowl. I've ground it on the platform with angle as suggested in one of the Stuart Batty videos. Still working on improving my platform sharpening and turning. Would love a link to the pen file - didn't see it on your site. Been using a slip stone semicircle that seems to help.

The slipstone with a radius edge works well, also. Oops, I see that you are correct about not having the pen file on my website. I will fix that today!

Cindy - thank you for the updated video. I have a 8" slow speed Rikon grinder with white 1" wheels and a wolverine jig for both sides. What grit CBN should I go with? 80/180 or 80/350 or another pair? How should I set those up on my grinder based on the platform and other side? Which side should each wheel go on? I do not have the ability to to get a piece of metal and cut it for the wheel nor cut the existing wolverine platform. Grinding the 40 degree one the platform should work as long as I mark the platform 40degree on each side, correct? Or should I find a way to get the platform piece cut around the 1" sized wheel? Finally, I cannot find a place that sells the actual Stuart Batty platform system. The only thing I have found is the adapter for the wolverine jig system. Any help or guidance you can provide would be wonderful and greatly appreciated.

If I only had the money for one CBN wheel, it would be a 180 grit. That will do a good job on all of our typical turning tools. A coarse stone wheel for rough shaping is fine. I like a Norton 3X 46 grit for rough shaping. If I had 2 CBN wheels, they would be 170/200 and 325/400. You can make an overlay for your wolverine platform that has a cut out in it, like I show in the video, out of formica like I did, or out of aluminum, which is easy to cut with woodworking tools. You won't find the SBT platforms online, but if you call up Woodworkers Emporium, Christian will tell you when he will have more of them. They are not on his website.

Where do u purchase a platform rest that is cutout. Also loved the videos use of sound, this makes your videos a cut above the rest with no sound..thanks for talking

Ron, You can buy the platforms I use here at Woodworkers Emporium in Las Vegas. I know it says they are out of stock on the website. Call them. You can also make an overlay, like I show in another of my sharpening videos. Make it out of non-ferrous metal or plastic that you can cut with your bandsaw, and stick it on to the existing platform with double sided tape.

Cindy, another great video. I noticed that the angles on the platform for bowl and spindle gouges are different. If I assume the bowl gouge angle is 40 degrees, is the spindle gouge angle about 60 degrees?
@cindydrozda
@cindydrozda 4 жыл бұрын
The angle for my spindle gouges is 15 - 20 degrees of sweep. The bevel angle is the same for both.

Hey Cindy Thanks for sharing. Thanks for the time and effort. Do you sharpen your Vortex tool top side down on a diamond stone?

Yes, and I just posted a video showing how I do it. Flat side down on a diamond card that is held to the bench by a magnet.

Looking at your spindle roughing gouge, It looks to me that it is a re-purposed bottom bowl gouge(round bar as opposed to a rolled flat) Is that a Thompson?
@cindydrozda
@cindydrozda 4 жыл бұрын
It is the exact same shape as a bottom bowl gouge, and sharpened the same way, but with a 40 degree bevel instead of the 50-60 that I would put on a bottom bowl gouge. That one is an early SBT gouge made by Jerry Glaser, I believe, from 10V steel. It's milled from round bar. Identical to the Thompson bottom bowl gouge, but a lot shorter.
