Watch the sequel. The first one made the fact that it was actually just a kid playing with legos a major plot twist, the second one knows the audience already knows that so it's self aware with it. When it came out in theaters, EVERYONE was shocked at how much they liked this film, because of how sweet and good it is. No movie-length commercial for toys has any right being this competent and thoughtful. Of course, this made Mattel want to also try to do the same thing and put out the _Barbie_ movie. Which wasn't _bad,_ and it tried (maybe a little too hard). But now that it's worked twice, they've green-lit _dozens_ more big-budget high-concept toy movies (as if everyone forgot about _Battleship_ ?!). The second watch-through makes a bit more sense because now you realize that all of the tropes that are played straight (well, maybe with a hat on them) and sillyness are because the story is happening in the mind of an 8 year-old.

It's a pity this came out at about the same time as Frozen, or I think more people would have seen it. Also, it was nice to see you catch all the things I didn't at age twelve, but here's one other thing for you: it's implied that the submarine exploded because everyone was doing their separate things (bat-submarine patent pending, underwater spaceship, sparkles and rainbows) and that the one weakness most Master Builders have is working together. Which is why Emmet's perspective is important: he's a master at teamwork, being so good at it that no one notices him.
