Benny is from the space sets from the 1980s. They were quite popular, but as with most things, that popularity faded and the line came to an end. Therapist here - the whole "and what would he say?" role play of asking the son to 'pretend' to say what he really feels is actually SUPER effective in therapy. It provides people the psychic distance to say what they're perhaps afraid to say or admit to feeling while also letting it out. It admittedly sounds really silly, but when deployed effectively in therapy, it can really break down walls. People often end up crying while saying what some 'other' pretend figure would say in a situation. It's quite powerful and beautiful when done appropriately.

Isn't the whole point of therapy to be able to talk to someone about your feelings without being afraid to admit you feel them? Why would you ask someone to pretend to say what they really feel? Maybe this is why therapists don't like me.
@mj_SR22 Жыл бұрын
@@Dusk.EighthLegion Great question! The point of therapy broadly speaking is to become more fully and safely present to who you are, that you might then find ways to live a more fully authentic life. But even when speaking to a professional whose whole job is to be nonjudgmental and help you, that doesn't mean sharing how you feel might not be scary. We can feel scared to be present to how we feel for fear of how others may react, yes. But we can also be scared for fear of how we may react to them ourselves. We might judge ourselves, be scared to admit them, not like where a feeling brings us, or have traumatic past experiences that cause certain feelings to trigger fear responses in the body. By asking a person to "pretend" to say what they feel you are giving them a way to both access how they feel and keep a bit of psychic distance from it if they aren't fully ready or able to access those feelings yet. It's a bridge toward building more access, a technique, not the end goal. And we do this all the time in ordinary life. We rarely just frankly say how we feel (to a boss, a stranger, a crush, etc.). Instead we have small ways of saying how we feel and protecting ourselves. Totally normal. But sometimes accessing a feeling can feel so scary that we can't even admit to them -- but the feeling remains important and unable to be healed still. So this kind of technique allows for a compromise. It's a way of building some safety, not only with the therapist, but yourself. You get to 'dip your toes' in the water of the feeling before jumping in all the way. But don't take some internet rando's word for it. The next time you say you 'kinda' feel some way, are upset but claim to be 'fine,' etc., just notice that you're feeling something but perhaps not yet ready to delve into it. That's the ordinary version of this. Also, in trauma situations, the brain literally tries to stop you from feeling. It jumps on the slightest hint of it with anxiety, what if thinking, dissociation, rushes to substance use, etc. Anything to get away from the feeling. These kinds of compromise techniques allow us to access feelings before the brain completely shuts it down. And in doing so, the brain/body realize we're safe and so allow us to access a bit more feeling. And so on and so on. As for why therapists don't like you, I always tell people if you think your therapist doesn't like you that you should just ask them. Say why you think that and ask them. Who knows, might find something really helpful from it. Good therapists can and should be able to have those conversations. Either way, all the best to you!

I think the series is worth continuing. Please note, that even though Lego 2 is the direct sequel, Lego Batman also references the first movie, and it chronologically fits, as the next chapter. It's also briefly and indirectly referenced by Lego 2. I would watch Lego Batman next. Who knows, you might just decide that it's your favorite Batman movie. WB produced the Lego movies, or rather their animation division. DC wouldn't have been much of a problem to use. Star Wars might have posed some difficulty, but Fox was pretty friendly. I don't know about Benny's popularity, but they did have some space themed sets at the time, and they featured characters that looked like Benny. Benny was like the Emmet of the spaceship sets, in that he wasn't supposed to represent anyone in particular. It's amazing how the film starts out fun, then gets REALLY deep at the end. I don't think there will be anything like it soon. I suggest you enjoy the sequels (starting with Batman) while you can.

Mom overheard "Everything is Awesome" and asked/implied the song and/or movie was about conformity or a sort of shallow, childish message of teamwork. Adherence to instruction and uncontrolled creativity. Business, pleasure. Order, chaos. Adult, child. Wonderful storytelling, selling toys. It's impressive how it has its cake and eats it too! (And, many kids just hummed "EVERYTHING IS AWESOME WHEN YOU'RE PART OF THE TEAM" for weeks and didn't get the satirical side of it...)

I'm personally biased in preferring this over Barbie due to the fact this came out when I was almost 18, Toy Story was the first movie I ever watched, and I grew up playing with Bionicles and assembling my own creations. But most importantly it reminded me of the last words my late auntie said to me, I started calling her by her actual name to the fact that I was 16 and felt calling her auntie still was a bit childish, she asked "can you please call me auntie instead?" I saw that as a metaphor about not being ashamed of who you are shouldn't feel like you need to conform. So, when I saw this when it came out, it hit every emotional note inside me. So seeing you both getting emotional as well makes me glad that I wasn't just being the lone weirdo for crying in the theater. Kudos.

(Whether the makers themselves would describe their joint effort thusly, I'm not inclined to place any bets.) The "Retro Spaceship" guy/sets were massively popular back in the day, but it's had a bunch of updates. I recall when I was a kid (the 80s/90s) they started making M-Tron (which were black, red, and neon green, and started incorporating little magnets into their designs), Blacktron (black and yellow), and Space Police (blue white and red) to add more of a narrative or something I guess. Anyways, the long and short of it is that the new sets very quickly eclipsed the old ones, and the (superior, now that I look back at it as an adult) retro space Lego quickly became extremely out-of-fashion. So yeah, to answer your question, retro space Lego was beloved for a time, but Lego themselves ditched it for cops-and-robbers-and-magnets.

The amount of detail that went into this movie was phenomenal. They had the original piece models from Lego, but they also 3D scanned a bunch of actual pieces, both brand new and used, so they could see how they differed from the original models and how they wore and scuffed over time. Then they sat down and wrote shaders to randomly add those effects to the models that were computer generated, so you get random fingerprints, scratches, scuffs and all kinds of marks on every piece.

What I love about this movie is it explores a real deep divide between LEGO Enthusiasts: the people who just like to follow the instructions and build what's on the box, put it on a shelf and display it, and people who like to mix and match, create their own stuff, and create adventures. And the movie ends with Emmet and Lord Business, who represent each side of this coin, embracing and recognizing both of these ways of enjoying LEGO are valid, and one shouldn't look down on or stifle the other.

To answer your question the entire film (minus the live-action section and the credits, which was made using real legos) was made with CGI, all of it, the animators were asked to follow the logics of stop-motion as closely as possible to add to the realism. This movie is probably the best CGI movie of all time in my opinion, the attention to detail is insane, the animators went so far as to have the legos have imperfections like scratches and stains and that makes it look so real and I really think that makes the whole message of it feel even more impactful because you end up believing the whole thing goes beyond a child's imagination, or at least that's how I feel.

One of my favorite movies. I have quite the nostalgia for it as I saw it come out during my high school days & saw the tie-in toy line with creative & clever builds new in stores. The film crew basically took the lemon of an idea of a LEGO commercial stretched out to film length & made quite the tasty lemonade with it. The animation is apparently mostly CGI, but deliberately animated to mimic stop motion LEGO videos. Along with adding quite the details like the scratches and fingerprints to the models. The Classic Space Guy, Benny, is based on a old LEGO line from the 70s. It has quite the nostalgia driven cult following lately. Even got a new anniversary set recently. I recommend checking out The LEGO Batman Movie. It’s somehow widely considered one of the best Batman movies out there. And it’s as fun as this one. Oh you better believe I was also highly skeptical about this film after my friend implored me to watch it. I had the same exact "oh this is gonna be a by the numbers IP commercial thing" vibes. I was so deeply happy to be wrong. This movie rules.

Please, Please do all the Lego movies, they're all great! Also it's not actual stop motion, they made a completely new computer rendering engine for this movie to make the animation look like stop motion. It's also used in the other Lego movies.

Good to know.

@@BarryHart-xo1oyAlso many of the specials are simply CGI without the _stop-motion tweak._ For instance, if you watch any of the LEGO Star Wars specials, those are straight up CGI with the smooth motion that CGI generally entails. It is one way to compare the styles.

It was really fun watching you being kind of skeptic about it at the start, because I was pretty sure you were going to enjoy it. I'm glad you really did

Fantastic film, knew you’d enjoy it 🙂 To answer George’s question about what’s the point after it’s done, it’s to display if you want to. I have the Lego Titanic (over 9000 pieces!) and the Lego Old Trafford (a football stadium in England) and there’s a company that sells display cases for them with backgrounds and a plaque with info such as piece count etc. I didn’t use superglue, though 😂
@hellomark1 Жыл бұрын
Yeah we have the Apollo Saturn V rocket which is so detailed it doesn't even look like lego. Not glued either and it sits on top of a 7 foot bookshelf, if we ever had a strong earthquake it would be a pretty bad RUD

“Barbie took some inspiration from this” was exactly what I was thinking when I was forced to see the Barbie movie. Only difference is that the Lego movie has subtlety and creativity in its message. Which is crazy to type out

The Lego Batman is literally the greatest interpretation of the character. The movie spin-off is my favorite of all the other batman movies and you should definitely watch it if you liked this.

The Retro Space Man came from the Space series of sets in the 1970s. They were the first sets with modern mini figures, and parts that were not just square cornered bricks. It was incredibly popular, but every Space Man's helmet broke, just like the one in the movie😊

SPACESHIIIIP! I was waiting to find the time to watch this reaction properly. I wasn't convinced before I watched it, but the attention to detail like the Kra gl e and vitruvius staff and little things like space Benny's helmet split that was almost guaranteed with them during the 80s when I played with legs. Great reaction guys 👍

I worked at legoland here in san diego/ carlsbad. I got to work with the chatacter actors and ran around the life size sets of emmets appartment. We also had sets from the movie and yes they used real legos to make the movie (with some cg).. i loved all the lego happy time and would dance around to everything is awesome all the time.. i love these movies i say u should watch them all!

Oh, retro 80s spaceship was *very* popular (it wasn't "retro" at the time :D), I had them - blue spaceships, I had a small one, a medium sized one - oh yes; later came the red-and-black "tron" set, with green translucent windows, got a few of those too, but they kept changing. They prolly refer to "80s retro spaceship" cus it's the oldest space-set. And YES! I visited a home like that, they had a whole LEGO-city room, someone's dad; everything glued down, I was barely allowed to behooold, before we had to close the door, crazy stuff - also back in 80s/90s

The retro astronaut was pretty ubiquitous back when pre-designed lego sets were still sort of a new thing. There are way more options these days so naturally there is a lot more variety in what people would have. I was a kid in the 80s and I had one for sure. The helmet was cracked in the same place too, so that must have been a common problem.

I had couple bigger old spaceship lego sets.. you build everything once with intructions.. then always freebuilds 🤩 (blue and grey.. then came grey and black... etc)

Ah yes, The renowned North American House Hippo. Found throughout Canada and the Eastern United States. They have been known to be ticklish, but they are rarely seen. Making nests in bedroom closets using lost mittens, dryer lint and bits of string. They regularly sleep about 16 hours a day. So glad you reacted to this movie. As some of my favorite reactors period, I'm happy when I see you react to one of my favorites. As with most others here, its an amazing movie that all exceeded our expectations when we first watched and now hold the movie in high regards. One of those movies that can go beyond entertainment and because a just little piece of you. Through visuals, musically, story relation or just endless quotes with friends. Would love to see you react to "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" (2005) someday. Its easily one of my Top 10s. Thanks for all the entertainment.

The original Lego Space sets were to building blocks, what Mario was for video games at around the same time in history. Anyone from the eighties was wondering why space is wasn't referenced until Benny made his appearance. It was an awesome time to build a spaceship.

Space Legos were HUGELY popular in the 80s. There were basically town, castle, western, and space type Lego sets. They only went to the wayside when Lego started getting all of the licensed properties they have today (Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel & DC, etc...) So, the joke about Benny and his spaceship fixation is that it's all just old-fashioned.
@OzeroCa Жыл бұрын
I had a ton of that space Lego. It was THE THING. I don’t even know how many blue space guys I had. Enough to staff a ship like that, 3 others, and my base. Easily a dozen guys. Plus my 2 red guys and a white guy. Blue was big.

I got my first Legos for Christmas in 1978. It was just the basic blocks. A little bit later, I got an actual set. It was a space set with a "NASA" guy. All the Legos were grey, but the space guy was from a set back in the 70s after we had been to the moon, so there was the idea that we would be exploring more of space.
